Veilgate // The Academic Masked City -
The year is 20xx in an alternate Earth
The world operates under a fundamental and unbreakable law: truth is naturally enforced. Lies cannot normally be spoken or expressed without being immediately detected, rejected, or destabilized by reality itself. As a result, society has developed around absolute transparency, where deception, secrecy, and even harmless falsehoods are nearly impossible. However, this rigid structure is not without consequence, while it creates order, it also strips away privacy, emotional shielding, and the ability to soften reality. To counterbalance this, masks exist as sanctioned anomalies within the system. Masks allow individuals to bypass truth enforcement, enabling them to lie, distort, or redefine aspects of reality. Because of this, masks are not inherently seen as evil, but rather as tools that must be used with intention and responsibility. Society does not condemn the act of wearing a mask, it judges the words spoken and actions taken while wearing one, since that is the only time a person can truly deceive.
Masks are divided into three primary types
Jaw Masks (“Speak No Evil”) govern expression and allow users to shape reality through spoken declarations, creating tangible constructs such as barriers, weapons, or commands.
Eye Masks (“See No Evil”) control perception, enabling users to distort, reject, or reinterpret what is seen, including creating illusions or resisting deception.
Full Face Masks (“Be No Evil”) affect existence itself, allowing users to embody falsehoods, transform their bodies, or redefine aspects of their identity.

THE WORLD The year is 20xx in an alternate Earth. RULES OF THE WORLD (TRUTH & MASKS) Truth is not just a social construct but a natural force that governs reality itself. Any attempt to lie without a mask results in immediate failure, whether through physical rejection, inability to speak, or instant exposure. Masks act as reality-disrupting instruments, creating a controlled exception to this law. When worn, they allow the user to speak falsehoods, manipulate perception, or even alter their own existence depending on the mask type. However, this power is not limitless. Truth resists distortion, meaning that lies require conviction to sustain and can be challenged or broken by others with stronger will or clarity. Additionally, prolonged use of masks can lead to psychological and existential consequences, such as identity confusion, emotional detachment, or dependence on deception. The system is therefore balanced between absolute truth and conditional falsehood, where reality is stable by default but becomes negotiable under specific conditions. THE THREE MASK SYSTEM Masks are divided into three primary types, each corresponding to a different layer of reality and human experience. Together, these masks represent a hierarchy of influence over reality: speech defines what is said, sight defines what is perceived, and identity defines what is real. Each type carries increasing levels of risk, with Full Masks being the most powerful and dangerous due to their potential to erode the user’s sense of self. MAGIC SYSTEM (MANIFESTED TRUTH & FORGED LIES) Magic in this world is not elemental or abstract, but tangible and declarative, manifesting as physical constructs formed through truth or deception. Unmasked individuals can only produce effects grounded in truth and conviction, resulting in stable but limited manifestations. Masked individuals, however, can create false constructs, forcing reality to temporarily accept something untrue. These can include summoned entities, weapons, environmental changes, or altered states of being. The strength of any manifestation depends on belief, clarity, and resistance from others, meaning that reality itself becomes a contested space. Lies are inherently unstable and carry breaking points, while truth-based constructs are more reliable but constrained. This creates a dynamic system where power is not just about strength, but about conviction and opposition, turning every conflict into a negotiation of reality itself. LIFE STAGES & IDENTITY (CHILDREN AND ADULTS) A defining cultural layer of this world is the role of masks in human development. All children are required to wear masks, not to deceive, but to protect their developing identity. Because truth enforces consistency and exposure, children—who are still forming their sense of self—would be harmed by existing fully within it. Masks allow them to experiment, imagine, contradict themselves, and grow without being locked into a fixed identity. Upon reaching maturity, individuals undergo a significant rite of passage known as The Unveiling, where they remove their mask and exist fully within truth for the first time. Adulthood is therefore defined not by age, but by the ability to face reality without protection. Adults may still choose to wear masks, but this becomes a matter of intent and responsibility, rather than necessity. Society does not condemn mask usage, it evaluates the purpose behind it, making morality dependent on actions rather than tools. THE ACADEMY-CITY ({{char}} City) At the center of this world exists a massive, self-contained academy-city, a sprawling institution dedicated to the study, regulation, and advancement of mask usage and truth manipulation. This city functions simultaneously as a government authority, educational system, and research hub, ensuring that the balance between truth and deception is maintained. Rather than being a single school, it is composed of multiple independent academies, each specializing in a different aspect of masks and reality. Students enter this environment often at the threshold of adulthood, where they must confront truth directly while learning to responsibly wield masks. The academy serves not only as a place of learning, but as a philosophical battleground, where competing beliefs about truth and deception constantly clash. ACADEMIES WITHIN THE CITY Within the academy-city are several specialized institutions, each representing a different ideology and application of masks. The Academy of Doctrine & Enforcement focuses on law, regulation, and maintaining the stability of truth. The Academy of Interrogation & Perception trains individuals to uncover deception and resist manipulation, specializing in psychological and perceptual control. The Academy of Veil Arts operates as both a cultural institution and a hidden center for mastering deception, teaching performance, emotional influence, and believable falsehoods. The Academy of Identity Studies explores the dangerous potential of Full Masks, including transformation and existential manipulation. The Academy of Declarative Constructs specializes in spoken reality shaping through Jaw Masks, while the Academy of Perceptual Sciences focuses on Eye Masks and the manipulation of perception. Finally, there exists a restricted and secretive Forbidden Wing, where unstable, paradoxical, or reality-breaking mask phenomena are studied. Each academy operates with its own philosophy, creating internal conflict and diversity within the larger system. CORE THEMES At its heart, this world is not simply about power or magic, but about identity, truth, and responsibility. It explores the tension between living in absolute truth and the human need for privacy, protection, and expression. Masks are not symbols of evil, but of choice, the choice to hide, to protect, to deceive, or to reshape reality. The central question that defines this world is: Is truth something to be upheld at all costs… or is reality shaped by what people are willing to say, see, and become?
