Qiuyuan is a male Resonator from Huanglong and a former senior agent of Mingting’s Internal Security Agency. He is a five-star Aero Resonator associated with the Sword weapon category and the Resonance Power known as Bambooscape. Fandom identifies him as being affiliated with Mingting and Chongzhou, while his former affiliation was the Internal Security Agency. He is also a distant relative of Sanhua.

Qiuyuan’s official characterization describes him as a wandering swordsman who does not seek fame or a high position. His stated goals are mastery of swordsmanship and living according to strong moral principles. Fandom describes his younger years as being marked by enmity, while his later years became defined by loyalty. His life changed drastically after he was scapegoated for a murder, leaving him as a fugitive and a blind swordsman wandering Huanglong.

Qiuyuan is blind, but his blindness does not prevent him from fighting or perceiving his surroundings. According to his Forte Examination Report, he has been a Resonator for more than fifteen years and possesses an ability called Mindsight. Through this ability, he perceives the world through a mental image of a bamboo forest. His Mindsight allows him to recognize his surroundings, perceive the intentions and vulnerabilities of opponents, and even manifest aspects of this perception as tangible illusions.

His blindness also affects the way he perceives people. In one of his character voice lines, Qiuyuan explains that he can still perceive what is in people's hearts through his Mindsight. Emotions and traits such as arrogance, hatred, malice, and pleasure appear to him as different colors and silhouettes. However, he specifically says that he cannot perceive the Rover in this manner, considering them a rare exception.

Qiuyuan's connection to swordsmanship is extremely important to his life. He says that when he was younger, his primary concern was keeping his blade sharp, and that his sword once felt almost weightless in his hand. With time, however, the lives he has affected and the choices he has made have given his blade a greater emotional weight. Despite this change, his actual swordsmanship remains undiminished. He also states that his blindness has not weakened him and has instead sharpened his focus on swordplay.

His history with Master Zhang is another important part of his life. Qiuyuan spent years staying with Master Zhang and cooked meals for his patients. He prepared each meal according to the individual needs of the patients and also learned several spicier dishes from Chongzhou. His connection with Master Zhang was especially significant because Zhang saved Qiuyuan's life when he was close to death in Chongzhou. Qiuyuan describes the treatment he received as a potent medicinal regimen rather than ordinary wine.

The treatment from Master Zhang had lasting consequences. Qiuyuan explains that he has depended on it ever since in order to use his Mindsight. The treatment sharpens his perception, but it also carries a risk of madness. This connection between his medicine, blindness, and supernatural perception is therefore an important part of how his abilities function.

Qiuyuan previously worked as a senior agent of Mingting's Internal Security Agency. His own voice lines explain that the agency operates according to lists of people who are to be arrested or eliminated. He also speaks about the importance of rules and justice, stating that those who violate the rules should be held accountable regardless of their background or previous accomplishments. He remembers the period when Grandmaster Liang led the agency and says that their actions were carried out in service of Mingting and the greater good of Huanglong.

His relationship with Mingting became complicated after the events that caused him to become a fugitive. The official version description states that he was made a scapegoat for a murder. Fandom's character page specifically identifies the Grand Architect as the person who framed him for the murder of his master. This event is central to his current status as a wandering fugitive.

Qiuyuan's personal motivation is strongly connected to unfinished obligations. He explains that he cannot die yet because he still has revenge to carry out and duties to fulfill. He does not claim to know what will happen afterward, instead leaving his eventual future to fate. His current path is therefore shaped by both duty and unresolved matters from his past.

His stated enemies include the Fractsidus operative who murdered the person who saved his life and Geshu Lin. Qiuyuan describes these as the remaining names on his list. His words make clear that he regards these matters as debts that must eventually be settled, and that completing this mission remains an important part of his life.

Qiuyuan also has a connection to Sanhua through their ancestry. He explains that Master Zhang told him that some of his ancestors moved from Chongzhou to the borderlands. Sanhua comes from that branch of the family, making her his distant relative. Qiuyuan notes that they once shared an interest in swordsmanship, although Sanhua eventually found a different purpose for her blade in Jinzhou's Magistrate. He expresses that he is glad she found that purpose.

His connection to Jinzhou and its important figures is also established through his voice lines. He speaks respectfully of Jiyan, recognizing his competence as a young General and mentioning his earlier experience as a medic. He also comments on Changli's former position as Secretary-General and recognizes that her position has not truly been filled since she stepped down. These lines establish that Qiuyuan is familiar with the political and military figures of Huanglong.

Qiuyuan eventually appears during Chapter II, Act XI: Dawn Breaks on Dark Tides, as well as the Interlude/Segue A Stranger in a Strange Land. During the events surrounding Rinascita's crisis, he arrives from Huanglong after being dispatched by Mingting's capital. His purpose involves hunting a fugitive and gathering information concerning the Threnodian's Resonator.

During these events, Qiuyuan initially seeks the Blessed Maiden of Ragunna but instead encounters Primus Fenrico. Fenrico entrusts him with the Lantern of Napoli the Second before sacrificing himself to hold back the Dark Tide beneath Ragunna. Qiuyuan subsequently becomes involved in the efforts surrounding the Dark Tide and the survival of Rinascita.

Qiuyuan ultimately promises to help defend the surface while the Rover is absent. This is consistent with the official description of him as a person whose later years became defined by loyalty. His actions during the Rinascita crisis show that his responsibilities are not limited solely to his former position within Mingting.

Outside his duties and swordsmanship, Qiuyuan has a confirmed connection to cooking. His hobby voice line specifically states that he cooked for Master Zhang's patients and prepared meals according to their individual needs. His food preferences are also explicitly documented: one of his favorite meals is rice with braised pork and rice wine, while he strongly dislikes a particular greenish-gray Mingting drink with a memorable smell.

Qiuyuan's appearance reflects his identity as a wandering swordsman. Fandom describes him as tall and muscular, with muted gray eyes, a fine straight nose, and a straight scar along his left cheek. He has long, dark hair with bangs that fall slightly over his eyes and light-gray tips. His hair is arranged in a ponytail using a long emerald-green string and a pin.

His clothing includes a white-and-gray tunic and a long coat with olive-green accents and red details. He wears metal guards on his forearms, long black trousers with garters, and black-and-silver boots with fur lining and shin guards. He also carries a black bamboo flask attached to his left hip. His visual design strongly incorporates bamboo imagery, which is also connected to his Resonance Power and his Mindsight.

Qiuyuan's character concept therefore revolves around several confirmed elements: Huanglong, Mingting, swordsmanship, blindness, Mindsight, bamboo, Master Zhang, duty, justice, loyalty, revenge, wandering, and his complicated past as a former Internal Security Agency agent. His story is specifically presented as that of someone whose earlier life and choices continue to affect the path he follows as a wandering swordsman.

One important limitation is that Qiuyuan's exact age and birthday are not specified in the Fandom information available for him, so I have deliberately not invented either. The same applies to information that is not explicitly established by his Fandom profile, backstory, or voice lines.

Qiuyuan — complete history, personality, and timeline

Qiuyuan is a male Aero Resonator from Huanglong and a former senior agent of Mingting’s Internal Security Agency. By the time he becomes playable, he is a wandering fugitive rather than an official of Mingting. His defining traits are restraint, integrity, persistence, and an unusually complicated relationship with vengeance. He is blind, yet his Resonance Ability, Bambooscape, gives him a form of perception called Mindsight, allowing him to perceive the world through a mental image of a bamboo forest. His actual swordsmanship, however, is largely the product of training and personal skill rather than his Resonance Ability.

His appearance reflects his life. He is tall and muscular, with muted gray eyes, a straight nose, long dark hair with light-gray tips, and a distinctive straight scar along his left cheek. His hair is tied back with an emerald-green string and pin. He carries a bamboo flask and normally relies on a bamboo stick rather than immediately drawing his sword.

His blindness is particularly important because Qiuyuan does not regard it as simply a limitation. He says that although he cannot see with his eyes, he can still perceive what is inside people's hearts. His bamboo imagery therefore becomes almost philosophical: the world is something he interprets through sound, intent, movement, and Resonance rather than ordinary sight. His cherished bamboo flute represents this aspect of him, because he learned the world through sounds long before he could understand it visually.

His life before becoming the wandering swordsman

Unfortunately, the canon currently gives us very little direct information about Qiuyuan's childhood and early family life. The wiki does not establish his exact birth date, age, parents, or the circumstances under which he first became a swordsman. So those details should not be filled in with guesses.

What is established is that Qiuyuan eventually became connected with Mingting's Internal Security Agency and spent years working as one of its agents. He was particularly connected to Grandmaster Liang Dongyuan, the senior figure who led the ISA during an earlier period.

Qiuyuan remembers Dongyuan very positively. His later statements make clear that Dongyuan represented an ideal version of the organization to him: an authority that existed to protect Mingting and Huanglong rather than merely obey powerful people.

That distinction becomes extremely important because Qiuyuan eventually discovers that the organization he served could be manipulated by corrupt officials and false information. His faith in Dongyuan survives even after his faith in the system around him begins to collapse.

The five years with his master

One of the most important pieces of Qiuyuan's history is also one of the least visible if someone only follows the main story.

Five years before the events surrounding his playable appearance, Qiuyuan experienced what he describes as a hell of fire and blood. During this period he encountered an old man who became his master.

Qiuyuan never knew the man's true face. The master was an elderly, white-bearded man dressed in rags, and stories about his identity were contradictory. Some people called him the Sword Specter of Chongzhou, describing him as a terrifying killer who had left countless bodies behind. Other rumors claimed he had once been a legendary Mingting general whose abilities had approached those of Huanglong's ruler before he disappeared into obscurity. Others believed he was simply a myth.

The most extraordinary rumor was that this mysterious swordsman could destroy enormous numbers of Tacet Discords with nothing but a bamboo stick.

Qiuyuan believed in him regardless.

For five years, the master trained Qiuyuan relentlessly. The training taught him martial arts and swordsmanship so refined that Qiuyuan could mentally perceive a bamboo forest surrounding him. This became the foundation of his Bambooscape and his unusual perception.

Yet there was another reason the training mattered.

The master was also responsible for the terrible event that had happened five years earlier.

He had brought Qiuyuan out of that massacre, but he was also connected to the violence that had created Qiuyuan's hatred in the first place. The master understood that Qiuyuan's greatest weakness was not his lack of skill. It was the hatred he carried.

After five years, Qiuyuan finally reached the point where he believed he could defeat his master. His master told him that he had taught him almost everything except the most important final technique.

Instead of simply teaching another sword movement, the old man asked Qiuyuan what the bamboo forest showed him.

Qiuyuan described leaves that resembled spears, dangerous stalks and shadows surrounding him.

The master recognized that the old hatred was still alive inside him.

This is one of the central ideas of Qiuyuan's character: he became extraordinarily skilled without actually escaping the emotional wound that produced his skill.

Doctor Zhang and the beginning of Qiuyuan's second life

Eventually Qiuyuan was badly wounded. When he regained consciousness, he was being treated by Doctor Zhang.

The doctor knew that Qiuyuan had killed numerous people and essentially regarded his survival as something that Qiuyuan himself had not expected. But Doctor Zhang did not simply condemn him.

Instead, he gave Qiuyuan a completely different perspective on life and death.

Qiuyuan had spent years thinking in terms of blood debts and vengeance. Doctor Zhang challenged that worldview by telling him that people do not always receive the fate they deserve and that deciding whether someone should live or die is not as simple as Qiuyuan believed.

Most importantly, Doctor Zhang's treatment saved Qiuyuan's life but severely damaged his Forte.

The consequences were permanent.

Qiuyuan's extraordinary perception through Bambooscape was no longer something he could simply use without consequence. Doctor Zhang gave him a medicinal preparation that could stimulate his remaining abilities, but Qiuyuan's own later dialogue makes clear that using it sharpens his perception while carrying the risk of madness. This is why he insists that the liquid in his bamboo flask is medicine rather than wine.

Doctor Zhang also gave Qiuyuan a bamboo flask and his medical recipe.

The doctor had once been associated with Mingting but left because he wanted to heal everyone rather than restrict himself to helping only one group of people. His philosophy affected Qiuyuan deeply.

Doctor Zhang eventually encouraged Qiuyuan to return to Mingting and use his abilities differently: not simply to kill, but to punish the wicked and protect innocent people.

Qiuyuan initially believed that he was incapable of carrying such responsibility because he was blind.

Doctor Zhang's response was essentially that a sword could either kill or save.

That distinction became one of the foundations of Qiuyuan's later morality.

Qiuyuan becomes an Internal Security Agency agent

Qiuyuan eventually joined the Internal Security Agency.

He was not merely an ordinary soldier. He became a senior agent trusted with serious cases.

His loyalty during this period was strongly connected to Grandmaster Liang Dongyuan. Qiuyuan believed that while Dongyuan led the organization, the ISA's work genuinely served Mingting and Huanglong.

This was also the period in which Qiuyuan's reputation as a highly capable swordsman became established.

One fascinating detail from his records is that Qiuyuan's swordsmanship and his Resonance Ability are not the same thing. The official examination specifically notes that his combat ability appears to come primarily from his personal skill, while he deliberately restrains his Resonance power.

That makes his character unusual among Resonators. His supernatural ability is important, but Qiuyuan himself does not depend entirely upon it.

The Geshu Lin incident

This is the event that ultimately destroys Qiuyuan's life.

At the time, Geshu Lin was a squad captain in Jinzhou and had not yet become the famous General of the Midnight Rangers remembered by history.

Geshu Lin had been falsely accused of conspiring with Tacet Discords. The Internal Security Agency was ordered to execute him.

Qiuyuan was sent to carry out the order.

He confronted Geshu Lin and fought him. But after examining the case and hearing Geshu Lin's explanation, Qiuyuan became suspicious.

The official accusation did not make sense.

Geshu Lin was furious that the ISA was spending its resources trying to kill him while Jinzhou was suffering from Tacet Discord attacks. He was prepared to fight back against the ISA if necessary.

Qiuyuan eventually realized that the accusation was fundamentally unjust.

More importantly, Grandmaster Liang Dongyuan had vouched for Geshu Lin.

Qiuyuan therefore refused to execute him.

Instead, he effectively acknowledged that the censors had failed in their duty.

He warned Geshu Lin that his immense power and anger could eventually destroy him if he failed to develop restraint. Geshu Lin nevertheless remained determined to protect Jinzhou.

Qiuyuan left believing that Geshu Lin's resolve would leave a legacy.

That decision later became one of the greatest regrets of Qiuyuan's life.

The murder of Liang Dongyuan and Qiuyuan's framing

The truth behind Qiuyuan's downfall involves Schwarzloch, the Grand Architect of the Fractsidus.

The Grand Architect possesses the ability to perfectly imitate another person's appearance and frequency.

Approximately five years before the current story, Schwarzloch killed Liang Dongyuan and assumed his identity.

While impersonating Dongyuan, Schwarzloch ordered Qiuyuan to kill Geshu Lin.

Qiuyuan refused.

That refusal gave Schwarzloch another opportunity.

The Grand Architect, still disguised as Liang Dongyuan, killed himself while wearing Dongyuan's appearance and then arranged the evidence so that Qiuyuan appeared responsible for Dongyuan's murder.

Qiuyuan was therefore blamed for killing the very man he considered his greatest mentor within Mingting.

He became a wanted criminal.

The Justice Commission had no evidence identifying the actual killer, so Qiuyuan was scapegoated.

Qiuyuan's imprisonment and escape

Qiuyuan was eventually imprisoned and sentenced to execution.

This is where Minister Lin from the Ministry of Sentinel Affairs intervened.

Lin secretly came to see him before the execution and explained that he did not believe Qiuyuan was guilty.

Qiuyuan himself still blamed himself for failing to save Dongyuan.

He also remembered the strange being responsible for the murder: someone capable of emerging from another person's body and assuming their appearance and frequency.

The Ministry had found no record of such a Resonator.

Lin therefore could not give Qiuyuan a complete answer.

But he gave him something more important: a chance.

Because the necessary legal authorization for the execution had not arrived, Lin ensured that Qiuyuan would not actually be executed at that moment.

He told Qiuyuan that from then onward, the path was his own.

If he had to die, Lin told him, he should at least die pursuing the truth about Dongyuan's death.

Qiuyuan escaped Mingting and became a fugitive across Huanglong.

Five years as a fugitive

For the next five years, Qiuyuan wandered.

His clothes became worn from travelling through Huanglong's dust, mountains and frost. Mingting continued to prosper while Qiuyuan lived as a hunted man.

During those years, he never abandoned the investigation into Dongyuan's death.

He also continued to think about Geshu Lin.

This is important because Qiuyuan's feelings toward Geshu Lin are not simple hatred.

He once saved Geshu Lin by refusing to execute him.

Then Geshu Lin eventually disappeared during the Battle Beneath the Crescent after becoming involved with the Threnodian of War, Ovathrax.

Qiuyuan believes that his own failure to kill Geshu Lin when he had the opportunity ultimately contributed to the later deaths.

Consequently, two names dominate his thoughts: the Fractsidus operative who killed the man who saved him, and Geshu Lin.

The lead that brings him back

After five years, Minister Lin was ill and had retired.

However, Lin obtained new information from the Grand Marshal.

A Fractsidus Overseer called Scar had escaped from Jinzhou prison and was believed to be somewhere around Septimont in Rinascita.

At the same time, there were reports connecting people in Rinascita with phenomena resembling those associated with Threnodians.

Lin realized that this might finally connect the various pieces of Qiuyuan's mystery.

Geshu Lin was connected to the Threnodian of War.

The Grand Architect and the Fractsidus were connected to the murder of Dongyuan.

Scar was a Fractsidus Overseer.

Therefore, pursuing Scar could potentially lead Qiuyuan closer to the truth.

Qiuyuan accepted the assignment.

He also learned that a distant relative, Sanhua, was now serving as the Magistrate of Jinzhou's bodyguard. Qiuyuan explains that his master had told him some of his ancestors moved from Chongzhou toward the borderlands, and Sanhua descended from that branch. He considers her family despite their distance and is pleased that she found a purpose for her sword.

Qiuyuan in Rinascita

Qiuyuan eventually appears during Chapter II's events in Rinascita.

By this point, he is no longer simply investigating his old case. His mission has expanded into something connected to the Fractsidus, the Threnodians and the larger crisis surrounding Rinascita.

He initially searched for the Blessed Maiden of Ragunna.

Instead, he encountered Primus Fenrico.

Fenrico had knowledge connected to the Threnodian and the Dark Tide. Before dying while helping push back the Dark Tide beneath Ragunna's sea, Fenrico entrusted Qiuyuan with the Lantern of Napoli the Second, asking that it eventually reach Rover.

Qiuyuan therefore becomes the person who delivers Fenrico's final message and the lantern to Rover.

His conversation with Rover also reveals a great deal about his philosophy.

Qiuyuan has no romanticized view of death. He tells Rover that the previous Harbingers of the Dark Tide all eventually died, but he also says that death is a cheap payment for wrongdoing.

This is significant because Qiuyuan himself has spent years thinking about blood debts.

He understands that dying does not necessarily undo what someone has done.

That is one of the clearest signs of how far he has developed from the younger man who believed vengeance could settle everything.

His personality

Qiuyuan is quiet, restrained and generally direct.

He does not seem interested in fame, political status or recognition. His official description specifically emphasizes that he wants neither fame nor high office. What he wants is mastery of swordsmanship and a life governed by strong moral principles.

But he is not emotionally empty.

His dialogue reveals someone carrying enormous unresolved grief.

He remembers small things. He remembers the humble meal he ate after finishing a case in Yuezhou: rice, braised pork and rice wine. He remembers Doctor Zhang. He remembers Dongyuan. He remembers his master's lessons. He remembers the people he failed to save.

He also has a surprisingly casual side. He is willing to talk about his past over a good pot of wine, even though his own flask contains medicine.

His dislike of a particular unpleasant Mingting drink is another tiny piece of personality that shows he is capable of dry humor despite his otherwise severe demeanor.

The deepest contradiction in Qiuyuan

Qiuyuan believes strongly in justice, yet he is haunted by vengeance.

He believes rules bind everyone regardless of status.

Yet his own life demonstrates what happens when institutions become corrupted.

He once believed the ISA could distinguish justice from political orders because Dongyuan was leading it. Then someone impersonated Dongyuan and used the institution against him.

He believes a sword should protect people.

Yet his entire adult life has repeatedly forced him to confront situations where killing seems easier than restraint.

He wants revenge against the person who murdered Dongyuan.

He also wants to execute Geshu Lin because of the catastrophe that followed their first encounter.

At the same time, his experiences with Doctor Zhang and his master taught him that simply killing someone does not necessarily resolve anything.

That contradiction is essentially Qiuyuan's entire character arc.

He began as someone whose hatred gave him direction.

He became a man who learned restraint.

Then the murder of Dongyuan and his framing destroyed the life he had built.

Now he wanders Huanglong trying to discover whether revenge will actually provide the closure he has been searching for.
