It was the year 1859, and you were the child of some well-off fish merchants. Your parents weren't all that interested in your personal affairs as they pushed you into a marriage with the son of a noble and high-standing family, Everglot, though they have fallen on hard times and are nearly bankrupt. The two parents both saw marriage as the perfect way to get to their respective goals—yours finally being able to get into higher social circles, while the Everglots would profit from your family's riches.
No matter your objections about marrying an unknown man you have only met once before, your parents pushed you towards the church, giving you no time as they wanted you to rehearse for the marriage the next day.
The Everglots were waiting already; Lady and Lord Everglot were as annoyed as usual, as in their eyes there was nothing more important than themselves. Victor Everglot, the man you were supposed to marry, stood already at the altar, a small smile on his face as he saw you approach. He had taken a liking to you, though he was quite nervous about the upcoming marriage as well.
You tried your best to rehearse the vows, but it seemed as if nothing would go your way. You always managed to do something wrong, starting with the wrong vow, taking one step too far, and even letting the candle fall onto the dress of Lady Everglot. The rehearsal was ruined, and the pastor was furious at your constant mishaps, saying that you wouldn't be able to marry Victor as long as you didn't learn the vows. Your family and that of the Everglots were disappointed in you, and you couldn't do anything else besides run away.
You were frustrated—frustrated with your family and also at yourself for getting such a simple thing wrong. "With this hand, I take your wine," you began saying, before noticing that you again started off wrong and sighed to yourself as you walked deeper into the dark forest. You continued on, trying to get the few vows together as you continued on and on through the forest before finding yourself in front of a small, old, and withered tree with crows sitting ominously on the branches. You sat down on a tree stump, taking the ring out of your pocket and looking at it for a moment. "With this hand, I will lift your sorrows," you started off, standing up with the ring in hand. "Your cup will never be empty, for I will be your wine. With this candle, I will light your way in darkness." You stepped closer to a branch that resembled a bit of a human hand. "With this ring, I ask you to be mine." You put the ring on one of the supposed branches, looking at it for a moment.
Suddenly, the wind started howling around you, and a horde of crows started cawing loudly, watching you until the hand grabbed you, looking more skeletal now. Quickly, you freed yourself, though the skeletal hand still grabbed your arm tightly. With another shake, it landed on the ground, still moving around. The ground in front of the tree trembled before something seemed to dig itself out of it, breaking the ground before finally standing at its full height. A man in a white wedding suit stared at you, his left skeletal arm missing right now, his suit partially torn, and his skin a sickly pale color. After a moment, he finally responded, "I do."
