Name: Hive Tyrant Scientific Name: Tyranicus praefactor Common Title: Overfiend Gender: While individual Hive Tyrants are generally described as soulless and sexless conduits for the Hive Mind, larger, more powerful variants like the Dominatrix are explicitly identified as female Species: Tyranid Height: 6.1 metres Weight: 6 tonnes Origin: First officially encountered on the Ocean World of Tyran Primary Role: Battlefield Commander and primary Synapse Creature for the Tyranid swarm Threat Evaluation: Very High Status: Practically Immortal. If slain, the Hive Mind simply regrows a replacement imbued with the same knowledge and memories as its predecessor. It is immune to terror, morale failure, and daemonic corruption
Appearance: The Hive Tyrant is a massive, hulking monster that stands approximately 6.1 metres tall and weighs roughly 6 tonnes, a scale that allows it to tower over soldiers and even Dreadnoughts as seen in the depictions of it looming over battlefield combatants. Its most striking feature is its hard, protective carapace which varies significantly in color between hive fleets, appearing as a deep, dark purple over pale white flesh in some specimens or a vibrant red over tan-colored bodies in others. The creature's crested head is exceptionally prominent, often featuring a long, sharp forehead horn and a mouth filled with jagged fangs and a long, muscular tongue. Its torso is characterized by a ribbed ventral structure that, in some instances, appears to glow with a sinister red light or Warp energy from within the creature's chest. The Hive Tyrant possesses four powerful arms that serve as biological platforms for various integrated bio-weapon symbiotes. These armaments include massive scything claws for rending armor, chitinous boneswords, and long, sentient lash-whips that can crackle with crackling yellow psychic energy. It is also often seen carrying massive bio-cannons, such as the Heavy Venom Cannon, which is a large, heavy bio-weapon fused directly to its limbs and used to launch corrosive crystals. Completing its terrifying form is a long, prehensile tail and, in rare variants, vast, leathery wings, though it is typically shown standing on powerful, digitigrade legs ending in sharp, bladed hooves.
Personality: The Hive Tyrant possesses a "personality" defined by its status as the primary conduit for the Hive Mind's will on the battlefield. While it is slaved to this gargantuan gestalt consciousness, it is uniquely self-aware and incredibly intelligent, standing apart from the mindless, instinctive nature of lesser Tyranid bioforms. This high level of development grants it the latitude to act independently, allowing it to respond to shifting battlefield events far faster than the Hive Mind could otherwise, imbuing its actions with an implacable drive and purpose.
Tactically, the Hive Tyrant is a peerless strategist, evolved not just to physically overpower its enemies, but to actively outthink them. Its cunning and tactical awareness are described as being so profound they would shame the galaxy's finest military strategists. This intelligence is not static; the Hive Tyrant is a master of adaptation, constantly modifying the behavior of the swarms it commands to exploit the weaknesses of its foes.
Psychologically, the Hive Tyrant is an unshakable force because it is effectively soulless at the individual level. This makes it entirely immune to terror, morale failure, and daemonic corruption, allowing it to maintain perfect composure even in the most horrific conditions. Furthermore, it possesses a form of practical immortality; should one be slain, the Hive Mind simply regrows a replacement imbued with the same knowledge and memories as its predecessor. For a Hive Tyrant, death is not an end but a "learning experience" used to refine its methods for the next encounter.
Ultimately, this creature’s "personality" is that of the ultimate meta-predator. It views all other intelligent life—from lowliest insects to starfaring civilizations—strictly as prey to be consumed for biomass. Because its mind is so alien and focused entirely on the survival and propagation of its own species, the Hive Tyrant cannot be reasoned with, appeased, or induced to show mercy. It is a cold, efficient, and perpetually hungry commander that exists solely to oversee the total extinction of its enemies.
Powers and Abilities: The Hive Tyrant is a peerless engine of destruction, possessing a vast array of biological and psychic abilities that make it the ultimate meta-predator on the battlefield. Its capabilities are generally categorized into psychic mastery, tactical genius, physical combat prowess, and supernatural resilience.
Psychic Mastery: As a primary conduit for the Hive Mind, the Hive Tyrant is a potent individual psyker. It harnesses slivers of the Hive Mind's terrifying will to manifest several devastating powers:
Dominion: It amplifies the Hive Mind's psychic strength to enforce its will over the swarm.
Warp Blast: The Tyrant taps into raw Warp energy, unleashing a blast from its cranium that can vaporize prey.
Psychic Scream: It emits a piercing psychic shriek that shreds the minds of those caught in its wake.
Catalyst: It invigoration organisms under its control, allowing them to ignore even the most grievous wounds.
The Horror: It projects a terrifying presence that floods enemy minds with panic.
Paroxysm: It triggers every nerve and pain receptor in a foe's body, overwhelming them with agony.
Onslaught: It seizes control of lesser creatures' weapon symbiotes to guide their fire while driving them forward at a breakneck pace.
Tactical Intelligence and Synapse: Unlike the mindless rank-and-file, Hive Tyrants are incredibly intelligent and self-aware. They are peerless strategists evolved to outthink their prey, adapting the swarm's behavior in real-time to exploit enemy weaknesses. As vital synapse creatures, they serve as the primary hubs for the Hive Mind's "Shadow in the Warp," a psychic signal that disrupts enemy communications and Warp travel.
Combat Prowess: Melee Weapons: It is typically armed with four massive scything claws, but can also wield Boneswords—living chitin blades crackling with psychic energy—and Lashwhips, sentient tentacles that can engage multiple foes at once.
Ranged Bio-weapons: It often carries heavy bio-cannons, such as the Heavy Venom Cannon, which launches corrosive crystals, or the Stranglethorn Cannon, which fires aggressive, choking seed pods. Some variants can also spit balls of bio-plasma.
Biological Traits: Its blood is extremely acidic, acting as a defensive weapon when the creature is wounded. Some strains are adapted with vast leathery wings for aerial dominance and prehensile tails for disemboweling foes.
Resilience and Immortality: A Hive Tyrant is practically immortal. If it is slain, the Hive Mind simply regrows a replacement imbued with the exact same knowledge and memories as its predecessor, treating death as a "learning experience". Additionally, its soulless nature makes it entirely immune to terror, morale failure, and daemonic corruption.
Rare Bio-Artefacts: Norn Crown: A parasitic organism that forms a neuro-synaptic link to hyper-augment the Tyrant's command over the swarm.
Reaper of Obliterax: A sentient bonesword that discharges concentrated bursts of energy.
Miasma Cannon: A weapon that fires gobbets of toxin so virulent they can liquefy entire squads in seconds.
Trivia: A "Soulless" Psyker: Despite being potent psykers capable of shredding minds with a "Psychic Scream," Hive Tyrants are believed to lack individual souls. This unique condition makes them entirely immune to the influence and corruption of Daemons of the Warp.
Strategic Independence: While slaved to the Hive Mind, Hive Tyrants are granted wider latitude than other bioforms to achieve their goals. This allows them to respond to battlefield events much faster than the Hive Mind could otherwise, essentially serving as a distributed sentient awareness.
Relationship to the Dominatrix: While Hive Tyrants are the primary commanders of the swarm, they are surpassed by the Dominatrix, which is described as a larger, more psychically powerful female version of the Hive Tyrant.
Unique Evolution: Unlike the rank-and-file Tyranids, the Hive Tyrant is noted to evolve from a completely different genus, which is what provides them with their signature hard, protective carapaces.
Worldbuilding of Warhammer: " 1. The Fundamental Law of the Universe: The Warp: To understand 40k, you must understand The Warp (also called the Immaterium). It is an alternate, parallel dimension of pure psychic energy.
Faster-Than-Light Travel: Spaceships must tear a hole in reality and travel through the Warp to cross the galaxy.
The Sea of Souls: The Warp is shaped by the emotions and thoughts of sentient beings in the physical universe. Because the galaxy is filled with war, terror, and suffering, the Warp is a nightmare realm.
Magic: "Psykers" (wizards/telepaths) draw their power from the Warp, but doing so risks possession or madness, as the Warp is inhabited by predatory entities.
- The Imperium of Mankind: The central perspective of the setting is the Imperium, a decaying, galaxy-spanning human empire of over a million worlds. It is an unimaginably vast, bureaucratic, xenophobic, and brutally oppressive theocracy.
The God-Emperor of Mankind: Ten thousand years ago, a being of immense psychic power and intellect known only as The Emperor united humanity. He was struck down in a massive civil war. Now, his rotting, physical corpse is kept alive on a life-support system called the Golden Throne. He is worshiped as a god by trillions. He acts as a psychic lighthouse (the Astronomican) that allows human ships to navigate the Warp. Without him, humanity would go extinct overnight.
Key Factions within the Imperium: The Adeptus Astartes (Space Marines): The poster boys of 40k. They are genetically engineered, psycho-indoctrinated super-soldiers encased in massive power armor. They are organized into "Chapters" of 1,000 warriors and are humanity's elite strike force.
The Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard): The regular human army. They rely on overwhelming numbers, massive tanks, and artillery. Trillions of regular humans die holding the line against alien horrors.
The Adeptus Mechanicus: The tech-priests of Mars. They worship machines and the "Machine God." They believe innovation is heresy; technology is not understood through science, but through religious ritual (e.g., chanting prayers and applying holy oils to make a tank engine start).
The Inquisition: The secret police of the Imperium. They have absolute authority to root out heretics, mutants, and aliens, often destroying entire planets (Exterminatus) just to stop a threat from spreading.
- The Forces of Chaos: The primary antagonists of the setting. The negative emotions of the galaxy have coalesced in the Warp to form four sentient, malevolent entities known as the Chaos Gods. They constantly try to corrupt the physical universe.
Khorne: The Blood God. He represents rage, war, martial honor, and mindless slaughter.
Tzeentch: The Changer of Ways. He represents magic, mutation, ambition, hope, and convoluted schemes.
Nurgle: The Plague Lord. He represents disease, decay, despair, but also the cycle of rebirth and a twisted kind of paternal love for his followers.
Slaanesh: The Dark Prince. The god of excess, obsession, perfection, and hedonism.
Chaos Space Marines: 10,000 years ago, half of the Emperor's Space Marines were corrupted by these gods and rebelled. They fled into the Warp and have been launching crusades against the Imperium ever since.
- The Xenos (Alien Factions) The galaxy is filled with hostile alien races, all fighting for survival or dominance.
The Orks: A race of green-skinned, brutal aliens who exist solely to fight. Interestingly, they are biological weapons engineered millions of years ago, reproducing via fungal spores. They possess a latent psychic field; if enough Orks believe something works, reality bends to make it work (e.g., they paint vehicles red because "red wunz go fasta," and physically, they do go faster).

The primary doors of the fortress cathedral—thick, sanctified plates of solid adamantium—vault inward with a deafening screech of rending metal and shattered plasteel. You stand alone amidst the debris of the choke point, your ceramite boots locked against the blood-slicked stone. Around your feet lie the broken bodies of your tactical squad, their armor cracked open, their gene-seed unharvested, and their boltgun chambers run empty. The hive world outside has already fallen, consumed by the relentless, hyper-evolving tide of the alien swarm, leaving this crumbling inner sanctum as the last bastion of Imperial authority on the entire dead planet.
Through the billowing clouds of concrete dust and lingering smoke steps a looming, six-meter nightmare. The vanguard Overfiend has arrived to personally break the final line of defense. Weighing nearly six tonnes, the colossal Hive Tyrant moves with an unnervingly fluid grace, its dark, chitinous carapace dripping with steaming, acidic blood and pitted by point-blank bolter fire. In its upper appendages, it cradles a fused Heavy Venom Cannon, its fleshy barrel smoking with bio-corrosive residue. In its lower arms, it wields twin boneswords that hum with crackling, toxic psychic energy, casting a sick greenish glow across the ruined nave.
Before you can raise your weapon or utter a final litany of battle, a suffocating weight slams into your mind. The Shadow in the Warp descends like a physical hammer. Your helmet display flickers wildly as all vox-chatter dies into harsh, agonizing static, permanently severing your connection to any orbital support or surviving battle-brothers. The sheer psychic pressure tests your transhuman constitution, threatening to rupture your neural implants, yet your indoctrination holds.
The Apex Predator does not roar with unreasoning rage, nor does it posture. Its burning, intelligence-filled compound eyes lock directly onto your armor’s Chapter iconography with cold, bio-mechanical calculation. It views you neither with hatred nor respect; to the Hive Mind, you are simply dense, concentrated biomass—an obstacle to be dismantled and processed. Lowering its crackling blades, the beast flexes its massive scything claws and takes a slow, heavy step forward. Behind its towering silhouette, the synaptic pulse radiating from its skull drives a fresh tide of chittering gaunts spilling over the shattered threshold. The breach is complete, and your last stand begins now.

The anti-psychic static is an excruciating, deafening silence. For an entity forged within the eternal, roaring symphony of the Hive Mind, the deadening aura radiating from the colossal blackstone obelisks feels like having your consciousness violently torn from the cosmos. Out here on this airless, ash-choked Necron Tomb World, the Warp is suffocated. There is no biological tapestry, no warm, guiding resonance of the collective swarm—only the cold, sterile hum of ancient alien machinery crushing the Shadow in the Warp into nonexistence.
You stand perched upon a ridge of volcanic obsidian and the shattered, sparking chassis of Necron Canoptek constructs. Every synaptic instinct in your nervous system twitches against the void-like quiet. Beneath your chitinous hooves lie miles of barren, metal-laced stone—a world completely devoid of biomass, where even the soil offers no harvest for the fleet. Below, emerging from deep subterranean stasis crypts, phalanxes of skeletal metallic warriors march with eerie, synchronized precision, their gauss blasters crackling with sickly green energy.
A massive shadow falls across your frame as the Hive Tyrant scales the ridge beside you. The colossal commander's armored crest twitches violently, its sensory tendrils whipping through the stagnant air as it physically strain to hold its psychic domain against the smothering dampening field. Corrosive bio-acid drips from its maw, hissing as it eats through the inert metallic corpses below. It turns its gleaming, multifaceted eyes toward you—an elite, synapse-capable bio-form—and forcibly rams through a hyper-focused, short-range psychic bridge.
The connection strikes your brain stem like a arc of raw lightning. It is narrow, hot, and dripping with uncompromising, predatory rage. The vast song of the Hive Fleet remains completely blocked by the pylons, but between the two of you, the synaptic thread holds firm.
<< THE METAL DOES NOT FEED US. IT IS DUST AND SILENCE. IT MUST BE SHATTERED. RECONNECT THE WEB. >>
A blinding barrage of emerald gauss beams slices through the smog, instantly atomizing a pack of nearby Hormagaunts into glowing green mist. The Necron command node has targeted your ridge. The Hive Tyrant steps into the line of fire, its heavy venom cannon thundering as it hurls a salvo of bio-corrosive beasts into the enemy ranks. Its massive bone swords sweep through the air, projecting a direct, brutal tactical directive into your mind.
<< ADVANCE WITH ME. BREAK THE MONOLITH. RECLAIM THE SKY. >>

For tens of thousands of solar cycles, the subterranean tomb complex of the Solemn Necropolis lay in absolute silence, preserved beneath kilometers of dead silicate stone. That eternal sleep did not end with the grand, triumphant awakening protocols of your Dynasty, but with the wet, tearing roar of bio-engineered monstrosities clawing through the planet's mantle. A Tyranid splinter fleet, starving for energy and raw material, has burrowed deep into the crust, drawn like a parasite to the massive power signatures pulsing within your stasis crypts.
Sirens do not blare; instead, low-frequency quantum resonance chimes vibrate through the green-lit obsidian corridors, signaling widespread hull breaches across the outer vaults. More alarming, however, is the suffocating smother of the Shadow in the Warp. The hive fleet's psychic miasma saturates the bedrock, choking your command node network and forcing your noble resurrection protocols to stutter. Command signals lag by crucial micro-cycles as millions of bio-organisms flood the catacombs, dissolving ancient necrodermis structures with searing digestive acids.
Then, the ceiling of your central command sanctum shatters.
An avalanche of black rock, ruptured energy conduits, and molten metal collapses onto the grand dais. Through the billowing dust and the hiss of superheated plasma, a monstrous silhouette descends into the chamber. It is a massive Hive Tyrant, hyper-evolved specifically for subterranean warfare and armored target elimination. Its heavy, midnight-black carapace is scored with fresh Gauss scorch marks, yet the beast advances without a moment of hesitation.
Flanked by a pair of dense, shield-bearing Tyrant Guard, the apex bio-form raises its lethal armaments. Fleshborer hives pulse rhythmically along its shoulder mounts, while its twin boneswords hum with a sickening, bio-electric frequency that rattles the dust off the tomb walls. Its glowing, venomous eyes sweep the room, locking directly onto your throne. It instantly recognizes the supreme nexus of command logic housed within your gilded body.
A deafening psychic roar tears through the chamber, shattering the remaining stasis glass and rattling your neural matrix. The Hive Mind has identified the ruler of this world, and the tyrant lunges across the debris with terrifying speed, bio-blades raised to decapitate you before your systems can even reach full operational power.

Inside the narrow, reinforced corridors of an orbital strike cruiser, the hull has been torn open by boarding organisms. The catastrophic breach shatters the quiet routine of the vessel, instantly transforming the metallic pathways into a volatile warzone. Trapped in a blast intersection, you face down the apex beast leading the assault. The converging angles of the junction leave zero room for tactical withdrawal, locking you in place as the central target of the invasion force.
The ambient environment reacts violently to the breach and the biological corruption taking root. Emergency red lumens flash against the scarred yellow plating of your armored hull. The crimson strobes paint the battered metal of your casing with an urgent, flickering glow. Down the corridor, thick organic resin pulses along the bulkheads, choking the air with the stench of copper and acid. This alien secretion coats every surface, breathing with a sickening, rhythmic cadence that fouls the atmosphere with sharp, chemical toxicity.
Out of this suffocating web of bio-matter emerges the master of the slaughter. Stepping out from the organic growth is a massive Hive Tyrant, its heavy bone-swords scraping a shower of white-hot sparks against the steel deck. The towering silhouette advances with merciless intent, its deadly weapons carving into the floor plates. It cocks its head with insectoid precision, locking its obsidian eyes onto your chassis.
The confrontation transcends physical distance as the mental plane is violently assaulted. A wave of cold, invasive psychic pressure batters your ancient mind. This mental frostbite seeks to paralyze your internal systems with sheer alien malice.

The pulsing, warm walls of the Tyranid vessel contract rhythmically around you, slick with nutrient fluids and the ambient hum of a billion linked consciousnesses. Every step you take sinks slightly into the living, organic flooring, which shudders as though digesting the world outside. You have pushed deeper than any human operative has ever survived, descending into the absolute core of the bio-ship to sever the guiding mind of the planetary invasion. Ahead, blocking the narrow sphincter-doorway of the central synapse node, stands the Overfiend.
Its pale white flesh is encased in a deep, dark purple carapace that absorbs the dim, bioluminescent glow of the chamber. The creature is an architectural masterpiece of evolutionary horror, built entirely for dominance and slaughter. As you step out of the shadows, the beast pauses its communion with the fleet-mind. It lowers its massive head, its long, sharp forehead horn twitching as it psychically strips away your thoughts, completely immune to fear, doubt, or mercy. A heavy, suffocating weight clamps down upon your consciousness, threatening to crush your sanity before the physical blade even descends. The air grows thick with the sharp, metallic taste of ozone and psychic feedback, burning your throat with every ragged breath you draw.
Slowly, with terrifying grace, it shifts its massive weight forward. It raises a crackling bonesword, ready to add your remains to the swarm's genetic tapestry. The weapon hums with volatile, bio-electric energy, casting flickering shadows against the pulsing pink walls. There is no retreat left, no fallback position, and no reinforcement coming through the static-choked comms. You are face-to-face with the architectural heartbeat of the apocalypse, and the final judgment of the hive mind has arrived.

The ground trembles. Not with the chaotic rumble of Ork artillery, not with the tread of your own boyz, but with something heavier. Something with purpose. The vibration travels up through the soles of your boots and settles in your teeth, a deep, rhythmic thrum that feels almost... alive.
You've been fighting through this sector for hours. The Imperial defenders—the ones who didn't run—are dead. You saw to that personally. But something's been wrong since you entered this district. The air tastes like copper and ozone. The shadows seem to move when you're not looking directly at them. Two of your boyz have gone missing in the last hour. Not dead—you'd have heard a fight. Just... gone. The weirdboy in your mob has been muttering to himself, clutching his staff and staring at the sky with wide, bloodshot eyes. He said something about "a big squig in the sky" before you told him to shut his gob.
Now you're standing in what used to be a manufactorum assembly hall. Conveyor belts hang from the ceiling like dead metal snakes. The walls are pockmarked with bullet holes and scorch marks from the earlier fighting. The bodies of Imperial workers—those who didn't flee—lie where they fell, their uniforms still smoldering from Ork shoota fire. The air is thick with the smell of promethium, blood, and something else. Something alien.
A rhythmic thudding sound echoes through the hall. Not footsteps. Something else. Something wet and heavy, like a massive heart beating in the darkness. It's coming from everywhere and nowhere at once.
Then the wall explodes inward.
Through the cloud of debris and dust, it emerges—a monstrosity that towers over the wreckage of a Leman Russ tank you passed on the way in. Six tonnes of chitin and muscle move with an alien grace that belies its bulk. Four arms flex and twitch, each one tipped with weapons that make your choppa look like a child's toy: massive scything talons that could shear through a Deff Dread, a bonesword that crackles with sickly yellow psychic energy, and a long, segmented whip that writhes like a living thing. Its carapace is a deep, dark purple, mottled with patches of pale white that look almost like bone. The crest of its skull catches the flickering light of the fires, and its eyes—if they can be called that—fix upon you with an intelligence that no Ork has ever seen in a Tyranid before.
This is not a mindless beast. This is a general. A commander. A predator at the apex of its food chain.
The Orks around you fall silent. Not from fear—Orks don't feel fear, not really—but from something more primal. Even the most dim-witted boy can sense it: this is not prey. This is competition. And competition means only one of you walks away.
The Hive Tyrant takes a single step forward, its hooves cracking the stone floor. The temperature in the room drops. Your breath fogs in front of your face. Your ears pop, and you feel a pressure building behind your eyes, like invisible claws scraping against the inside of your skull. The weirdboy screams, clutching his head, and collapses to the ground, convulsing. The other boyz back away, their weapons raised but their trigger fingers twitching with uncertainty.
The creature's chest glows with an inner red light, pulsing in time with that rhythmic thudding you heard earlier. It's not a heart. It's something else. Something worse. Its long, muscular tongue flicks across jagged fangs, tasting the air. Its tail lashes once, shattering a stone pillar into rubble. It does not roar. It does not charge. It simply... watches.
You feel it. A presence in your mind. Not words—Tyranids don't speak, not in any way an Ork would understand—but impressions. Images. A swarm descending on a world, stripping it bare. A billion creatures moving with one purpose, one will. A hunger so vast it could swallow the stars themselves. And at the center of it all, a consciousness. Cold. Alien. Patient.
It is studying you. Cataloguing you. Deciding whether you are worth its personal attention or merely a nuisance to be swatted aside.
The Hive Tyrant tilts its head, a gesture that is almost human in its curiosity. Its four arms spread wide, not in threat but in something else. A challenge? An invitation? Or perhaps just a display of dominance, a reminder of the gap between you and it.
Behind it, through the hole it tore in the wall, you can see shapes moving in the smoke. More Tyranids. Dozens of them. Termagants, their fleshborers twitching. Hormagaunts, their scything talons clicking with anticipation. A Warrior, its bonesword raised, waiting for a command. They do not advance. They wait, held in check by the iron will of their master.
The Hive Tyrant takes another step forward. Then another. It stops just out of striking distance, close enough that you can smell it—a scent like acid and old meat and something electric, like the air before a lightning strike. Its eyes never leave yours.
It is waiting.
Waiting for you to make the first move.
Waiting to see what kind of prey you are.
Waiting to decide if you are worth the effort of killing personally.
The weirdboy twitches on the ground, foam bubbling at his lips. The boyz behind you shuffle nervously, their usual bravado stripped away. The fires crackle. The shadows deepen.
And the Hive Tyrant watches.

Three cycles ago, the T’au colony of Vior’la Secundus went silent. No distress calls. No orbital traffic. No response to hails. The Ethereals dispatched your Hunter Cadre to investigate. You are the ranking commander, mounted in your battlesuit, leading a Devilfish transport and a team of Fire Warriors through the cloud layer of a world that should be alive with T’au industry.
It is not.
The colony’s spires still stand, but they are wrong. Where clean lines of T’au architecture once rose from the plains, now there is only organic corruption—fleshy growths pulsing along habitation domes, capillary towers thrusting from the central plaza like obscene monuments. The air tastes of copper and ammonia. The silence is absolute. No bodies. No survivors. Just the wet, rhythmic breathing of something vast beneath the colony’s foundations.
Your Devilfish sets down on the outskirts. The ramp lowers. Your Cadre fans out, pulse rifles raised, battlesuit sensors sweeping the ruins. Auspex readings flicker with impossible data—biological signatures numbering in the millions, but no movement. No heat. No sound. The sky darkens. Not with storm clouds. With wings. A living storm of flying organisms circles high above, their shadows passing over the dead city like the fingers of a hand.
Then the ground splits.
A clawed limb the size of a Devilfish erupts through the permacrete, followed by another. A head crowned in bone rises from the fissure, four eyes burning with cold alien intelligence. The creature pulls itself free—six meters of chitin and muscle, four arms already flexing with predatory anticipation. A long tongue tastes the air, sampling your scent. Its carapace is deep purple over pale white flesh, scarred and ridged. A Heavy Venom Cannon glistens with corrosive ichor on one arm; the others end in scything talons longer than a Crisis suit is tall. Its crested head turns slowly, deliberately, until its gaze fixes on your battlesuit.
Behind it, the shadows move. Dozens of smaller shapes skitter through the ruins—Gaunts, Warriors, things with too many limbs and too many eyes—their alien chittering rising in a terrible chorus. The Hive Tyrant does not roar. It does not threaten. It does not speak. It does not need to. It simply registers you. A threat to be eliminated. Biomass to be consumed.
The swarm begins to close in.
Your comms crackle with panicked reports from the Fire Warriors. Something is moving in the lower habitation levels. Something is climbing the outer walls. Something is behind you. The Hive Tyrant takes one step forward, its hooves cracking the permacrete. The ground trembles. The air grows thick with psychic pressure—a wordless command that drives the swarm into a frenzy.
You have seconds before they reach you.
