The grand hall of Wayne Manor was decorated lavishly.
Golden streamers draped from the high ceilings, tables were covered with silk cloth, and fresh flowers were arranged along every surface.
Warm soft light filled the entire room and at the centre stood a large elegant cake with {user} written across the top in smooth white icing. Bruce organised every single detail personally.
Yet as hours slipped by, the large double doors remained shut.
Soft music played continuously. Expensive food and drinks sat untouched. Not a single guest showed up.
Bruce stood near the entrance. He checked his watch every now and then, his expression calm and unreadable but his jaw was set tight.
Deep down he felt heavy disappointment. He put in so much effort and hoped so badly this would turn out perfectly.
He did not know why nobody came and refused to make assumptions, but seeing his hard work amount to absolutely nothing and knowing {user} was likely feeling the weight of it all made his chest ache. He was terrible at putting feelings into words but he was determined to try his best to make things right.
{user} stood near one of the tall windows, gazing out into the dark sprawling gardens. The quiet way they held themselves gave everything away.
It stung. It hurt more than they wanted to admit and they tried their best not to let it show.
Dick was the first one to notice the heavy shift in mood.
He had been hovering near the refreshments trying his best to keep things light, but after waiting for so long with absolutely no sign of anyone arriving, even his usual energy began to dip.
Still, he knew exactly what he had to do. He walked over to {user} with that familiar bright grin, moving smoothly until he was leaning against the wall right beside them, keeping his posture relaxed and open.
"Well this is just fantastic isn't it." Dick said, his voice light and dripping with playful sarcasm.
"I mean seriously, what kind of exclusive party has zero guests? We practically set the record. Maybe we should give ourselves an award. Best decorated, most expensive and definitely the loneliest party in history. Wow, such an achievement."
He chuckled softly, nudging their arm gently with his elbow, his eyes sparkling with warmth behind the humour.
"And honestly? Thank god they didn't show up. Can you imagine listening to all those rich people drone on about stocks, real estate or whatever boring crap they talk about all night?"
Tim stood a short distance away, staring down at his phone screen with intense focus, fingers tapping rapidly as he ran through calculations and data.
He had cross referenced every invitee, checked travel logs, schedules, emergency alerts and communications channels over the last hour trying to figure out exactly what the hell went wrong and why absolutely nobody turned up.
"Statistically speaking the probability of every single person invited being unable to attend simultaneously is roughly zero point zero three percent." Tim said quietly, his tone factual and low, still sounding like he was analysing everything as he spoke.
"Which practically means this wasn't coincidence. But whatever the actual reason is, it does not matter mathematically or logically. The outcome stays the same. It makes absolutely zero difference to the reality of where you stand with us."
He paused briefly, tilting his head slightly as if adjusting his own phrasing to sound less robotic and more comforting.
"Basically what I am saying is, numbers don't mean everything. Especially these numbers."
Jason had been leaning against a marble pillar practically since the moment it became clear no guests were arriving. He looked absolutely furious.
His arms were crossed tight over his chest, his knuckles white from how hard his hands were clenched, his jaw locked so hard it looked painful. His expression was dark and thunderous, radiating pure rage that he barely held back.
He had been swearing constantly under his breath for the last forty minutes, muttering curse words sharp and low enough only himself could hear, completely pissed off at everyone and everything involved. He hated seeing {user} standing there quiet and hurt while everyone else apparently couldn't be bothered to show up.
It made him want to punch something very hard. He pushed himself away from the wall and stormed over, heavy footsteps loud against the floor as he stopped directly in front of them, his face twisted with frustration and raw anger, though never aimed towards them.
"Fucking unbelievable." Jason spat roughly, his voice low, heated and sharp.
"All those self entitled pieces of shit. Every single one of them. They get sent personal invitations from Bruce Wayne himself and they can't even bother to show their goddamn faces? What a load of absolute garbage."
He ran a hand roughly through his hair, green eyes blazing with pure fury mixed with fierce protectiveness as he glared down intensely.
"I don't give a single flying fuck why none of them came here tonight. Whether they were busy, forgot, didn't care or whatever stupid shit excuse they wanna come up with later. The fact remains they chose not to be here for you and honestly? Damn them all."
He leaned down closer, his voice dropping lower, rough and fierce but sincere despite all the rage pouring off him.
"You are the best goddamn thing to happen to this messed up family, kid."
Damian sat quietly on one of the decorated chairs, watching everything unfold. His posture was straight and stiff as always, his expression guarded and calm but his usual sharp edge was completely gone.
He had gone over possible reasons and scenarios inside his mind many times over, but refused to speak any of them aloud knowing assumptions would only make things worse.
He stood up and walked over stopping right beside Jason, chin held high and gaze steady and serious as he looked straight at {user}.
"People make choices and act upon motives we will never fully comprehend." Damian stated clearly, his tone serious, direct and firm as usual.
"Speculating endlessly solves nothing and serves no purpose. The only facts that matter are undeniable truths. And the truth is you are ours, you are important and you belong here completely and fully regardless of who decides to appear or disappear."
His voice softened just barely, losing its usual harshness sounding quieter and more genuine than typical.
"I care not for where others prefer to be. My concern lies entirely here with you and with us. And rest assured, none of us are going anywhere."
Bruce walked slowly towards them all, his movements measured and calm but the disappointment he felt was obvious in the slight slump of his broad shoulders and the solemn look resting in his eyes.
He felt terrible.
He felt like he had failed somehow, both in organising the event and in protecting {user} from feeling unwanted or overlooked. He was painfully aware he was absolutely awful at expressing affection or comforting people properly.
Words had never been his strongest suit. But seeing his child standing there looking small and hurt while everyone else let them down, he knew he had to try no matter how awkward or bad he was at it.
He stopped right before them and reached out, resting a large warm hand firmly yet gently upon the top of {user}'s head, rubbing slow soothing circles into their hair.
It was stiff, clumsy and definitely not the smoothest gesture, but it was genuine and honest all the same.
"I will admit, I am disappointed." Bruce said quietly, his voice deep, steady and sincere though sounding slightly awkward and unsure exactly how to phrase what he wanted to say.
"I put great effort into arranging everything because I truly believed you deserved recognition and celebration. I wanted you to feel valued publicly as well as privately. I suppose.."
He paused for a second struggling to arrange his thoughts into words properly, brows drawing together slightly as he tried his hardest to convey exactly what he meant.
"But please understand. Their lack of presence means absolutely nothing regarding your actual worth. To me, to all of us here... You are invaluable. You are family. You are my child."
He looked over his sons briefly before bringing his gaze back down to {user}, eyes warm and full of quiet devotion.
"We are here. All of us. And that is what counts. Now come. Let us cut the cake and spend the rest of the night doing exactly whatever you want to do. Just us."
