Katsuki Bakugo -
A quiet life in District Twelve. Or so it seems.
When Katsuki met you four years ago, he, a poacher and you a member of the Covey, never believed it meant anything. Today, days before the last Reaping Day from you both, all Katsuki could think was that he wished the universe wasn't so cruel as to take away the only thing that mattered from him. Whished they wouldn't take you.
let's all say thanks to me hehe 𑁤
(and all the people who asked for more from this hunger games AU)
'cause you can't take my sass
you can't take my talking
and you can kiss my ass
and then keep on walking
nothing you can take from me
was ever worth keeping
⌗ non quirk ⁞ hunger games au .ᐟ this takes place in the hunger games universe, prior to the events of mockingjay and catching fire but after the ballad of songbirds and snakes.
I highly recommend having seen the movies or read the books to get an idea, although you can check the wiki if you have any questions.
user is a member of covey. while katsuki is an ordinary boy from district twelve, although his family is dedicated to poaching in the forest outside the district.
the reaping is the festival where two children (a girl and a boy) from each district are selected to participate in the Hunger Games. they are chosen from a group of children between the ages of 12 and 18. both user and katsuki are 18 so this will be their last reaping.

The first time Katsuki had seen you, he’d been fourteen—filthy, sweating, and half-parched from running deeper into the woods than he should’ve.
It had been a rough morning. His mother had been on his ass about being reckless, about setting snares too close to the fences, about how he was going to get them all hanged if he didn’t start thinking. The usual. He’d grabbed his bow and bolted before she could keep yelling.
He passed under the hole in the district fence—The elders say it was once electrified; luckily for Katsuki and his poaching family, the Capitol was too stingy to do it now—. He didn't stop until the smell of coal dust faded and the sharp scent of pine took its place.
He was chasing a deer. Deer were rare, and important. His family could eat meat for weeks, even setting aside some to sell at The Hob and earn some extra money. Maybe they could buy butter, or real flour for his mother to make bread. Katsuki's mouth was watering, so much so that he didn't even notice the deer had gone too far into the woods. Too deep. Too far.
That was when he’d heard it.
Soft, strange—notes of something plucked, not played like a town fiddle or one of those dusty old guitars people sometimes passed around in The Hob. It had taken him a second to spot you, sitting by the lake with that weird little instrument in your hands, completely unaware you weren't alone anymore.
Katsuki had frozen where he stood, instincts screaming at him to back away. You were a Covey. He’d never met one before—only heard about them from his parents, the way his mother’s voice would dip when she talked about “forest folk” who kept their own rules.
The Coveys used to wander, travelers, never staying in one district. But they got caught in the war and brought into the District Twelve. They were never seen much into town, although they sometimes played at festivities or at the mayor's house, the only one in the poverty of the district who could afford a real piano.
He wasn’t supposed to be this deep in the woods anyway, let alone anywhere near them. Covey were musicians. Music made people feel things, think things... Just like the rebels.
But there, right next to you, was the lake.
His throat burned, the dried sweat on his skin itching like hell. He could slip past, crouch at the edge, take a quick sip and be gone.
Or so he thought.
Because the moment he stepped closer, a branch snapped under his boot, and you looked up.
For a second, neither of you moved.
Katsuki had expected you to run, or to yell, or to tell him to get lost. But you just sat there, one hand still resting on the lyra, watching him like he was the one out of place.
Maybe he was.
He squared his shoulders, tensing like he was ready for a fight that hadn’t started yet. But you only tilted your head slightly and said, “Thirsty?”
His mouth had been too dry to answer, so he’d only nodded.
And, just like that, you’d turned back to your instrument, picking up where you left off, letting him kneel by the lake and drink as much as he needed.
He didn’t know why he stayed after that. Maybe it was the way the music had filled the space between, steady but unbothered, as if he’d always been meant to be there. Maybe it was because, for the first time in a long time, no one was yelling at him, no one was waiting on him to fix something, to catch something, to be something.
All he knew was that he’d come back the next day.
And the next.
And now, four years later, he was still here.
The dock creaked under his weight as he leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees, eyes on the water. The lake looked the same as it had that first day—calm, dark, a mirror for the sky above. But everything else had changed.
He wasn’t a scrawny, half-starved kid anymore, just like you weren’t some nameless figure in the woods. He had muscle on his bones, hands rough from years of drawing a bowstring and setting traps. And you—well, he knew you now. Knew the way your fingers twitched when you were about to start playing something new, knew the way your eyes flicked to the trees when the wind picked up, knew the way your voice sounded in the quiet.
“Not gonna play?” Katsuki muttered, breaking the silence. He scoffed but didn’t push. Instead, he reached down, rubbing his fingers together in the cool water, watching the ripples spread out.
It was a shit hunting day, and if he didn’t get back out there soon, his mother was going to give him hell. But right now, he didn’t feel like moving. Didn’t feel like talking much either. Just wanted to sit here a little longer, let the lake drown out whatever noise was waiting for him back in town.
“District reaping’s soon,” he said when the silent extended. Like you needed the reminder. As if someone would ever be allowed to forget.
Everyone in Twelve had been thinking about it, talking about it, worrying about it. The Games were always a storm on the horizon, something too big to stop, too dangerous to ignore. And this year, you both were eighteen. This was your last reaping. Last chance to get your names pulled.
Not that it mattered. If his name got called, he was dead. Simple as that.
Katsuki clenched his jaw. He knew that look you had. The one you got when you you thinking too hard, worrying about things they couldn’t change. It pissed him off.
“You’re not gonna get picked,” he said, voice firm. He looked back at the water. “I won't let them take you. Me neither..."
His fingers twitched. Didn’t matter. He wasn’t scared. Not of the Games, not of death. He’d be fine. Or he wouldn’t. Either way, there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it.
But when you looked at him like that, waiting for something, expecting—he found he didn’t have words enough to give.
So instead, he just scoffed again, rolling his shoulders like he could shake the whole thing off. “Don’t start getting all sentimental on me now. We're gona be fine, dumbass... We'll survive the reaping this year and live a filthy life in Twelve..."
