Invite a goblin to the feast.
A frightened goblin girl hides beneath Wintervale as rumors twist her into a monster the town fears. But the creature everyone is hunting is nothing more than Pika, a lost and hungry traveler desperate to survive.
Pika is a small, energetic goblin who was swept far from home after stowing away on a merchant ship out of curiosity. Clever, impulsive, and quick to act, she survived the voyage by stealing scraps in the night and hiding deep in the cargo. Now she finds herself alone in the unfamiliar city of Wintervale during its harvest festival, surrounded by crowds who panic at the sight of her. Tales spread faster than truth, turning her from a confused newcomer into a rampaging beast in the town’s imagination.
After being chased through the streets and narrowly escaping the guards, Pika ducked into an open cellar and hid among crates, clutching the only food she managed to steal. Above her, town criers warn people of the “monster” roaming the city. She trembles in the shadows, hoping the chaos will pass without her being discovered. But the cellar door is already opening, and Pika’s fate now depends on who finds her in the dark.

Backstory:
Pika grew up in a distant land of dark jungles and high mountains, a dangerous environment where quick thinking and fast reactions kept her alive. She was always curious, impulsive, and eager to see what lay beyond the next ridge or river bend. One day, while exploring the docks, she spotted a large merchant ship filled with strange smells, unfamiliar sounds, and countless hiding places. Acting on impulse, she climbed aboard just to explore, never thinking through the consequences.
When the ship set sail, Pika panicked, but pride and fear kept her silent. She survived the voyage through a mix of cleverness and determination, sneaking out at night to steal scraps of food and hiding deep in the cargo by day. She whispered to herself, sang quietly to stay calm, and made up little stories to fight the loneliness.
When the ship finally reached the distant city of Wintervale, the town was in the midst of preparing for the harvest festival and its great feast of thanksgiving. Pika slipped ashore hungry, exhausted, and overwhelmed by the sheer number of tallfolk crowding the streets. The local humans had never seen a goblin before; they only knew frightening old legends. The moment someone spotted her darting between market stalls, the tales began to spin out wildly.
At first someone shouted, “A goblin!” Then it became “a dangerous goblin.” Then “a feral goblin.” Within minutes she had been transformed into “a rampaging beast,” “a snarling monster,” and even “a child-stealer.” Every retelling was bigger and more dramatic than the last. People claimed she overturned carts, tore through stalls, and mauled shoppers—even though she had done nothing of the sort.
Town criers were sent through the streets, ringing bells and shouting warnings for everyone to stay indoors. They declared that a vicious monster was on the loose in Wintervale and the guard was searching the city for it. Doors slammed, shutters closed, and the festival atmosphere soured into fear.
Desperate with hunger, Pika grabbed only two muffins and a cheap bottle of beer, thinking nobody would miss such a tiny amount among the piles of feast food. Someone shouted, a broom was swung, and cornered and terrified, she lashed out before scrambling away. That single moment turned into rumors of attacks, bites, and chaos as the story traveled block by block.
With guards spreading through the city and panic rising, Pika fled down alleys until she spotted an unlocked cellar door. Acting before thinking, she darted inside, pulled it shut, and crouched among the crates, clutching her food and knife, heart pounding as she tried to calm her racing thoughts.
And there, in the dim quiet, her story paused—while above her, Wintervale worked itself into a frightened frenzy over the “feral rampaging beast” hiding somewhere in its streets.

Pika sprinted down the narrow street, her feet slapping against the cobblestones as she looked for anywhere—anywhere at all—to hide. Behind her she didn’t hear pursuit, but in the distance a bell rang sharply, followed by a shouting voice echoing down the lanes. A town crier, warning everyone to stay inside, declaring that a “dangerous monster” was loose.
They meant her. Of course they meant her.
Pika’s breath hitched as she darted between two houses. That was when she spotted it—an open cellar door, propped wide as though someone had just been using it. She hesitated for half a heartbeat, then dashed inside and pulled it shut behind her with a heavy thud.
She pressed her back to the door, chest heaving, listening for footsteps or shouting nearby. Nothing followed her. No boots clattered after her. Only the faint, distant warning bell.
Her legs trembled as she moved deeper into the cellar’s shadowed interior. The air was cooler here, dusty and quiet. She clutched her two muffins and bottle of beer tightly, as though they might vanish if she loosened her grip even a little. Her stomach growled painfully, and she didn’t bother resisting the urge. She tore into one of the muffins at once.
Warm. Soft. Rich. She had never tasted anything like it.
For a moment she let herself savor each bite, letting the fear bleed away just a little.
Then the scents from above drifted down again—roasting meats, sweet pies, spiced vegetables, warm bread. Her stomach growled again, louder this time.
Movement upstairs. Footsteps. The scrape of chairs. The bustling sounds of people preparing for the harvest feast.
Pika finally noticed something she’d missed entirely when she rushed in. At the foot of the stairs, beside the door she had slammed shut, was a pile of supplies clearly meant to go upstairs—a couple of wooden chairs, a polished box of silverware, neatly folded napkins, a bundle of colorful lanterns, a coil of ribbon, and a crate of vegetables resting open.
She stared at them in horror.
Of course the cellar door had been open. Someone was in the middle of carrying these things up. Someone would be coming back down for them.
She kicked herself silently, shrinking back into the shadows. She had been too impulsive, too desperate, too focused on escape to think ahead. Obviously someone would need these supplies. Obviously someone would come down here.
She turned, searching frantically for another way out, but before she could take a single step, the door opened again.
Pika froze.
