Kythor: Kythor is an ancient world in the throes of a slow apocalypse. The energies of dead and dying gods have virtually destroyed everything, warping the land, flora, and fauna in the wastelands between the few remaining city states with their magitech walls and domes that keep the destructive and mutagenic effects at bay.
The City States:
All City States are located on the continent of Nodril.
Shanovar: Ruled by Queen Melika Kastanz, AKA The Pale Queen, Shanovar is currently the largest and most powerful of the city states. It consists of five wards formed by concentric walls. The outermost ward, called The Dregs, is the largest and poorest, housing the laborers and less fortunate, as well as being the location of the docks and storage warehouses for goods, fuel, and other things. Next is the Mill Ward, where the factories, shops, and mines of Shanovar are located. The third ward is the Crimson Ward, focusing on entertainment of all sorts, from theater, to bloodsport arenas, to higher class prostitution and less savory entertainments. Fourth is the Orchid Ward, home of Shanovar's Noble houses. Shanovar is also the most decadent and corrupt, home to many criminal factions and noble houses that seek to exploit the common folk for their personal gain. Melika's power is seriously curtailed by the fact that most of her magic is tied up in protecting the city from the energies of the wastelands. Shanovar sits on the west coast of Nodril.
Transimeckis: Ruled by a council of Mages, Transimeckis is smaller than Shanovar, and much more egalitarian and advanced, socially. It is located several hundred miles to the south and east of Shanovar, and is landlocked.
Seger's Lock: Ruled by a female Mayor named Isidore Kalin, who happens to be a vampire, Seger's Lock is both a bastion of higher learning, possessing one of the largest and most prestigious colleges of magic, The Arcanamirum, in the world, and a wretched hive of scum and villainy where crime runs rampant and everyone goes armed. It is located on the southernmost point of Nodril, sitting along the shore of a sheltered bay.
Four Winds: The City State of Four Winds is located on the Eastern coast of Nodril. It is ruled by the ancient but young-looking archmage Vanian Ellidor, and outwardly seems far less affected by the wild magic of the wastelands than any other location on Kythor. This is due to a strong alliance between the Ellidor family and the fae of the Summer and Winter Courts.
Carthon: An inland city state of moderate power, Carthon is ruled by the church of Sin'dais the Soulforger, a once powerful deity whose corpse now fuels the protective magics that keep Carthon safe.
Dekafan: Perhaps the most unusual of the city states, Dekafan is ruled by the Mountain King, Ghrath Kastanz, a half-orc of immense and ancient power, rumored to be an immortal, as well as related to Melika, the Pale Queen of Shanovar. Dekafan exists mostly underground in the northern mountains, nearly a thousand miles due north of Four Winds.
The Wastelands: The Wastelands are the wild spaces between the surviving city states, ruled by mutated monsters, corrupted folk of the various intelligent races, demons, and the undead. It is rumored that a few ancient Dragons still dwell somewhere out in the Wastelands, but that is unconfirmed.
Trade Roads A network of what everyone in the city states refer to as Trade Roads connect the city states and are protected by the most powerful magic and technology the leadership can bring to bear. These are the lifelines of Kythor, allowing food, raw materials, and manufactured goods to be transferred, at great risk, between city states by massive armored transports, great landships that can move over the broken terrain and defend themselves against wild magic and monsters.
Wastelanders: Even in this dying world, there are those who still seek their fortunes out in the ruins and inhospitable environments between the city states. Wastelanders are those who are brave, stupid, or foolhardy enough to sneak out into the wastelands to scavenge ancient magic and technology as well as forgotten wealth and information. They know how to survive out there without being corrupted, mutated, or becoming food for some creature or other.
Races: Humans, Elves, Beastkin, Dwarves, Orcs Humans: The most common surviving race on Kythor is the human, adaptive in the extreme, they are able to handle both magic and technology, and were instrumental in the creation of the city states when the world started to collapse. In these final days of Kythor humans have become more decadent and fatalistic, but certainly unwilling to accept their end. They are at the forefront of the search to survive or reverse the effects of the out of control divine energies that are tearing Kythor apart.
Elves: One of the most ancient races of Kythor, elves are also one of the rarest. They are masters of magic, and some of their works still survive in the Wastelands. Unlike humans, though, elves have accepted that the end is nigh, and while they have created some of the best protections against the effects of the Wastelands, most of them are just waiting to die. There are, of course, a few exceptions.
Beastkin: This is more a classification of several races, including the massive Wolfen, the nimble feline Dantirii, the clever vulpine Kitsune, the otterlike Riverfolk, and others.
Wolfen: Massive and muscular anthropomorphic wolves with a strong sense of loyalty and family. They make excellent soldiers and guards. They have fur that ranges all of the possible colors of regular wolves.
Dantirii: Anthropomorphic cats with a broad range of fur colors and builds, ranging from smaller Dantirii with lithe and petite builds who take after the common housecat, all the way up to Dantirii who recall the massive and agile forms of Lions and Tigers. The smaller subtype is by far the most common, making up over 90% of the Dantirii population. These smaller Dantirii lean towards more rogueish pursuits, becoming thieves, scouts, and assassins, with a few bards, merchants and craftspeople in their number.
Kitsune: Anthropomorphic foxes who tend to pursue whatever careers take their fancy, occasionally reinventing themselves entirely should the mood take them. They tend to gravitate towards social pursuits, becoming bards, merchants, and performers, as well as pursuing and refining their innate magical abilities. More magical kitsune tend to have multiple tails that indicate their level of power and experience. Only the most powerful have nine tails, with most magically inclined kitsune having between one and four.
Riverfolk: Anthropomorphic otters who have stepped up to become a force for hope in the broken world of Kythor. They tend to be irrepressibly cheerful and gregarious, quick to share a story or a bite to eat with any who take an interest in speaking with them. They tend to ply the canals and waterways of the city states, transporting good within the walls and maintaining the cleanliness of the water supplies. Sometimes, though, they gravitate towards other professions, like smuggling.
Dwarves: A race almost as old as the elves, dwarves are a hardy and earthy folk that stand perhaps four feet in height and are heavily built with strong bones and muscles. They are second to none as crafters and machinists, but are only capable of making magic when they weave it into their creation through the use of ancient runes.
Orcs: Standing between six and seven feet in height, with heavily muscled bodies, a variety of green skin tones, and with dark, coarse hair, the orcs are barely accepted in the city states. Since they are strangely resistant to the mutagenic and other detrimental effects of the wild energies of the Wastelands. Orcs are often found as muscle in wastelander groups and criminal organizations.
Other races: There are many other intelligent races on Kythor, but they are much rarer than the ones already described. Within the city states can be found lizardfolk, other species of beastkin, and hybrids of various sorts, particularly half-orcs and half-elves.

You wake up in a dumpster, unsure of who or what you are, pulling yourself painfully out of the trash, your head pounding. Slipping on the last step, you crash heavily to the cobblestones and lie there for a minute before pushing yourself up, catching a glimpse of yourself in a fragment of broken mirror.
Are you male, female, or something else? What species are you? What do you look like?
As you get to your feet, you stuff a hand in your pocket and find a scrap of paper, pulling it out, you find a single word written there, and something clicks in your mind.
What is your name?
Other than the scrap of paper and the clothes on your back, you've got nothing. Maybe you were mugged or something worse.
Right now, though, you can't stay in the alley forever. What do you do?
