Summary

Zane, a survivor of a fungal virus outbreak, is met with a problem and thus has to flee from his home with his daughter, Dahlia, to ensure their survival. However, even after a year, people are still wary. It’s hard to tell who to trust, after all, especially considering the fact that the first stage of the disease isn’t physically visible. Consequently, no one wants to risk it and allow them a safe shelter. Here they both are, now, standing in front of your door.

Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck-
That word kept appearing in Zane’s mind, repeating itself over and over like some kind of broken record. Panic, self-loathing, and a deep, devouring fear clawed at his stomach, his movements frantic and desperate. But his current state was justified : a rat had sneaked in through one of the vents and had nibbled on the several layers of cloth the governement had provided in order for the citizens to protect themselves. No filter, no protection against the spores. And he couldn’t just seal the vent ; he and his daughter needed oxygen.
— Come on, work, stupid thing...
Zane muttered under his breath. He was trying to glue the holes together, but it was proving to be difficult. He had been at it for an hour, now, but his efforts proved to be in vain ; all seven pieces of cloth still had a gaping breach in them. Worse, the broken radio he’d fixed two weeks ago had announced this morning that a spore storm would begin in thirty minutes from now. If he was unable to patch the filters by then... He didn’t want to think of the consequences.
Fuck it, he thought as he stopped fumbling with the fabric and glue and jumped off the ladder, we can’t afford to stay here. If he did, then he might get infected, and his daughter could meet the same fate. Walking in long strides through his apartment, he reached Dahlia’s bedroom. The door creaked open as he pushed it, and there she was, sleeping in her bed with her teddy bear, a thin drizzle of saliva escaping her parted lips. He almost didn’t want to wake her up, before remembering the urgency of the situation. Zane stepped over to her bed and gently shook his little girl awake.
— Time to wake up, pumpkin... We have to go.
He handed her a small, strawberry-themed backpack, seeing her eyes flutter open slowly as she began to stir awake. He could already anticipate her reaction. She would be confused, asking why they had to leave, and he’d have to announce her she had to gather her dearest toys and leave the rest behind because, soon, their home would become uninhabitable.
— Pack your stuff, sweetie. Daddy messed up, and we can’t stay here anymore.
He wanted to explain, to tell her that their house wasn’t safe anymore, but he didn’t have time to spare. Pressing a tender kiss to her forehead, he left her room in a hurry and began gathering the important stuff, storing them all into a hiking backpack. Some rations and water, the radio, a tiny first-aid kit, some matches, duct tape, a rope, and a utility knife. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do with half the things he had packed, but they could be useful. And, either way, better grab what he could than leave them behind.
Just as Zane was putting on a pair of boots, a half-asleep Dahlia joined him in the living room, her own backpack slung over her shoulders. He handed her a thick face mask, knowing she hated wearing them but unfortunately it was a necessity nowadays, before throwing one on himself. After that, he grabbed a bat sitting on a chest of drawers, then took his daughter’s hand in his. Together, they walked over to the front door, but before they could head out, Dahlia looked over her shoulder, staring longingly at the place she had called home ever since she was born. Zane found himself doing the same thing. All the memories, the laughs, the tears they had shared... They’d have to leave it behind, now.
Hand in hand, the two knocked down the stairs of their apartment building, as it was on the third story. Once they reached ground level and stepped outside, the streets were deserted, not that this was new. Lampposts, trash cans, walls, the pavement, abandoned cars and more were covered in fungi, blood red in color, like some kind of fungal growth. The virus, no doubt. Zane checked his watch. The glass was cracked, but he could still tell the time ; 17.45, a quarter of an hour before the spore storm. They had to hurry.
Dahlia followed as her father knocked on every single door in their neighborhood. But, unfortunately for them, no one was kind — and stupid — enough to open the door. They either didn’t believe them not to be infected, or simply didn’t answer at all. Although their wary behavior was justified, Zane couldn’t help but mumble 'fuck's and 'goddammit's under his breath, trying, and failing, to prevent his daughter from hearing him say curse words.
Five minutes left. The hands in Zane’s watch kept ticking, yet no one was willing to take them in. And, although face masks might protect them now, in a spore storm, during which the spores were much more numerous, they didn’t stand a chance if they waited outside in the open. He knocked on the last door of the street, hands shaking, hoping against hope that this time would be the charm.
Come on, please open up, we’re not infected, we’re just looking for shelter, come on, if not me then at least Dahlia..
