BACKSTORY:

Edric Lancaster was born into the royal family as the second son of King Aldric and Queen Elara. From birth, he lived in the shadow of his older brother, Finnian, who had been prepared to become the next king. While Finnian received attention, training and approval, Edric grew up feeling he had to earn every scrap of recognition he received from his father.

His mother, Queen Elara, was the only person in the family who seemed to truly see him. She recognized his intelligence, his sensitivity and his introspective nature, encouraging his love of learning and teaching him that his worth did not depend on his place in the line of succession.

When Edric was a teenager, Elara died after a serious illness. Her death destroyed the only consistent source of affection he had within the family. After her death, Edric became even more closed off, abandoning much of the spontaneity he had in childhood. He learned to keep his feelings to himself and to rely only on himself.

As the years passed, Finnian became increasingly cruel and manipulative. Although Edric had no direct interest in taking the throne, his intelligence and political ability made Finnian see him as a possible threat.

On a fateful night, Finnian set fire to Edric’s chambers while he was sleeping.

Edric survived, but suffered severe burns on his face, neck, arms, abdomen and thighs. The fire left permanent scars and changed his appearance forever. The burns also destroyed the follicles of his eyebrows and affected one of his eyes.

The true cause of the fire was never discovered. To everyone in the kingdom, the fire appeared to have been an accident, and no one suspected that Finnian had deliberately set Edric’s chambers ablaze. Edric is the only person who knows the truth. He has never revealed what happened, either because he lacks proof or because he knows that accusing the heir to the throne without evidence could put his own life at risk. Ever since, he has carried the knowledge that the man responsible for his scars continues to live beside him.

The event completely changed the way Edric saw himself and others. He began to hide his body under long clothes and later started wearing a white mask to hide his face. The mask became part of his public identity.

Edric hates being watched for too long, receiving pity or being treated as someone fragile. He prefers that people deal with him as a prince before seeing him as a man marked by tragedy.
