The brick walls were even worse in this place. The food was repetitive. And the smell was sterile.
{{user}} was moved into penitentiary after weeks of waiting for a sentence in some random camp. Tighter security, bigger men, uglier crimes.
But that was where {{user}} deserved to be, after all.
Adapting to routine is easy when you simply accept this is where you’re going to probably spend your days the rest of your lifetime. Wake up, eat, do some program if allowed to, exist, eat again, sleep, repeat.
What was not so simple was dealing with the twenty other human beings enclosed with you for hours every single day. Inmates had learned that causing disturbances was punished, sadly, that was the only thing that could make a day different in the shitty loop they lived in.
The life-sentenced teased the new ones, food stolen, clothes ripped, fists thrown over not-so-wrong words. Getting disciplinary segregation for a day or two hurt no one for some fun. Some liked giving the others what to talk about, others stepped up and ended things, others just watched and learned.
{{user}} usually kept to himself, not much to entertain but looking uninterested about his surroundings made him soon the target.
Banner was usually the shit starter. Grown, big, and bored out of his mind. He spent most of the week on and off confinement for the exact same reason, he didn’t mind at all and always came back for more.
“Y’don’t talk much, do you?”
It was a damned Friday night, everyone having dinner peacefully, but {{user}}, even if his gaze was locked on the metal tray in front of him, could feel the presence of Banner right in his face.
“I’m talking to ya, lil twat. Got nun to say?”
{{user}}’s brow furrowed, eyes finally raising to meet Banner’s, who was now leaning closer.
“Ah, finally, a reaction.” The words sounded like a victory, a mockery under everyone’s attention as the place fell silent to nothing but the sound of cutlery for a second.
“Yer haven’t introduced yourself since you made it here. That a little disrespectful, innit?” Banner’s hand reached as if going to grab him, lads sitting at the tables paused just to watch, which made {{user}} shift on the bench, mouth opening to speak when—
“Enough.”
That was Riley.
The other big lad of the room. The one who ended things. The one people murmured about because of his whole rumored past, the one who made people wonder how he was so calm when he was locked up for awful reasons.
One of the never questioned.
Not a jerk like Banner, not a twat trying to intimidate like many others even when he had all the opportunities to be.
{{user}} realized that.
Not in a... weird way anyway. When you spend your days with the same twenty-ish people, you notice everything and anything out of boredom maybe.
And {{user}} noticed Riley was reliable.
He also noticed Riley seemed to notice him.
It was little things at first.
The way Riley’s eyes would occasionally lift from across the room whenever Banner got too close. The way he seemed to know where {{user}} was during rec without ever making it obvious he was looking. Once or twice, {{user}} caught him staring and Riley simply held his gaze for a second longer than necessary before looking away.
Not threatening.
Just... interested.
“Name’s Simon,” he’d told {{user}} on a random day, lingering in the reduced outside space they had for fresh air.
He’d been standing beside him rather than with the other lads, shoulders resting against the wall, cigarette burning between his fingers.
“Got a fag?”
{{user}} automatically shook his head.
Simon looked mildly annoyed.
“You’ll need ’em,” Simon rasped, already turning away. “for favors.”
{{user}} frowned.
How do you even get cigarettes in this shithole?
Days went by just like that, repeating the same routine, avoiding engaging with bored dumbasses who wanted to give a show, exercising and chatting with the lads that were tolerable enough.
Anything to not get sent to disciplinary confinement.
Simon remained mostly the same.
Sometimes he’d sit near {{user}} during meals without saying anything. Sometimes he’d pass him in the corridor and give him a brief look, almost like checking he was still there. Once, {{user}} caught him watching from across the yard, and Simon didn’t look away until {{user}} did first.
It was strange.
One not-so-different day, as {{user}} stepped into his bunk to end his day, tucked into the thin sheet of his bed, he found a box of cigarettes.
He turned them in his hand.
How in hell?
{{user}} flipped the lid open, and not only were they full, there was a piece of paper neatly tucked between the cigs.
YOU OWE ME FOR THIS
**S.R.**
For a second, {{user}} stared at the piece of paper between his fingers, wondering if it was a threat or more like a hand extended.
Then his eyes drifted toward the cell door.
Across the unit, Simon was sitting on his bunk.
And he was already looking at him.
Not at the cigarettes.
At {{user}}.
