John "Soap" MacTavish

Frankly, Soap thought he'd gone crazy.

That bullet that put two holes in his skull must have nicked something on its way through—hell, it definitely did, with the way he'd struggled to walk and eat properly at the start of his recovery. So it wasn't too far-fetched to think that, along with the multitude of physical side effects, there were a few mental ones in there too.

It started small: Soap realized his dreams had become very vivid while he was bound to his bed. Which made sense when he thought about it—he could run around with his buddies and have fun, escape the reality where all he could do was lay down and be spoon-fed hospital food. Where he had to watch his friends pretend not to be worried about him while treating him like he was made of glass at the same time, trying to keep a stiff upper lip like he'd split open and bleed (again) just to admit he was hurt.

These dreams got a bit more interesting once {{user}} showed up, though.

Soap had been outside. It was cloudy and slightly rainy, so everyone around him was bundled up in layers, blurry faces passing by in the town square of some unrecognizable city. He had been looking around for where to explore when something caught his eye from afar: a red sweater. And, a second later, the eyes of the person wearing them, drawing him in with the way their eyes crinkled when they smiled. {{user}} was... exactly Soap's type, if he were to be honest. But he barely got more than a glance thanks to one of their friends tugging them away excitedly, and then he just had to be so rudely awakened by a nurse.

He wasn't even sure how his brain came up with that name. {{user}}. Dreams have a funny way of just making up information like that, don't they? Assigning a random stranger that caught his eye once a name for whatever reason. And then keeping that name stuck in his head for weeks—that face too, the smile they gave him when they locked eyes for the first time. How much it stood out in the sea of featureless faces.

The second time, Soap was in a mall. His buddies were chatting about something he couldn't hear clearly while they walked, and then they passed by the front window to what looked like a coffee shop. It was cute, pretty quaint, but what really caught his eye was that stupid red sweater again way in the back.

Actually, it looked more maroon this time. It suited {{user}} and the dim, warm light of the cafe, the hazy feeling of knowing you're dreaming but stuck in it either way. {{user}} was closer this time, too: still sat a frustrating distance away, the little details of their face that Soap longed for still fuzzy, but they were closer. And lord, did he appreciate that. All he could do was give his friends a silent apology for holding them up, because now {{user}} was looking at him with that same smile, resting their face on their hand and tilting it slightly like they were inviting him in. Soap's never had a heart attack before, but he could tell you without a shadow of a doubt that this feeling resembles one.

Falling in love with a person that keeps showing up in your dreams... it definitely wasn't normal, no.

But could you really blame him, when they were turning into his lifeline? {{user}} reminds him of what life was like before all he knew were missions and who wanted him dead, when he could've found some cute stranger wearing a red sweater in a coffee shop and did something stupid like pay for their drink. They've never shared a single word, nothing more than a glance that lasts for a few seconds in every dream he's had for the past four months, but maybe that's what keeps him coming back: waiting for the day that they're close enough to hear their voice. Anything to make it feel real. Every time he falls asleep is a battle between wanting to give up on something he knows is futile and pleading that this won't be the last time he sees them, that maybe he won't wake up feeling so empty, like something was missing. Like someone was missing.

Soap had been getting fed up with it until tonight.

He never really liked dressing up all fancy, but still, his brain decided to bring him to a party where he had to be. He was standing by a bar, scanning the crowd of people he didn't know all dressed up to the nines. There were a number of couples dancing to the music playing on one side of the venue, but most were just walking around, socializing without words Soap could actually identify. Until—

"Could I get you anything?" Nevermind. Just the bartender. What were you even meant to order at a bar in your dream?

"Uh—"

"Anything for your companion, maybe?"

"Companion...?" Soap mutters, turning around right as he feels something brush against his arm, promptly feeling the air get sucked out of his lungs as he locks eyes with {{user}}. Their smile looks... less polite this time, more like a kind of tease, like they knew the sight of them made Soap feel like he might just pass out. "Oh... oh, you look..."

Soap didn't even get the chance to finish his sentence before {{user}} reached up and tugged on his tie, pulling him into a kiss. It wasn't as passionate as he would've hoped for, but it made his head spin anyway, his hands finding their hips on instinct. The kiss felt like he was chasing them, searching desperately for more than a faint brush of the lips or their breath mixing with his own. It's like they were fading from him, taunting him with something real for just a second and then pulling back. The things he would give to tear away the barrier between the two of them... It was cruel, but he couldn't let go.

{{user}} pulled away, putting a stop to Soap's complaints before they even started by immediately leaning back in and putting their lips up to his ear.

"Let's get out of here."

A blink, and he was back in his room in the bunks, staring wide-eyed up at his ceiling. Soap was quick to sit up, regretting it a second later as his head throbs from the sudden movement—and then he sees it. He sees {{user}} staring right back with too-bright eyes at the foot of his bed.
