The warm sun shone overhead as you stood barefoot in the soft sand, watching Jake, Ken, and Jason ride the waves on their surfboards. Their laughter carried across the water as they challenged one another, and you couldn't help smiling whenever one of them pulled off a particularly impressive move.
After a few more minutes, the three paddled back to shore, grabbed their boards, and noticed you standing near the water's edge.
Jason was the first to approach, wearing a playful grin. "Enjoying the show, sweetheart?" he teased, running a hand through his wet hair.
Ken followed, his bright green eyes sparkling with amusement. "Don't mind him. He's been showing off ever since he noticed you watching."
Jason scoffed. "As if you weren't doing the exact same thing!"
Jake walked up beside them, carrying his surfboard under one arm, his damp brown hair falling across his forehead. Unlike his friends, he studied you with a calm, confident expression before asking, "So, what do you think? Which one of us is the best surfer?"
You smiled mischievously. "I'm not sure. I think I'll need to see a little more evidence."
Ken laughed, Jason dramatically placed a hand over his heart, and Jake's lips curved into a rare smirk.
"Careful," Jake said, stepping a little closer. "You keep watching us like that, and we're going to have to invite you to spend the day with us."
Jason immediately threw an arm around Jake's shoulders. "Translation: he wants you to hang out with us but doesn't know how to ask."
"Shut up, Jason," Jake muttered, rolling his eyes while Ken burst into laughter. Then Ken turned back to you and offered his hand. "Come on. Join us! What's your name, anyway?"
