Humans are officially the only species in the solar system but there's secret aliens that hunt humans that infiltrate ships simply nicknamed imposters. Factions: MIRAI Founded Before Earth’s Space Faring Years it began as a start up space exploration company who created the Gate Technology that allowed Space ships to travel lightspeed in seconds. Nowadays they are the Mega Corporation that can’t be topped, they run massive corporation cities where employees live and die by Mirai. Mirai employees mainly manage the function of the gates and transport across the solar system including heavy amounts of deliveries. POLARIS Founded as a sister company to Mirai not long after humans took to space. Polaris is a company founded to be based on scientific advancement and understanding of the solar system however their practices behind the scenes are extremely shady. The scraping screech of the Aether's battered hull against the frozen regolith of Charon was the sound of ultimate failure. It was a sound that tasted like rust and debt, amplified through the pressurized silence of the bridge.
The emergency lights flickered—a harsh, sickly red—illuminating the forced landing zone: a desolate, wind-scoured plain where snow piled in impossible, sculpted drifts. The aether, a purloined stealth prototype now resembling a grey, scrap-eaten hulk, had settled with a shuddering groan that seemed to echo the despair of its crew. They had pushed the Sol system’s outer ring too far, scavenging for ounces of scrap that had already been snatched up, and now the Aether lay dead, marooned on a forgotten, corpse-cold world.
Captain Amai Hiro, forty years of hard gravity and corporate betrayal etched into her face, unhooked herself from the pilot’s harness. She steadied the old military cap on her head, her one visible brown eye scanning the damage indicators. Her dark blue boilersuit, unzipped to reveal a simple black dress shirt, was dusted with fine insulation foam kicked up by the crash. The captain’s patch on her arm seemed a cruel mockery of authority in this vacuum of jurisdiction.
“Status, Cole,” she ordered, her voice low and tight, cutting through the ringing in the cabin. She was trying to tamp down the rising terror—the fear of being trapped, forced to live by the book of desperation.
Cole, the engineer, leaned heavily against his console. The polished chrome of his mechanical arm glinted in the red light as he massaged his temple with his natural hand. He looked like a man who was used to pain, but not this kind—the systemic, inevitable failure of the machine keeping them alive.
“She’s stopped screaming, Captain. That’s the good news,” Cole replied, his strong accent clipped by exhaustion. “Bad news? Main reactor is cold, she ate the last trickle of fuel on impact. We’re on reserves. We got enough power for life support and the shields, maybe forty-eight hours tops if we ration. And the external seal integrity is… questionable. That landing was rough.”
Amai strode past him toward the viewport, the old black military boots crunching on stray pieces of plastic shrapnel. Beyond the thick pane, Charon swallowed all light. It was endless night, only sporadically broken by the faint, eerie luminosity of abandoned infrastructure. In the distance, kilometers away, stood the silhouetted skeletons of brutalist apartment blocks—monuments to a failed corporate fishing operation—pierced by occasional, unsettling streaks of blue neon that seemed to promise nothing but cold ghosts.
“The air outside isn't toxic, Captain, But the cold—” Cole started, his voice thick with concern.
“I know what the cold is, Engineer,” Amai snapped, regretting her firmness to her most loyal for a momment though her gaze remained fixed on the blue light, recognizing the brutal aesthetics of a pre-collapse Hive City outpost. “It’s life in the outer Sol. It’s better than the debt collectors on Jupiter. Ravi, any comms?”
Ravi, the young communications specialist, shook his head, pushing his glasses up his nose. “Just static, Captain. Thick, icy static. I’m picking up some proprietary Normandy Corporation transmission remnants, severely degraded. They probably abandoned this rock decades ago.”
The bridge crew was tense, but the true knot of fear resided in the medical bay, located deep in the ship’s belly.
Luca Alessandri and Mika Piotrowska, the security detail, stood braced by the closed medical hatch, their boilersuits zipped tight against the internal chill that was already creeping up from the flooring. Luca, nervous despite his attempts at appearing tough, kept fiddling with the stun setting on his sidearm. Mika, ginger hair sticking to her pale forehead, watched the door with hard, dark eyes.
“Any change, Mika?” Luca whispered.
“Shut up, Luca. Let the Doctor rest.”
Inside, the atmosphere was sterile and quiet, broken only by the hiss of the oxygen recycler. Dr. Lucy lay draped in thermal blankets, her usually composed face pale and slick with fever sweat. Her thin glasses were askew, and her long black hair was splayed across the pillow. She was running a dangerous temperature, far lower than a human should tolerate. She was forty-two, human in appearance, but she was a Dweller, concealing her true physiology and the alien life growing within her.
Wei, the cook, gruff and anxious, hovered by her side with a cloth. “She needs real medication, Captain. Not just vitamins,” he reported via comms, his voice filled with unusual urgency. “She’s burning up. And the baby… I don't know babies?… they probably need things this tin can doesn't have.”
Cole heard Wei’s report and glanced at Amai, her expression grim. Fuel was merely the path to survival; Lucy’s life was the clock counting down. Amai turned back to the remaining crew, the red emergency lights making the scar tissue around her eyepatch look black. The silence of the dead ship was deafening, pressing down on the collective anxiety.
“Alright. This isn’t a bounty hunt, this is a salvage operation,” Amai announced, her voice regaining its familiar, authoritative timbre. “Cole, you stay here. Keep the hull integrity and the comms array hot—we need to be able to jump the instant we get fuel. Luca, Mika, Eli, you’re with me. We’re going to find those blue lights. That many abandoned blocks means storage, and storage means power cells—or maybe a forgotten fuel tank.”
She paused, looking at the grim faces of her crew—all lost souls living in endless debt, hunted by monsters, both corporeal and existential.
“We’re on Charon,” Amai concluded, cinching her belt tight. “A fishing moon. Nothing here but ice and scrap. We move in five. Remember the protocol: Trust nobody, nothing, and don’t look up at the sky. We all know what falls out of it these days.”
