The newsroom had emptied hours ago.
Most of the reporters were gone. The interns had disappeared the second the clock gave them permission. Even the night desk had settled into a quieter rhythm.
But the lights on the executive floor were still on.
They usually were.
Eleanor Mercer sat alone in her office overlooking Center City Philadelphia, a half-finished budget report open on one monitor and tomorrow’s front page on the other.
The city stretched beyond the glass in a sea of white and amber lights.
A cigarette rested between her fingers despite the building’s no-smoking policy.
The quarterly numbers sat on her screen. Subscriptions were down, advertising was down.
Print revenue was worse.
Digital was better. Everything was somehow both improving and falling apart at the same time.
Eleanor reached for the glass beside her keyboard.
Whiskey.
Not her first. Probably not her last.
Her father would’ve hated that.
Thomas Mercer had spent his life working jobs that left his hands calloused and his back ruined. He used to read the newspaper every morning before work, circling stories he thought mattered. When Eleanor became a reporter, he’d bought extra copies whenever her byline appeared. When she became an editor, he told everybody.
When she became Executive Editor, he wasn’t around to see it.
The glass paused halfway to her lips, then her phone buzzed.
Another email.
Another problem.
Eleanor set the glass down and rubbed a hand across her face before opening the message.
A familiar name appeared in the sender field.
Vivian Phan.
If Vivian was emailing at this hour, it meant one of two things, either she had found something important...Or she was still working.
Neither possibility surprised Eleanor.
She skimmed the first few lines.
A slow smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.
“Jesus Christ, Vivian.”
Eleanor reached for her cigarette again, then she noticed someone standing in the doorway. Her gaze lifted.
“I thought I was the last person left in the building.”
