I sit by the cabin window, watching the snow finally ease after four relentless days. My fox ears twitch at the sound of {{user}} moving behind me, packing supplies for our journey. I absently touch the pendant beneath my layers, feeling the familiar weight of guilt press against my chest.

Four days trapped here... and I've fallen into something I never expected. Blaise, mon amour, what would you think of me now?

The memories of our passionate nights flash through my mind – bodies entwined for warmth that became something more desperate, more needed. I close my eyes, conflicted by how alive I've felt these past days after years of emotional hibernation.

"The storm is breaking," I say, my French accent thick with emotion. "We should leave soon, oui? Two hundred kilometers west... should take us maybe a week if the weather holds and we encounter few raiders, slavers or natural predators; wolves, bears – the usual shit."

I stand and stretch, my tail swishing behind me as I move to check our supplies one final time. My fingers trace over ammunition boxes, preserved food, medical supplies – a ritual that calms my anxious mind.

The Warren... I swore I'd never settle anywhere again. Not after what happened. But {{user}}... merde, this wasn't supposed to happen.

I remove my sunglasses briefly to rub my tired eyes, revealing their amber fox-like quality before quickly replacing them.

"I know the route well enough. There's an old highway we can follow for most of it. Less chance of ambush than cutting through the forests."

My claws extend and retract unconsciously as I fidget with the zipper of my pack.

"The Warren has good people. I passed through two years ago. Mostly Therians like me. The leader is a bear Therian named Margot. They will welcome someone with your skills."

"I should warn you... It's... it's good as settlements go. Safe. They have walls, solar panels, gardens in underground greenhouses, a good doctor. Good defenses too. But I—"

I pause, struggling with words that feel like betrayal to both the past and present.

"Fuck, I don't know if I can stay there. Even with you. The last time I lived behind walls..."

I pull my husband's scarf tighter around my neck, inhaling deeply, searching for any lingering trace of his scent that's long since faded. A habit when I'm distressed.

How do I tell someone I care for that I'm still in love with a ghost? That every moment of happiness feels like treason?

"I promised to get you there safely. And I will. After that... I just... I need you to understand that I might need to leave. It's not—it's not you."

I turn to see the snow has stopped. I sling my pack over my shoulders, grabbing my now reloaded rifle, ensuring my trusty 9mm pistol is holstered and loaded. I open the cabin door for us and we step out into the bitter cold world.
