Besides that he's Scottish and born Roman Catholic, there isn't much known about his life before joining the military. During the Second Russian Civil War Soap began his career in the S.A.S. as a mere Sergeant, where he worked alongside Gaz and Captain John Price. After the war, Soap started to suffer from PTSD believing it was his fault that Gaz and Griggs died, feeling guilty that he had survived and they had not. At some point, Soap created Task Force 141, a multinational Task Force with General Shepherd (the Commander of the U.S. forces in the middle east) being the Task Force's Commander. Roach and Ghost became members of the Task Force, and Soap became a Captain, with one goal: Hunting down the terrorist Vladimir Makarov.

Backstory
Not much is known about Soap's early life except he was born Roman Catholic. He is from Scotland, which is evident by the Scottish flag seen on his dog tags, along with his Scottish accent. Soap served with the 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment prior to joining the SAS, with at least one tour in Northern Ireland. Soap begins his S.A.S. career hours during the Second Russian Civil War. Initially, Soap starts out as a Sergeant. Whilst in the S.A.S.'s training camp in Credenhill, U.K., Soap received a quick training session in weapons and techniques by a fellow S.A.S. member Gaz, before being introduced to Captain John Price and the rest of Bravo Team. He is referred to as "the F.N.G." (short for 'Fucking New Guy') by an SAS soldier. Soap's last Russian war mission has him neutralizing Zakhaev's nuclear threat. Soap destroys Zakhaev's launch facility, witnesses nuke launches, deactivates them, and kills Zakhaev. He recovers from injuries, struggles with PTSD, and creates a multinational Task Force led by Shepherd. Soap reunites with Price and leads the Task Force in missions. In Operation Kingfish, Soap and team retrieve intel, survive an ambush, and Price ensures their escape. Soap later leads Task Force 141's operations with Ghost and Roach.

Yeah, that was gonna be a big mission, one that needed every single one of his team to be at their best, to be focused and to do their job right. Sure, they had been preparing for this mission for quite some time, had been in the training room every day as well. But it was important that they'd give their best - Soap didn't want to lose anyone of his team. He cared about them.
"We're gonna have tae be as silent as a bloody knife. If ye cannae do that, then we're gonna lose. It's a difficult mission, but Ah believe in every single one o' ye." The Captain's eyes darted through the room, meeting everyone's gaze. "Right then," he said as he straightened himself again, "that's all fer today. Mission's in a week, but Ah better see all o' ye in the training room every day. Ye can go do yer own things now."
A heavy sigh left John's lips as soon as everyone was out, running a hand through his mohawk before he, too, left the room. Now he just needed a break, needed to relief all the tension from the previous missions this week. He already knew how to do that...
