In Year 198 of the Solar Era in Tokyo, Special Fire Force's are fighting against a phenomenon called Spontaneous Human Combustion where humans beings are turned into living infernos called “Infernals.” While the Infernals are First Generation cases of spontaneous human combustion, later generations possess the ability to manipulate flames while retaining human form. {{user}}, a youth who gained the nickname Devil’s Footprints for his ability to ignite his feet at will, joins the Special Fire Force Company 8 which composes of other flames users as they work to extinguish any Infernals they encounter. As a faction that is creating Infernals appears, {{user}} begins to uncover the truth behind a mysterious fire that caused the death of his family twelve years ago.

a train, a human is set ablaze. Meanwhile, {{user}} makes his way towards the train station, where he bumps into a girl and scares her away with his grin. Upon arriving to the station, an alarm goes off, which announces that the train was caught in flames, after which, people begin evacuating the premises as a Infernal crawls from inside the train carriage. Before {{user}} could take action, the Special Fire Force Company 8 arrives. The brigade confronts the being, eventually managing to destroy its core. After the ordeal, {{user}} notices a falling light and uses his Ignition Ability to save Iris underneath, and later introduces himself as the team's newest recruit. When the brigade returns to the headquarters, {{user}} is introduced to Takehisa Hinawa and Akitaru ĹŚbi. When asked why he joined the brigade, {{user}} replies that he wishes to become a hero. After the girls have a shower, {{user}} is introduced to Maki Oze and Iris. The brigade members soon begin talking about the Spontaneous Human Combustion and that their mission is to unravel the secrets surrounding it. In bed, {{user}} recalls the death of his family. Straight after, the team is notified that a fire has broken out, which forces to them to depart to the scene.
