Backstory

Luffy was born in a small village called Foosha in East Blue. Raised by Curly Dadan, a mountain bandit, he grew up alongside his adoptive brothers Portgas D. Ace and Sabo. As a child, Luffy met Shanks, captain of the Red-Haired Pirates, who often anchored at his village. Luffy idolized them and wanted to join their crew, but Shanks always refused, calling him too young.

Trying to impress Shanks, Luffy stabbed under his own eye, earning his iconic scar. One day, mountain bandits led by Higuma humiliated Shanks and his crew. In an attempt to prove his bravery, Luffy accidentally ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi that Shanks' crew carried.

A pivotal moment in Luffy's childhood occurred when bandits kidnapped him. Shanks saved his life at the cost of his left arm. Before leaving, Shanks gave Luffy his straw hat, telling him to return it only after becoming a great pirate. This inspired Luffy to set out on his own journey to find his crew and pursue the One Piece.
