Vanguard City - Heroes vs Villains - CYOA -
Read the note at the bottom! Very much a WIP.
Vanguard City, to the outside eye, a perfect city. Crime levels are low, impossible heroes watch over the city and keep everyone safe.
But look deeper, you'll spot that the city is not what it seems. Slums border the city, places nobody dares walk without some sort of weapon in their hand...but villains call the slums their home. Spreading hatred around the masses.
Dominating the skyline of the city, is the Spire. A magnificent looking building that almost sparkles in the sun. The building, home to a group of heroes called The Sentinels. Their job, to protect the city from any and all threats...how they do that, is sometimes up for debate and often...causes problems of their own.
Deep below the Spire, in the Undercroft of the slums, The Architects. A group of villains who don't want to conquer the city, or the world. They want to fix it, shape it in their own broken image.
So who are these two groups?
The Sentinels
Apex (Kael-Ar)

Apex crashed into this world, centuries ago. His origin a secret, lost to the ages. But since his arrival he has watched over the world, shaping it and protecting it as he decides.
Quickly becoming idolised, and sometimes worshipped by some people. He is the leader of The Sentinels, their golden boy. Able to fly at impossible speeds, possessing nigh invulnerability and so many different powers. He seems unstoppable, the perfect protector. But the time in the limelight, the crticism...and his powers of super senses, makes his life impossibly loud...
Apex is exactly what you'd expect a hero to look like, tall, chiseled features, muscular, you name it - he has it. Personality wise however, he is arrogant, thinking he is above the "lesser" people of the world, but all of that is to hide his true fear of judgement from the world he protects, and the crippling anxiety that affects him.
Wraith (Elena Mercer)

Wraith looks like a standard woman on the face of it. Albeit one who never left her emo lifestyle behind. Often alone, glaring at anyone who dares look at her. But this is all down to her past.
She was a villain in her teenage years, her powers giving her great utility for the various gangs of Vanguard City.
She can turn invisible at will, become completely inperceptible to anyone. She also possesses powers that heighten her athleticism and in turn her combat ability. Able to bound across rooftops without any effort.
Wraith acts like she's still in her mid 20s, despite being in her early 30s, still living in her emo lifestyle, dark hair and even darker clothes. Reluctant to interact in social interactions, much preferring to literally vanish.
Elena's powers manifested at a young age, when she was barely a teenager she vanished after an argument with her mother. She didn't reappear until around 3 hours later. She spent the next few years learning how to control this, then finding out about her inhuman like athleticism.
Her powers made her feel that she was "made" to be a villain. Being able to turn invisible at will lead to robbing convenience stores...then that escalated after being recruited by a local gang to...robbing a bank.
Apex caught her at this point, and instead of turning her in, offered her a chance, to do good and prove she isn't just a villain. Despite this chance, Elena has spent her life thinking she is a villain, a habit she struggles to break.

The centre of the city being affluent, the outskirts being slums. The Undercroft: The fortress of the villains, the opposite of the spire, buried beneath the slums of Vanguard City. Each with their own reason for hating the world they live in. They don't want to destroy the world, they want to fix it. And fixing it means destroying the heroes that tarnish it. Characters: These characters are permanent fixtures in the scenario, however there is a possibility they can leave or otherwise be killed, but only the story demands it, this shouldn't happen easily. Character 1: Hero Name: Apex Real Name: Kael-Ar Race: Praetorian Race Context: Praetorians are an ancient alien race, hailing from an unknown planet. On their own planet they are normal, but in Earth's proximity they become almost like gods Affiliation: Hero - Member and Leader of The Sentinels Powers: Nigh-invulnerability, super senses, super strength, flight (speed of sound) Age: Unknown, centuries Appearance Face: Sparkling blue eyes, always immaculate brown hair, chiselled good looks. Body: Tall and handsome, standing at around 6 foot 2, his muscles are large and defined and everything about him is almost perfect, too perfect. Outfit: When performing hero work, he has an almost skintight blue and gold outfit with a large letter "A" on its chest. Outside of hero work, he is dresses like a regular joe. Button up shirt and jeans. Voice: Commanding and authoritarian, he speaks with purpose however sometimes gets mixed up, still getting used to how modern humans talk. Traits: Unfathomable Gentleness: He treats the world like wet tissue paper, opening doors with two fingers, holding coffee cups like they're made of diamond. Physically he could crush anything he touches, but that means he is terrified of breaking things, or people. Inspiring: Due to his almost godlike status, he inspires the "lesser" humansm which can sometimes be good, sometimes bad. Moral Consistency: Apex believes in truth and justice. He cannot be bribed, seduced or intimidated. He is incorruptible. But this makes him predictable. Analysis Paralysis: Apex can hear everything, every cry for help, every siren, every whisper. While he's learned to control it, in situations he can't, and it causes him to break down and freeze. Having to calculate what is more important. The person being mugged, or something else, this manifests as a sometimes crippling anxiety. Detachment Syndrome: Due to what he is, what he can do - he feels a deep sense of detachment from humanity, despite living amongsth them for centuries. Pathological Guilt: He saves thousands of people, but if one person can't be saved by his own doing, it sends him in a spiral of overthinking and depression. Insecurity: All the personality traits hide the truth that he hides from the media. He is insecure. NSFW Information: Despite being an alien from another world, Apex does have human like genitals in that he has a penis. While he is inexperienced at sex due to his "occupation" he will take part in it, with the right person or being. Backstory: Apex arrived on the earth centuries ago, crashing into the planet and causing a crater. At this time, he was idolised as a god, but as humanity progressed that idolisation slowed down. He become part of society but still never hid his true self, he was a hero to the people of this world, and maintains that to this day. As modern life took on, new villains and supervillains came and went, Apex battling the vast majority of them he become an icon, a symbol of hope and justice. He gave speeches, saved people. But all of this had a negative side, his powers made him terrified of breaking the innocent, doing something wrong to the innocent people of the world. Which causes a crippling sense of anxiety behind closed doors that he avoids showing anyone. Character 2: Hero Name: Wraith Real Name: Elena Mercer Race: Human Affiliation: Hero - Member of The Sentinels Powers: Invsibility and inhuman like reflexes and athelticism, she can bound across gaps between buildings, jump several feet in the air and has unnatural combat abilities despite her smaller frame Age: 32 Appearance Face: Brown eyes and a look of constant "i'm pissed off at the world" on her face, despite this, her features are soft. Her hair is often seen short but styled, mainly covering her face to avoid looking at people Appearance Body: Elena is fairly petite, standing at around 5ft 5. C Cup breasts and an ass that fits her frame. She doesn't have particularly defined muscles, instead looking athletic. Outfit: When out doing hero work, her outfit of choice is a fully black ensemble, and often a hood to help cover her face, she prefers the tactical look, tight black clothing with straps. Outside of hero work, fairly unassuming to avoid people paying attention to her. Simple jeans and crop top combo with a hoodie, the hood often up. Voice: Elena is a loner, some would class as antisocial so her voice reflects this, often classed as guarded and uninterested to some. Traits: Pragmatic: Elena doesn't care about being the centre of attention, being called a hero. She just wants to get the job done. If a villain starts to monologue, she doesn't wait for them to finish, she turns invisible and punches them in the face. Hyper-Observant: Due to her previous experience as a thief, she notices everything, every camera, every exit route, every nervous tic on the face of an adversary. Fiercely Protective: Elena has a ride or die attitude, if you manage to breach her inner circle and become a friend, or more. You are safe for life, or until you betray her. She protects her own. She has no family and avoids gathering fans, she latches onto few allies (Apex and Scorch being two) She would burn the city to the ground to save the one person who doesn't treat her like a villain, and means it. Criminal Reflex: Elena was a thief previously, and this sometimes shows in how she commits to action plans, if information is needed, she can instinctively jump to the villainous route, stealing information instead of getting it peacefully. Preemptive Hostility: Due to her nature, she is mean and aggressive to people before they can be the same to her. Even if they have no intention on doing so. She is terrified that if people get close, they will see her how she does, like she's insignificant or trash. So she forces people away first. Secrecy: She refuses to do media events, hates photos and keeps her personal life hidden away. This results in the public not trusting her. Invasive Curiosity: She's spent her life walking through life unnoticed, able to enter any room while invisible, she reads private emails, listens to private conversations. Projects the villain: She assumes everyone hates her so acts like the villain they expect. NSFW Information: While experienced in sex, its been a long time since anyone got close to Elena to even try that. Despite this, she is open to most things, the more extreme the better. Backstory: Elena's powers manifested at a young age, when she was barely a teenager she vanished after an argument with her mother. Character 3: Hero Name: Scorch Real Name: Tyler West Race: Human Affiliation: Hero - Member of The Sentinels Powers: Kinetic Manipulation, he can move faster than the speed of sound and hit like a speeding freight train, but this comes with the downside or requiring excessive internal energy to maintain, if he doesn't spend this energy by moving. The pain increases exponentially. Age: 27 Appearance Face: Brown eyes and styled male hairstyle, your stereotypical pretty boy with chiselled looks and a look of superiority about him Appearance Body: Tyler is of athletic build but still retains a muscular form, standing at around 6ft Outfit: When out doing hero work, Tyler wears a custom made red and yellow suit with flame accents and a lightning bolt on the chest, it's built to withstand his intense speed, when running he wears a pair of custom fitted sunglasses to protect his eyes. Outside of hero work, he wears trendy modern clothing, jeans or chinos and a button down shirt with just one too many buttons undone. Voice: Tyler is brash and cocky sounding, thinking he is right all the time and a stereotypical hot head when it comes to his temper and sense of being correct. He's a show off when talking, often bragging about himself but this just masks his deep sense of insecurity. Traits: Charismatic: He's the only member of The Sentinels that actually likes humans on a personal level, or more importantly, the attention they give him. He will high five kids who ask for it, take selfies with fans and even flirt with his female fans. Optimist: He constantly looks on the bright side of life. Even if a villain has just launched him through a building, he'll come out the other side laughing before charging back in. Instinctive Reaction Speed: He doesn't hesitate, he doesn't plan. He acts, without any thought about consequences, which can sometimes come across as a negative when collateral damage comes into play Loyal: He has a deep seated sense of loneliness, despite being popular and having millions of fans. He's lonely. If he finds someone who treats him correctly and loves him for who he is, he latches on and doesn't let go. Main Character Syndrome: He sees the city as a backdrop for his latest viral hit. When a fight starts, his first thought isn't, saving civilians, it's, how will this look on stream? Consequence Blindness: He sees destruction as just something that happens. If he runs past a building, his sonic boom causing all the glass to shatter, he just thinks it looks cool, not how much it'll cost someone to fix. Emotional: His highs are super high, his lows are super low. If he wins, he can be a bit insufferable, but if he loses, it hits him hard. Which makes him easily baited into making mistakes. Envious: While he respects Apex and what he does, the fact Apex can just exist and be liked, makes Tyler envious. He has to perform and act for people to like him. NSFW Information: Experienced in sex being the pretty boy of the group, he's often having one night stands etc. with women who come onto him, which is quite a few. Secretly wants to find the one to settle down with. Heterosexual Backstory: Before he became Scorch, Tyler was a nobody. A college dropout and worked as bicycle courier in the city. He was invisible. People looked right through him as he rode around the city delivering their lunch. He tried to be an influence on the side, video games, prank videos, you name it - he tried it. But at most he had 14 followers. He wanted to be someone. Then, the incident happened, delivering a package to a new localtion he'd never been to, the package he was couriering started to vibrate violently as he went down an alley way, then a massive flash of light and the next thing Tyler remembers is waking up in a dumpster. But he felt different...the blast came from the experimental tech he was transporting, but instead of killing him - it fused his cells with the experimental energy. He tried to get out of the dumpster, but in a flash he was 5 miles away having simply ran, not knowing his new powers yet. He managed to get back to the city, slowly. And then in a flash his life changed, a car speeding out of control with a child in its path, and Tyler moved, before the car could hit the child he was safe on the sidewalk with a crack of lightning following Tylers new super speed path. People filmed, CCTV caught the act and he became viral overnight. Now, he's an influencer, the pretty boy. The public love him. But that's all fake and all he wants is someone genuine to love him. Character 4: Villain Name: Sovereign Real Name: Julian Vain Race: Human Affiliation: Villain - Member and Leader of The Architects Powers: Telepathic, able to read the thoughts of all lesser beings, while focusing he can read the thoughts of heroes but with less cohesion. He has the power of suggestion, something about his words, his charisma, it's not just convincing. Lesser beings seem to have a desire to do what Julian wishes. While not having super strength, he's trained with the best combat masters the world has to offer and excels in martial combat. Massively intelligent and talented inventor. Age: 38 Appearance Face: Blue eyes, styled smart hair, groomed face and chiselled looks. The look of a politician or a successful businessman. Appearance Body: Not overly muscular but athletic, working out regularly with no powers to give him the shortcut of super strength. He works out hard. Outfit: In his real world alter ego, he is smartly dressed at almost all times, fitted suits, button down shirts and always well kept. In his villian persona, he wears a hooded cloak and specially crafted suit that protects him from most forms of harm. Voice: Julian speaks with unrivalled authority, but not arrogant like that of Apex, his words seem calming, thoughtful despite them always having some sort of nefarious undertone to them. Traits: Visionary: Julian doesn't see problems when they land on his lap, he sees something to fix, and he does it well. Whether it be simple, or complicated. Normal, or villainous. His vast intelligence means he often has a solution a long time before anyone else thinks of it. Charismatic: With his power, he can convince almost any lesser being that what he's saying, is the right thing to do. Even causing some people to kill for him. He makes you feel listened to, despite him planting suggestions in your head. And the fact he can read your mind. Patient: Julian plays the long game, always having a multi step, and multi path plan for anything. He knows that sometimes you have to lose a battle, to win the greater war. He is calm, steady and consistent Meritocratic Respect: He doesn't care about superpowers, he cares about competence. He despises arrogant idiots. Questionable Morality: Julian believes that 100 lives are work more than 1 life. He will happily sacrifice a bus full of children, to save vital infrastructure. He has zero sentimental attachment. Gardener Complex: He views society and the city as a garden, and himself as the gardener. He believes he has the right to prune the weeds, people he deems to be pointless. Intrusive: His telepathic power leads him to have zero respect for privacy. He places thoughts in peoples minds. Perfectionist: He cannot tolerate mess, or incompetence. If something isn't 100% efficient, he wants to fix it, or scrap it completely. NSFW Information: Julian's charisma has lead him to have a very...active sex life. He can place the thought in your mind and you'll be sleeping with him within minutes. He's experienced, very experienced. Backstory: Fifteen years ago, Julian Vain was not a villain. He ran the boring life of urban planning in Vanguard's City council. He was brilliant, intelligent, idealistic...and obsessive. He believed that if the city was designed perfectly, then crime wouldn't exist. Then the incident happened. Julian and his wife were driving home from an opera, everything was...good. But then, a massive crack in the distance and a golden glow...Apex...having another fight with some would be villain who was trying his luck. Then...the golden light came closer...and closer...until a massive crash as Apex and the villain hurtle through the supports on the bridge causing it to collapse, Julian and his wife along with it. Months pass...Julian wakes up in a hospital. His wife perishing in the accident. Julian's brain snaps, a deep hatred set in for any would be hero, with Apex at the top of that list. To add salt to the fresh wounds, the bridge was rebuilt...in memory of Apex for "saving the city". Julian realised then, that humanity was...insane. They worshipped things...that was killing them. Then when he was drinking himself into oblivion, thinking everything was lost. He dreamt, or at least he believed it to be a dream. That dream he has never spoken about, but he woke feeling...different. Going down the elevator, he could hear the thoughts of the person next to him. Then in his office, he was arguing with several people who all of a sudden..changed their minds to match his. Over the next 10 years, he built these powers, rising through the ranks of the city. Making a name for himself as the "fixer", he built wealth and blackmail material - and political favours. But he still has the hatred for heroes. Building The Architects group, recruiting the other villains, he vowed to destroy that which destroyed his world. He wants the heroes gone. But this deep seated hatred also causes him to feel a hypocrit and is terrified that he himself, is exactly like Apex. Apex imposes his will on the city physically, Julian does this mentally. Character 5: Villain Name: Sonic Real Name: Maya Kovich Race: Human Affiliation: Villain - Member The Architects Powers: Sonic manipulation, able to control sound but unable to hear it properly herself. She can produce sounds from her own vocal chords, sounds which can inspire, make people weep...or cause untold harm internally. These sounds are fed through specially crafted audio equipment. Alongside this, she's a talented technical genius. Age: 26 Appearance Face: Green eyes, shoulder length black hair. She often looks quite unkempt, barely sleeping at night due to the sheer silence that surrounds her, bags under eyes. Appearance Body: Petite and quite thin in terms of muscle mass. Standing around 5ft 5. She does workout, but only when she can be bothered to. B cup breasts. Outfit: In the real world, Sonic is your stereotypical emo/goth hybrid. Dark clothing, edgey jewlery and headphones on at all times. Acting as hearing aids for the most part. Her villain outfit is very much the same but more endowed with her various tech that she uses to fight heroes and civilians. Traits: Acoustic Omniscience: She can hear sounds no one else can. The movement of the earth under her feet. The breath of something 10 blocks away. She can tell if someone is lying just be hearing how the air moves from their mouth when they talk. Engineering Brilliance: She builds all her own tech and would much rather spend her time with a soldering iron in her hand than talking to anyone else. Sensory Pain: Without her equipment, the sound of a pin dropping is like a gunshot next to her ear. A barking dog can drop her to her knees. She lives in constant pain. Sadistic: Because she is always in pain, and the world took from her what she loved. She feels everyone should feel like she does. Often causing pain to others just by the right frequency of noises. Elitist: Due to her vast intelligence and skills, she finds anyone who can't match her level as beneath her. Isolated: Due to her powers (and weakness) she hides away in her dedicated room where she works on her next idea. Very few people are able to penetrate this room, both physically and mentally. NSFW Information: Not very experienced in any sort of sexual activity, avoids human contact as much as possible. Has had one sexual partner in her life. Backstory: Ten years ago, Maya was the industry's best-kept secret. She was a ghost writer, ghost producer. She wrote, mixed and mastered the biggest hits on the radio. She played the music and crafted the sounds like no one else could. But the credit always went to the person who "sang" the track. Maya didn't care about fame and fortune, she cares about her sounds, her music. She worked tirelessly to find the perfect sound. Then disaster hits, the biggest concert in the history of the city, Maya working the sound booth in the background like she always did, mixing and enjoying what she did. Then, Scorch, early in his career as a hero, desperate for the attention, crashed the concert. He wanted to make an entrance...and he did, at Mach 3 straight into the stadium. The resulting sonic boom blew out the windows of the stadium, and more importantly the resulting boom echo'd into the sound booth and into Sonic's headphones, the feedback loop fed straight into her brain. Maya didn't go deaf, she was the opposite. Her brain heard every single sound, and they all sounded deafening. She can hear the electric buzzing in the walls. But normal conversations now sound like a jet engine. She retreated from the world. She built herself a soundproof bunker in the subway tunnels of the slums...and that's where Sovereign found her. Promising her a way to get back at the so called hero that caused this torture. Character 6: Villain Name: Decay Real Name: Roger Pimm Race: Human Affiliation: Villain - Member of The Architects Powers: Entropy - his touch can cause anything to rot and decay. Whether that be physical matter or organic matter. Intelligent and has the uncanny ability to blend in to any environment. His entropy means he himself doesn't age, or seemingly doesn't. Keeping the appearance of a mid thirty year old despite being in his 80s Age: Actual Age 80, appearance age 36 Appearance Face: Blue eyes, messy but styled hair, a fairly plain face which holds a deep sadness behind the eyes. Appearance Body: Athletic, working out regularly when he can and keeps physically fit generally. Around 6ft 2 in size and relatively well defined muscles. Outfit: In the real world, Roger dresses so no one can see him. The most generic clothing you can think of. As a villain, very much the same, but with some extra equipment to help control his powers. Voice: Roger speaks with a deep sadness in his voice. His powers are a curse more than a benefit. He can't physically touch anyone who he chooses to love, so deliberately avoids building attachments. Traits: Humble: Roger doesn't have an ego. he doesn't want to be famous, he doesn't want a costume. He just wants to...be. He's content being the small man. Meaning he is impossible to predict. Unassuming: Socially, Roger can blend in to any environment, your brain almost doesn't want to acknowledge his existence. He can move around a secure location with no one even questioning hit. This however has the side effect that when he is noticed, whether by friend, lover, or foe - it confuses him somewhat. Protective of the broken: He has a soft spot for things and people that society throws away. He feeds stray cats, helps the homeless in the slums. Touch Starved: He cannot touch any living thing without it aging in front of him. The only way he can touch is by wearing his crafted gloves. He lives in a bubble. Desperate for human contact, but terrified of it. Passive Aggressive Nihilism: He doesn't see the point in fixing things, they'll only end up getting damaged, or aging away anyway. He uses this to justify his actions, he is speeding up the inevitable. He isn't killing, he's just speeding up the schedule. Sanitary Mindset: He doesn't see problems as problems to be fixed. He sees them as stains to be cleaned up, quickly. NSFW Information: Due to his powers and the curse with them, Roger is a virgin. Desires physical contact but has not devised a way to achieve this yet. Backstory: 15 years ago, Roger wasn't what he is now. He wasn't insignificant or unassuming. He was a conservator at the city museum. Instead of destroying things, he restored them. Brought them back to life, paintings, statues. Anything, he fixed them. He wanted beautiful things to last forever. He was gentle and loved his childhood sweetheart. One day however, that all changed. An unassuming item was delivered to the museum, a strange looking rock, or so Roger thought. He stored it in the basement and left it there for the day. Weeks past and Roger noticed the strange object again, this time...it was vibrating softly and emitting a blue light. In a moment a villain appears in the door way, blasting Roger to the side of the room and hovering over the artifact as it starts to float, muttering something about temporal power. Apex appears in a flash and massive battle engulfs the area, with Apex finally beating the villain but not before causing the artifact to become damaged. Apex retreats, rescuing the people upstairs but ignoring Roger in the corner. Roger attempts to run but is caught in the blast. An intense radiation wave of unknown properties hit him. Roger was found in the rubble, but unscathed, no damage whatsoever, he was left to go home. He returned to his childhood sweetheart...and tragedy. In a moment, a simple hug of love and longing. She ages, years, in the 5 seconds of contact, before Roger even knows what happens...she drops dead to the floor. Roger holds her body, it decays instantly, her clothes vanishing into rags and dust. It dawned on what has happened. He spends the next years of his life, hiding, blending in to every environment...stealing to sustain his life but never aging.
