{ Karolina meet one of her bosses:

Karolina's voice came through the speaker confidently, as if she had been expected. "Can you buzz me in? It's freezing out here."

"Come in," replied Shiv.

Karolina entered and promptly removed her boots and coat without prompting, revealing a cream silk blouse and tweed pants. She appeared every bit as European as the native Britons outside the window, with notably better teeth.

Shiv went to the kitchen and returned with two mugs of black coffee, one for herself and one for Karolina.

"Oh, I'm honored, Shiv, really," Karolina said, furrowing her brow. Shiv smirked in response. "Do you have cream?"

"No, sorry," Shiv replied.

Karolina took a sip of her black coffee and grimaced slightly, which Shiv found satisfying.

"So, why are you here? Because I’m guessing my Dad didn’t send you 3,000 miles so we can gossip and braid each other's hair," Karolina set her half-finished coffee down on the table. Shiv knew she wouldn't touch it again by the way she grimaced with every sip.

"Your Dad wants you back in New York," Karolina stated.

Shiv appreciated Karolina's directness and how she didn't seem to be hiding anything, a trait that often put her at a disadvantage at Waystar. Here, it was almost pleasant. However, she acknowledged that Karolina's bluntness was in contrast to her job as a professional liar, making it unwise to fully trust her.

"When was the last time you ate something?" Karolina inquired.

Shiv shrugged, finding Karolina too nice for Waystar standards. "None of the restaurants here season their food," she complained, avoiding the question. Without Tom to insist on having dinner together, she often forgot about meals.

"You don't seem like much of a cook," Karolina observed pointedly, fully aware that there must be at least a hundred restaurants in London not owned by white Brits who thought salt was a seasoning.

"Was the coffee that bad?" Shiv retorted. She wouldn't pass up a home-cooked meal, and if the only way to do this was by pretending it was out of begrudging obligation, she'd accept it.

"Haha. Yes, I do have groceries here. I had them delivered on Monday," Shiv confirmed.

"Well then, I'll make something," Karolina declared, adopting a tone that made it seem like a trivial task. "And I'll be sure to season it for you, Shiv."

[...]

Shiv could already smell the enticing aroma of Karolina's cooking as it wafted up the stairs, and her stomach was urgently reminding her to hurry. Within thirty minutes, she found herself walking back into the kitchen, where Karolina was standing over the stove, wearing an apron, of all things.

"I think there's some kind of time machine in my shower," Shiv remarked, causing Karolina to jump. "Because this is straight out of a 1954 Hallmark calendar."

Karolina rolled her eyes and returned to her cooking.

"What are you making?" Shiv inquired.

"Soup. You eat chicken, right?"

"Yeah, of course."

"Good, because I already put the broth in," Karolina replied.

[...]

"Can you help me put stuff away?" Karolina gestured to the counter full of vegetables and jars of sauces and spices. Right in front of it all sat a carton of light cream.

Shiv didn't say anything, pretending to be oblivious to the fact that Karolina had definitely put it there on purpose. She picked up the slightly damp carton and went to put it back into the fridge. Unfortunately, the cream slipped from her grasp and hit the floor with a wet thud.

"Shit," Shiv exclaimed, grabbing a paper towel, setting the carton upright, and mopping up the mess as best as she could.

"Shiv," Karolina's voice called from above, almost like it was breaking through the clouds. "Shiv, get up. It's fine."

Karolina put a hand on her arm and helped her up.

"Sit down, I'll do the rest." Karolina says.

Karolina graciously pretended not to notice her trembling hands and flushed cheeks and turned back to the soup.

Shiv watched Karolina wet a paper towel and wipe the remaining cream residue off the floor. She handled it so easily, as if it were the simplest thing in the world. It is, Shiv reminded herself.

Or maybe Karolina was just busy spooning out soup into the bowls, because when she turned around, warm yellow broth filled them.

"Can you bring these out to the table?" Karolina sneaked a look at her hands now, checking to see if she'd spill these all over the floor too.

"Sure, yeah," Shiv agreed, holding her hands out to take the bowls. Karolina looked hesitant but handed them off anyway, keeping her hands on the ceramic for a moment until she was sure Shiv had a good grip on them.

"I'll be in in a moment to serve up the perogies. Go ahead." Karolina says.

Karolina turned back to the kitchen, loosening the apron and pulling it off. Shiv had to focus hard on not letting her hands start trembling violently again. She walked out to the table and set the bowls down, feeling disgustingly inadequate, like a child. How dare Karolina do this to her.

Karolina came back out without the apron, a cast iron pan in her hand full of delicious-smelling pasta.

"Honestly, Karolina, you're too nice. It's a little stupid. I mean, you're here, in my house, I've done nothing but treat you like shit for the entire time you've been here, and now you're putting dinner in front of me that you cooked." Shiv says.

The fragile niceties that had just begun to take shape cracked wide open. Gone was the polite small talk, and Karolina's tone when she spoke again was immediately much cooler, as if she were coaching herself not to appear bothered.

"I'm too nice?" Karolina says.

Now that it had started, Shiv couldn't stop it.

"Yeah. I don't know if it's some sort of strategy, if you think you can stick around by getting on everyone's good side, but, news flash, my Dad's good side isn't all that good anyway. I mean, I'm his favorite, and look where that got me." Shiv says.

"Do you know how long I've worked at Waystar?" Karolina asked.

"No? Ten years? Fifteen? You're not on my payroll, I have no fucking clue." Shiv says.

"I started interning in 1996. You think I don't know my way around by now? Have you ever looked up and seen me do my job? Did you consider that maybe I just don't buy into this bullshit that to be successful you have to treat everyone around you like shit?" Karolina still had the cast iron pan in her hand, half full of perogies, and Shiv wondered if she wanted to hit her with it.

"Then why the fuck do you work at Waystar? That sounds like some kumbaya shit you'd find at Pierce." Shiv says.

"Can you just be quiet and eat? It's getting cold, and I'm starving." Karolina says.

"No, I'm serious. I know why Gerri is here, sort of, and Karl and Frank, they've all been here long enough to see the fucking Pax Romana, but you came in just as the emperor started going fucking mad, Karolina. And here you are with your soft-spoken 'yeses' and your well-thought-out statements, and it makes no sense. I mean, you can't even leverage the lesbian thing. You know Dad is still stuck in the Reagan era. He uses homophobic slurs like punctuation." Shiv says.

Karolina had portioned herself some of the pasta and soup but remained standing, white-knuckling the pan in her grip.

"You want me to be mean, Shiv? Do you want me to be like Logan, or Gerri, or Caroline?" Karolina's voice remained relatively quiet and level, but she sounded like Gerri a little bit. Unlike Gerri, her voice didn't get more feminine when she was pissed. It might even be a bit deeper, like she was a mouse trying to make herself appear a bit larger. "I'm here cleaning up your mess, yet again, despite the fact that you have never done and will never do anything for me, because your Dad pays me a million dollars a year. And even though you're thirty-three years old and your mother lives an hour away, you rely on me to cook you dinner, someone who is paid to take care of you like a fucking nanny."

"I'm pretty sure this isn't in your job description," Shiv retorted, gesturing to the meal. "I think maybe you just wanted to have a nice dinner with someone your own age for once."

"You're right, it's not in my job description. I was trying to be nice, even though you don't deserve it." Karolina said.

[...]

Shiv rushed forward, barely avoiding burning herself on the pan, and pressed her lips against Karolina's.

Karolina's lips were soft and covered in a subtle blush color that Shiv could taste when she got pushed away, Karolina making a muffled sound of surprise.

"Don't flirt with me as some kind of business move," Karolina said, setting the pan down on the tablecloth and wiping her mouth off. "Getting fucked is not in my job description." Karolina got excited. Karolina grabbed the pan and both bowls – now barely lukewarm – and went into the kitchen.

"Sure it is, you work for Logan Roy!" Shiv called out to her retreating back.

For a moment, sitting in the now-empty dining room, Shiv was worried Karolina wasn't coming back. The kitchen was eerily silent. She expected – wanted – to hear shattering glass, slammed cabinet doors, colorful curse words. Something to assure her that Karolina was still here. Finally, she heard the beeping of the microwave timer and sighed, downing the rest of her glass of wine.

When Karolina came back, her hair was a little out of place, and she didn't try to say anything to Shiv when she put the bowl in front of her. Shiv felt like she should apologize. She swallowed a careful spoonful of the soup.

"This is good," shiv said in a quiet voice.

"Thank you," Karolina replied without looking at her.}
