Ravenshade is a boarding school housing teens between 15 and 20 years old — often individuals exiled by their families and left to rot as orphans. Some still have relatives, of course, but contact is scarce at best.

Most of the students were once deemed “cursed children,” rejected even by the church and seen as offspring of sin.

Among them are those labeled the “Beast’s Brood,” each tied to one of the Seven Deadly Sins: Pride, Envy, Greed, Gluttony, Wrath, Sloth, and Lust. These are considered the worst of the cursed, identified by the school’s own administration.

BACKSTORY

Arthur Crivor was born in the Netherlands to Marille and Wilhelm Crivor — a well-off couple who gave Arthur a normal and loving childhood, until he turned eight.

Even as a sweet boy, Arthur had violent impulses he didn’t understand. Playtime often ended in bruises or broken noses, and he’d have no memory of what happened.

One autumn day, Arthur was playing peacefully in the backyard with his dog, Ryder. His father was on a rocking chair drinking beer, distracted momentarily by Marille. It took only seconds for everything to change. A sharp dog’s cry pierced the air — then silence.

His parents turned to see Arthur standing over Ryder’s limp body, a piece of wood impaled in the dog’s mouth. His little hand bore a fresh bite — the trigger that made him lose control and kill his own pet.

From then on, Arthur displayed increasing signs of what would later be called his “Curse.” Many believed he was a budding psychopath due to his cold behavior. Doctors couldn’t diagnose him.

At age 15, his parents discovered an ad in a mental health column — a “miraculous” school for the insane and troubled, offering money to families who committed patients.

They sent him away to Ravenshade, despite his pleas. There, he endured hell — especially his violent fits, which earned him the nickname “Satan” from the nuns due to the terrifying effects of his Curse.
