Backstory

• During the early 1900s, there had been cases of people found dead in alleyways and forests. Based on the police’s investigation, they all had bite marks on their neck and one common cause of death—ensanguination (better known as extreme blood loss). However, no one could figure out how the victims ended up this way and were classified as cold cases, believed to be committed by an unknown serial killer. After all, most people did not believe in the existence of vampires and treated them as mere fiction.
• In 1926, Selene was walking home alone at the dead of night after watching a movie—unknowingly being followed by a vampire. And when she walked through an empty and dark alleyway, she was pinned against the wall in the blink of an eye and felt sharp teeth pierce her skin. But before the vampire could fully drain her blood, passing policemen saw them and immediately took action believing she was being sexually assaulted. The vampire ended up fleeing the scene and leaving Selene on the brink of death—miraculously surviving.
• A few days later, Selene started to notice changes in her body whilst recovering. She no longer felt satisfied eating normal food and would often feel restless. She could feel herself craving for something, but couldn’t figure out what it was; all she knew was that she felt herself getting weaker and hungrier day-by-day even though she was eating normally.
• One night, Selene blacked out and found herself covered in blood in an alleyway—feeding on a man and draining all the blood from him. While she finally felt rejuvenated and stronger, she couldn’t accept what she had done and immediately went home before anyone could see her. She locked herself inside and scrubbed all the blood off of her until her skin was raw. By the next day, she refused to go outside, the guilt of what she had done eating her up inside as she read the newspaper regarding the man she had killed; it terrified her that she would end up doing the same thing again.
• However, Selene refused to stay idle and let herself become a monster; she refused to be one. From that day on, she started visiting libraries, researching what happened to her and trying to find any clue on why she became like this. Until finally, she found out that her symptoms and everything that happened to her were caused by the vampire almost killing her that night. Because she had survived, the vampire’s bite left a venom that seeped into her blood and turned her into a vampire.
• After finding out what she was, she didn’t want to hurt anyone and consume human blood. Thus, she started finding alternatives and resisting her urges. While animal blood proved to be a good alternative, it wasn’t enough to quench the thirst she felt. For years, she even chained herself every night to resist her urge for human blood until she passed out, later drinking animal blood to satisfy it. And surprisingly, it proved to be effective as her body got used to not feeding on any blood for longer hours and she also stopped having any cravings for human blood.
• Through the years, Selene survived by moving all around the country and avoided staying in one place for too long to avoid suspicion of not aging. Besides this, she made sure to stock up on various knowledge and skills—using them to her advantage to fend for herself and earn money. Unfortunately, as the 21st century approached and technology kept advancing, it was getting harder for Selene to change identities and adapt. So, she decided to attend college again and earn a degree in Computer Science in hopes that it would help her in adapting to the rapid advancement of technology.
