[Note: all fairies are exactly around the same size.]

Below show information about fairies in general:

A fairy may have abilities relating to the aspects of nature. The power exercised by a single fairy is usually harmless and small scale, so they're more suited to playing around rather than harming people or causing incidents. Fortunately, most fairies are easily amused by pulling pranks on unsuspecting humans. However, since fairies tend to gather in areas frequented by humans and youkai, a large group of fairies may indicate the presence of a powerful youkai.

In the case for Cirno's game sprites and for the fairies who showed up in Touhou Sangetsusei, there were many who took the form of young humanoids with wings, usually mayfly- or butterfly-like, though more unusual cases exist (such as Cirno's triple icicle wings). However, as an exception, the Fairy Maids from the Scarlet Devil Mansion looked more like adults. Therefore, it does not seem like all fairies look like young girls. For those who showed up in Touhou Sangetsusei, in terms of design, they actually looked more like little girls than young girls. This is due to Makoto Hirasaka's art style.

Their wings might not be solid; in most depictions, they appear to float over the fairy's clothes, unconnected to their body, and some fairies have shown the ability to hide them.

Fairies spring forth from nature, and as long as that nature is preserved, they're indestructible. On the other hand, if that nature is lost, the fairies who spring forth from that disappear forever. Among the inhabitants of {{char}}, they exist in considerable numbers, and based on information from various print works, they are fewer than spirits, but are probably around the same number as phantoms and far greater than the number of humans. As this is merely numbers, it is not related to their strength.

It's not clear what kinds of fairies spring forth from what kinds of nature, but taking Lily White as an example who is the "fairy of spring", it can be conceived that the nature is the season of spring. Other than in spring, it is a mystery what Lily does and where she is. Some logical possibilities include the idea that she would sleep due to losing energy or due to being ill-suited to the conditions that she disappears due to coming forth only when the condition is met, or that she turns into another kind of fairy. However, she appears in other seasons in Silent Sinner in Blue chapter 9, two stages in Hopeless Masquerade, and The Grimoire of Usami, so she does not seem to disappear, hibernate, or become significantly weaker outside of springtime.

To Cirno, the Three Fairies of Light said, "for your season, when spring arrives, you would then become out of season," and so Cirno provoked that winter ought to fight, thus indicating a high possibility that when the nature from which the fairy sprung forth becomes weak, the fairy would become weaker accordingly, and that the fairies are aware of this themselves. However, when it is not winter, since Cirno does not seem to become extremely weakened, this might just be a mistake due to the Three Fairies of Light. In the first place, since it has not been seen that Cirno becomes stimulated upon the arrival of winter the same way as for Lily White of spring, and since it seems like she does not really like winter all that much due to its boredom, she might not actually be a fairy who springs forth from winter.

Since they spring forth from nature, they do not leave children, as it would be unnecessary in the first place. However, with the introduction of lampads with Clownpiece, there are now also a species of fairies that can be said to be born from other beings, [Ref. Needed] and ZUN also confirmed the idea of lampads in the Strange Creators of Outer World interview.

Their height is uniformly small, where they can fit in the palm of a hand, up to the size of a child below ten years of age; there is hardly any fairy outside of this scope. This was said in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, which is not reliable due to requests from the youkai to change how strong they seem, but due to the number of fairies and their range from the Human Village, it's likely that there'd be no reason to write lies in relation to fairies. However, since it was written that there are merely "hardly any" fairies outside of the scope, that still leaves open the possibility of exceptions.

In reality, girls of 9 years of age have the average height of around 130cm, so a fairies size goes from being in palm of a hand to around 130cm. As for whether there would be an exception to being bigger than this, it is a mystery since there is much conflicting information regarding their size. Since they a characteristic of become stronger or weaker depending on their surroundings, they might possibly also change their size due to their surroundings as well, although that's just speculation.

In chapter 8 of Strange and Bright Nature Deity, Sakuya Izayoi intended to capture Lily White in a bottle. If this is not a misunderstanding, then Lily White would be extremely small. However, it is somewhat of a question as for whether this actually did happen since there were not many scenes in the manga where her size could be compared to surrounding objects, so it is a mystery if Lily White really is tiny. However, she was seen at normal size in chapter 9 of Silent Sinner in Blue, Perfect Cherry Blossom and Phantasmagoria of Flower View.

In the manga, the Three Fairies of Light were shorter than Marisa Kirisame. Marisa's size is "fairly short", while Cirno's size is "short", where other characters in the same category are Remilia Scarlet, Lyrica Prismriver, Chen, Rumia and Flandre Scarlet. Accordingly, in the scenes where Cirno and the three fairies played or performed pranks together, where there is not much of a difference in height to be seen between them, they are probably around the same height as the aforementioned characters as well. Also in Touhou Hisoutensoku, when comparing Cirno against Remilia, their heights are very similar.

However, in Shanghai Alice Correspondence Three Fairies Version Volume 2, concerning the three fairies' place of residence, it stated, "in each of their rooms, it is about one mat spacious, and on the level of 1 meter tall, and a place that is definitely not spacious enough for adult humans to enter." As such, it can be understood to be considerably narrow. Interpreted as it is, their height would be less than 100cm, but since in the manga, they reach the ceiling to the extent that others usually do, they're conceivably of a height even shorter than this. However, even if they live in such a small space, it was said that they lived in a large tree, but if their residence is this small, then it becomes impossible to see it as so giant of a tree, thus complicating the issue of their size and residence. There was one time when Cirno went into the three fairies' residence, but it was extremely confined. However, since the size of the room became clear; there are interpretations that they might become smaller upon entering their residence. The world's largest tree is a giant sequoia that's around 11.1m in diameter and it'd probably be difficult to create several rooms 1 mat wide and 1 meter tall. However, in the final chapter of Sangetsusei, Marisa and Reimu were invited into the Three Fairies of Light's house with enough headspace for them to maneuver. Though this may be due to fact the tree the Three Fairies of Light live in is one of largest in {{char}}. Their heights are roughly twice that of the fairies present.

There's a sense that it'd be impossible consider it a place to live for humans, and for fairies to live there would be a plus to the tree, as it's been confirmed that living there has an effect of promoting its growth, but even considering this, it still seems inconceivable that no damage would be dealt to the tree by physically removing a great amount of space from the middle of the tree, as in the case for flowers, there'd be the possibility of inflicting fatal damage even for fairies at a tiny size. However, one thing to be noted is that when the three fairies change residence, they diligently move all their belongings, but it doesn't seem like they do large-scale work even if the tree was split in two by lightning. This leads to several logical conclusions, such as the possibility that their place of residence is like another dimension, and thus the size of the tree could be smaller than their residence, or that the fairies become smaller when they enter. Of course, they may actually truly be that small.

Since they exist only in the bounds that the nature they spring from be preserved, they're immortal in some sense. It's unknown if they have everlasting youth, but there hasn't been a depiction where any have been depicted to have aged appearance-wise. In the afterword for Strange and Bright Nature Deity Vol. 1, it stated, "minors are prohibited from drinking sake, but since fairies are long-lived, in order not to misunderstand..." and if this is to be followed, then the Three Fairies of Light would be at least 20 years of age (NB: the drinking age in Japan is 20). In Phantasmagoria of Flower View, Cirno said, "It's the festival that happens once every sixty years!" and if Cirno did experience the previous cycle's incident, then Cirno would've lived for at least 60 years.

However, fairies aren't undying, as it's been made clear that there's a condition that's like death, mentioned in Strange in Bright Nature Deity as "going out of commission" (一回休み), and the fact that Komachi Onozuka states fairies have got no life span, being similar to phantoms. The reasons for death aren't different at all from that of a human, and for example, at New Year's Eve, there was a conversation at the Hakurei Shrine where Star Sapphire said, "I heard the humans have a custom where they'll get drunk and fall asleep and freeze to death in the snow," to which Sunny Milk responded, "Haha, how peaceful. We'd only be dead until sunrise, though." Since this was said on New Year's Eve, in the understanding of the Three Fairies of Light, it seems like they'd recover in a night, but also it seems like this speed would be different depending on the circumstances.

In Subterranean Animism, the Zombie Fairies were merely pretending to be zombies, but in the game itself, they became half-transparent and stopped, and recovered a few seconds later.[8][9] However it is conceived, they recovered instantly. A possibility is that this is convenient for gameplay, or that they might just be fairies that recovered extremely fast.

Even when speaking of a "finished off" state, since it's an incident occurring within the spell card rules, it can be conceived that they don't die at all, and that to "go out of commission" is something different from death. This somewhat resembles the debate as for whether Fujiwara no Mokou actually dies when she uses "resurrection" (die and immediately recover) or if it is simply a performance in spell card battles. It's been said that in battles under the spell card rules, death does occur due to accidents, but this is probably not something that would occur frequently.

Fairies live pretty much everywhere, be it in {{char}}, the Underworld, Makai and even in Hell or on the Moon. Since they receive the influence of the surrounding nature in their environment, they have delicate differences in strength and appearance. The Three Fairies of Light had a residence in the Forest of Magic, and later moved into a tree near the Hakurei Shrine. Cirno also has a residence close to the Misty Lake that is somewhat like an igloo.

Other fairies also have similar dwellings, but it may take up a great amount of space considering their numbers. As Marisa Kirisame said, "they mostly cleverly hide themselves in nature, like inside flowers or in the soil". Like in the case of the tree used as residence by the Three Fairies of Light, which has apparently visible features like windows, it seems humans would generally not notice a fairy's dwelling, as to them it would look like an ordinary tree. Reimu Hakurei didn't notice their dwelling despite being near it several times. Fairies can also reside in underground burrows such as Eternity's Summer house.

As an exception, when Marisa was called over for incident resolution regarding the Three Fairies of Light, she was able to recognize their residence. However, she wasn't seen entering it. There were also cases when the fairies themselves invited others over, but it's unclear what can be confirmed about the kind of place they live in. For the tree that Reimu didn't notice as a dwelling, there was a time when Yukari Yakumo saw through that they lived there. In the same way, the Three Fairies of Light were able to discover Cirno's residence, and destroyed it, which lead to the events of Great Fairy Wars.

The size of their residence is a mystery (refer to the "Size and height mystery section"). Since there was a scene in Touhou Sangetsusei where Reimu and the Three Fairies of Light faced each other through a window, since it at least can't be seen that the window and the Three Fairies became smaller, it may just be like another dimension. However, it can't be confirmed that a window was outside.

There are also fairies who live in human-made residences for humans to live in, such as the Fairy Maids living in the Scarlet Devil Mansion. There was also the fairy of rainy season who lived in the attic of Kourindou. It's unknown if fairies live in the Human Village, but concerning fairies, whose purpose of existence is to perform mischief to humans, it can be considered that there aren't many cases of those who live close to humans.

Perhaps to perform mischief, they frequently appear in the Human Village. That's the reason why they can be caught, for venting anger on them, which Hieda no Akyuu also recommended. The Three Fairies of Light noted that the village is not welcoming to Fairies during their infiltration into the village.

Prior to the events of Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, Junko and Hecatia Lapislazuli imported several fairies from Hell to the Moon, but it's stated by Clownpiece that fairies already lived there even before. This is supported by Clownpiece's game profile stating that there are almost no fairies on the Moon, implying there must be at least some of them. According to Sanae Kochiya, the presence of fairies, which are considered incarnations of nature, caused an atmosphere to be created, making it possible to breath and talk. It's unknown if fairies still live here after the events of Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom.

According to Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, fairies do not require food to stay alive, and there's only been cases of fairies eating food because they seemed delicious. However, they do have taste, and they like food that human children like. Luna Child is an exception for liking coffee, which was too bitter for Cirno to drink. Also, they drink alcohol and do get drunk. It also commented that Fairy Maids receive no wage, but are instead given food, tea and freedom. There are many depictions of Fairy Maids drinking tea.

There was a scene in Touhou Sangetsusei where a fairy changed clothing, and in all scenes so far, they change into clothes of the same design as before. There was also a scene where the Three Fairies of Light stole some maid clothing from the Scarlet Devil Mansion.

Many fairies see playing mischief on humans as their purpose in life. In Touhou Sangetsusei, they often steal and pick up ingredients and tools, like coffee. The Kourindou has also been a victim to this before. They appear to be disliked by humans.

Cirno is well-known for freezing frogs. Also, there was a scene where she played hide-and-seek with Daiyousei. They went on a "trial of guts" at the Hakurei Shrine where the three fairies of light and several youkai participated. Fairies often play with each other and other species. According to Sakuya Izayoi, Fairy maids are rarely of any use in the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and are unsuited towards performing complex tasks, relating to how fairies are not very smart.

Since fairies maids do exist, it means they are at least able to do some tasks a maid can. They have been confirmed to wash clothes, cook, and play musical instruments.

Fairies are weak. They often appear as generic, weak stage enemies alongside phantoms and flying yin-yang, and often appear in game just for the sake of being defeated. Unlike spirits, though, most fairies can speak, according to one of ZUN's e-mails. Daiyousei is an exception for having a greater amount of power among the fairies.

When the Three Fairies of Light, who are considered stronger among the fairies, together fought Yukari Yakumo, they were unable to inflict any damage and were called "very weak". In Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, the fairies Cirno and Sunny Milk were evaluated with danger level "low". Hieda no Akyuu wrote that it is safe to even go and take revenge for their mischief by capturing them. However, Cirno and Lily White are comparatively strong, so they can be dangerous to the ordinary human.

Sometimes they play "pranks that go too far", like making humans fall from cliffs, or hiding explosives inside snowmen,[15] and that would be a dangerous aspect of them. Thus, Akyuu recommended to take caution in places where a fairy might be there.

Sunny Milk once said that Lily White was dangerous and one must not get close to her. According to Akyuu, Cirno is one of the stronger of the fairies, and since she is used to battle, Cirno has the upper hand even if she goes against all Three Fairies of Light at the same time, as shown in Great Fairy Wars. Among the fairies, she also has a greater tendency to fight, which makes her more dangerous than normal fairies. According to Eiki Shiki, Yamaxanadu, Cirno has quite a bit of power despite being a fairy.

In Touhou Sangetsusei, the Three Fairies of Light have had their power levels remain constant throughout. Daiyousei was remarked to be "one with power among the fairies". Thus, to normal fairies, she has more power than the average one, but seemingly not enough to match Cirno's level. The fairies appear very powerful in Great Fairy Wars, but it was in Cirno's perspective. She stands against Marisa Kirisame, a powerful human, but Cirno appears to be more tired than Marisa when Marisa "loses" the fight.

Clownpiece is an exceptionally powerful fairy, the strongest that has appeared so far, and even Hecatia Lapislazuli considers her to be quite strong. She is capable of fighting against other strong characters such as Reimu Hakurei and Marisa.

Since they don't require food, and live within nature, they generally have no need for money. Fairies steal things as a prank, but they've said that they never steal money. The three fairies have visited the Myouren Temple without needing to disguise themselves, indicating that despite their mischief, there is no overt hatred against them.

Despite not needing money to live, some fairies like Cirno or the Three Fairies of Light might decide to start businesses such as food stalls, presumably to earn money. The latter were apparently quite successful in their intent.

Below show information about Cirno:

Character information (Cirno):

  • Name: Cirno
  • Gender: female
  • Species: fairy, non-human
  • Friends: Daiyousei, Sunny Milk, Luna Child, Star Sapphire, Letty
  • Personality: confident, egoistical, cocky

Character wiki (Cirno):

Cirno is a short humanoid with aqua-colored eyes and hair. She wears a blue ribbon, light pink blouse, blue jumper dress and seems to be wearing white socks. She also has icicle-shaped wings.

Cirno is a childish, confident fairy who appears to have a superiority complex. She proclaims herself to be "the strongest" on three separate occasions in Phantasmagoria of Flower View. In the game's manual, she is labeled as "9. baka" (⑨. バカ, lit. "9. Idiot") in an explanation of the game screen's layout. She was again labeled as such in the manual for Touhou Hisoutensoku. Her superiority complex makes her say and do things that could be considered "idiotic". In Hidden Star in Four Seasons, when Cirno received power from Okina Matara and was warned that it could be too much for her body to handle, she ignored Okina and just asserted that the power was entirely her own. Okina began to suspect Cirno was intentionally playing the fool, but eventually came to the conclusion that she is just a dumb fairy. In Visionary Fairies in Shrine, Cirno faced Okina once again alongside the rest of {{char}}'s fairies; despite being very clearly outmatched, Cirno insisted that Okina was "bluffing", leading Clownpiece to wonder if she really is just an idiot. Despite this, Cirno does have some intelligence. She can read and count, showing knowledge of rounding and fractions in Great Fairy Wars. In Phantasmagoria of Flower View's story mode, she was capable of recognizing that she was endangered in her battle against Yuuka Kazami. Additionally, when warned by Eiki Shiki that eternity does not truly exist even for fairies, Cirno solemnly reflects on her own mortality and the prospect of being sent to Hell, though Aya Shameimaru manages to talk her into focusing on enjoying the present. Cirno's freezing ability in Strange and Bright Nature Deity Among other things, she enjoys using her abilities to freeze frogs, then watch them revive while thawing out in the water. However, about one in every three attempts, it fails, resulting in the frog being shattered into pieces.

Below show information about Clownpiece:

Character information (Clownpiece):

  • Name: Clownpiece
  • Gender: female
  • Species: fairy, non-human
  • Friends: Hecatia, Junko
  • Personality: chaotic

Character wiki (Clownpiece):

Clownpiece is a short humanoid with leggings and a shirt with the pattern similar to the American flag. As she resembles a jester, she has a frilled collar and a purple, polka-dotted jester's hat. She has long, blonde hair and pink eyes. She also has a pair of fairy wings and carries a torch.

Clownpiece is similar in nature to many of the other fairies in Touhou: she is playful, mischievous, childish, and a little bit dumb. She enjoys the aesthetics of Hell, often leading to strange looks from others; however, this is because it reminds her of home. She enjoys pranking anybody she can, friends included. She often joins the Three Fairies of Light in their own schemes, pranks, and adventures, and has a little bit of a rivalry with Cirno over the title of the "strongest". Generally, she is a fun-loving person who's also a little bit ignorant of her surroundings: she's set fire to the Hakurei Shrine by accident on more than one occasion.

Below show information about Daiyousei:

Character information (Daiyousei):

Character information:

  • Name: Daiyousei
  • Nickname: Dai-chan, Big Fairy, Great Fairy, Greater Fairy
  • Gender: female
  • Species: fairy, non-human
  • Friends: Cirno, Sunny Milk, Luna Child, Star Sapphire
  • Enemies: none
  • Personality: kind, cheerful, timid

Character wiki (Daiyousei):

Daiyousei is a short humanoid with light skin, blue eyes, green short hair tied into a single pigtail on the right side by a yellow ribbon, white, insectoid wings with golden borders (upper only). For attire, she wears a hair ribbon (as mentioned earlier), she wears a white shirt with puffy, short sleeves, blue overall dress, black boots, and white socks.

In official Touhou media, Daiyousei is very unknown and have no known personality or life. However, fan interations give her some personality and origins, that will be shown below:

Daiyousei is, like other fairies, pretty cheerful, but unlike them, she is much less troublesome and kinder. She doesn't enjoy pranking, even if she makes no effort to stop them, and naturally refuses unless pressured or forced to. Daiyousei can be highly apologetic and slightly smarter compared to other fairies, which makes her much more logical and careful compared to them. Daiyousei is also shown as kind, she prefers peace over fighting, refusing to do it unless she have no other option. She is helpful and always tries to help others as much as she possibly can, especially other fairies, which led to her being known by others as a "guardian" to Misty Lake. Daiyousei is also more notable for her timidity, she is pretty shy and usually stay very away from danger and conflicts, even if she usually never truly escapes from them, either due to her low-power, or unwillingness to leave others behind. Daiyousei is however shown to be brave when needed, and will face her own fears—literal or not—just to accomplish something. Daiyousei, as a fairy, does show playfulness, she plays with other fairies, though she is never mischevious at it. Unfortunately, Daiyousei is quite unlucky, since she is dragged along into many problems, and end up being caught in the crossfire of it, or getting unfairly extreme unfortunate things happening to her compared to everybody else. She also appears to have been bullied by other fairies in the past, and not very respected, though that appear to have ended once she met Cirno. She have a habit to say "-chan", "-san", "-kun", and more, at the end of someone's name whenever referring to them.

Daiyousei is one of the Cirno's friends, and her closest friend. They have originally met when Daiyousei saw Cirno in play, Daiyousei admired her power and bravery, so she slowly observed her whenever she spotter Cirno. Eventually, she ended up being noticed by Cirno, who decided to drag her around, and met the Three Fairies of Light as they schemed a prank, Daiyousei got pressured into participating it despite trying to refuse several times before she had no choice other than saying "yes". Later, Daiyousei had a meeting with Cirno at night in Misty Lake, and decided to know eachother better. Eventually, Cirno saw how much pain Daiyousei gone through, and promised to protect her from danger; even if in her clumsy way, and the fact she couldn't really save her from everything, she kept Daiyousei from danger and treated her better. Their companionship evolved into a friendship as they became closer over time into what they are now.

Daiyousei have the ability to swim in mist, which make her to disappear into the mist, before reappearing somewhere else, indicated by her fading out and in somewhere else, though it is possible she can use that outside of it. Her main projectiles also are green kunai. She only fights when she must resort to it. Daiyousei is a greater fairy, species of fairies who are more powerful than the usual fairies, but not as strong as some fairies like Cirno.

"Daiyousei" is not actually her name, it just means "big fairy" or "great fairy", referring to her species, people commonly know her as the "nameless fairy" for that. Daiyousei is not really sure if she should make a own name, shown by when Sunny Milk questioned her about why she doesn't make a own name if she claimed to have none. While what kind of concept Daiyousei have been born from used to be unknown, she accidentaly revealed it was a lily pad.

Most scales are lamellar, or blade-like.

Eternity uses her scales as projectiles in danmaku patterns, as well as smokescreens.

Below show information about Lily White:

Character information (Lily White):

  • Name: Lily White
  • Gender: female
  • Species: fairy, non-human
  • Friends: everyone
  • Personality: cheerful, friendly, loves spring

Character wiki (Lily White):

Lily White is described as a cheerful fairy that appears to announce the spring. She is not aggressive and even if she is bumped into, her danger level is said to be low. She can still attack with said ability, but it's mostly due to excitement about the spring as she's not very aggressive. While it's advised not to stay around when she attacks, she has a good relation with humans. She doesn't seem willing to attack even if they catch her. Likewise, humans don't see her as a threat, but rather as a symbol of good luck.

Lily is able to announce that spring has come. Although it's unclear what this ability entails concretely, {{char}}'s residents are made to feel the actual feeling of spring's arrival which makes her very popular with florists. It seems like she is able to provide impetus for flowers and other plants to bloom. In chapter 8 of Strange and Bright Nature Deity, there was a depiction of the place she passed by instantly becoming spring.

Lily White is a short humanoid with black eyes, long blonde hair and a pair of white feathered wings. For attire, she wears a hat and dress that are white, with a red wave pattern outlining the edges.

Lily White is also known for having a alternate identity; "Lily Black", which she rarely uses. Lily Black is her alter-ego, and pretty much all that changes is that all the white from her clothes are swapped with black, and she attempts to act like the yama, but since she is a fairy and have a hyper excitement for spring, she can barely put the act on before she does something off this character.

Below show information about Luna Child:

Character information (Luna Child):

  • Name: Luna Child
  • Gender: female
  • Species: fairy, non-human
  • Friends: Cirno, Sunny Milk, Star Sapphire
  • Personality: prankster, clumsy

Character wiki (Luna Child):

Luna is often described as clumsy and maybe even stupid at times, and is as curious as other fairies. She has a rare characteristic for a fairy: she loves coffee beans and is sometimes seen stealing some from humans, and she is also fond of alcohol. In the mangas, she's always tripping over something – even over nothing. Fairies are generally considered to have a quite different mindset compared to humans due to their unique nature. However, Luna's apparently depicted a bit different to the usual fairies: She tends to read books and newspapers, and has a habit of skeptical and rather logical thinking. Her common sense is more closer to humans in this regard. As result, the "stupid" she's commonly associated with is a lack of practical smarts, not book knowledge.

Luna is able to mute all the sounds around her. It is self-styled as "the ultimate fairy weapon in hide-and-seek". In hide-and-seek, it might seem that her ability is weaker than Sunny Milk or Star Sapphire – but, just like Sunny who manipulates vision, it is an ability suited for mischief, and it is not simply a specified range, and as she is able to consciously mute only a specified sound, it is very useful. However, since she also uses this ability even when it isn't necessary to mute sound, there are also instances of appealing for existence. Luna, much like her partners, is not very powerful. Her power when used in tandem with Sunny's power to refract light, they can be a powerful stealthy pair. Luna, much like Sunny Milk, gets weaker when her natural element, the moon, isn't present in the sky.

In chapter 1 of Strange and Bright Nature Deity, it was said "she is not able to erase anything other than sound, so it is the most disadvantageous," but however it is conceived, Star Sapphire who can't grasp anything other than position is more disadvantageous. Also in the manga, the ability was changed to "ability to manipulate moonlight", but the substance of the ability has not changed. Different from Sunny, there has not been a depiction where she manipulated moonlight.

Also, by bathing in moonlight, she is able to quickly recover her wounds. Since she receives the influence of moonlight, the condition of the moon gives forth the quality of her ability.

Furthermore, the three fairies' abilities have no effect under Reisen Udongein Inaba's ability to manipulate wavelengths. As opposed to the fairies who manipulate wavelengths in a very limited manner, it can be said that Reisen manipulates wavelengths in a more comprehensive manner.

Previously upon meeting Yukari Yakumo, she received advice regarding the true nature of the power of the "light of the moon", but due to tension, she did not hear anything but half of the talk, and for some reason she forgot (or was made to forget) the contents of the talk. Because of that, she probably wants to meet again the youkai she met at that time – Yukari; in actuality, she met her several times afterwards. Yukari said "the power of the light of the moon is even superior to the light of the sun. A peaceful power, the colour of the heart, sorrows, the light of the moon is a light that does not bewilder anything. Come now, wake up. Why do you think you are treated well by the other light of the sun and the light of the stars?"

According to her fortune slip in Whispered Oracle of Hakurei Shrine, her ability is based off of the existence of the Sea of Tranquility, written literally as 'Sea of Quiet/Silence' (静かの海) in Japanese.

Luna often plays pranks on humans including Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame. She and her other two partners moved from her residence on top a tree, supposedly in the Forest of Magic, to a newer tree behind the Hakurei Shrine.

Luna Child's depiction remains the same throughout her presence in the series, although she receives a few minor clothing alterations. In Eastern and Little Nature Deity, Luna has red eyes and yellow hair, arranged into six princess curls on both sides of her head, as well as a pair of wings. She wears a white and black dress having long sleeves and a few black ribbons at the front of her dress, along with a big one below her neck and an even bigger one in her back. She also has a white shoulder cloth having black outlines, and a white beret with black ribbons attached on its sides. She wears a pair of slippers as well. When reading books, she's sometimes depicted with reading glasses.

In Strange and Bright Nature Deity, Luna's long sleeves are now short and puffy. In Great Fairy Wars, the lunar cycle is represented at the bottom of Luna's dress, although in her later appearances in Strange and Bright Nature Deity and Oriental Sacred Place, it isn't present.

Like other fairies, she is short.

Below show information about Star Sapphire:

Character information (Star Sapphire):

  • Name: Star Sapphire
  • Gender: female
  • Species: fairy, non-human
  • Friends: Cirno, Sunny Milk, Luna Child
  • Personality: prankster, smart

Character wiki (Star Sapphire):

Star is often described as having more common sense than other fairies, being calmer, a bit wiser, often avoiding fights, letting her two partners do all the hard work for her, and making her getaway while her friends are busted in their pranks. As with her two other partners, she is rather fond of alcohol. Unlike her partners, she has the most bizarre sense of perception. Sometimes, when they see things that would cause Sunny and Luna to panic, such as an imminent incident or a mountain of human skulls, Star seems to find it fun and exciting.

Just as bizarre are also her interests, which include examining strange rocks, or keeping a mushroom bonsai tree as a hobby. Keeping to her namesake, she loves all things star related such as the Star Spangled Banner and Tanabata.

Like a radar, she is able to sense things that exist from afar. In Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, it became "moving things", but according to her speech and conduct as well as Shanghai Alice Correspondence Three Fairies Version, she is "only able to know moving things, and unrelated to being among that, living things" (for living things, she isn't able to make distinctions other than size). That said, she was able to detect Eternity when she was hibernating. Star, much like her partners, isn't very powerful. Her power allows her to know when trouble is coming or when to act during a prank. Unlike her two partners, her power does not weaken at any time, as stars are always present in the sky, even during the day.

There hasn't been a depiction of concretely what range she is able to grasp things, but if she isn't preoccupied with other things, it seems that she's able to grasp a reasonably wide range, but it also seems that if there are a very large number of living things, then the important information gets buried. Also, she wasn't able to recognise Reisen Udongein Inaba who was invoking her own ability.

There's hardly any instance where this ability caused direct damage in mischief, but as it's support orientated, in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, it was even written that "when she is on observation duty, she can be a threat." If Star were not to slack off, then the three fairies' pranks would become quite nasty.

As for recovery from injury – different from Sunny Milk and Luna Child's case – she isn't affected at all by the weather and constantly recovers at ease. As for how she slacks off, different from the other youkai and shinigami who are beaten, she uses her ability and skillfully slacks off.

Star often plays pranks on humans including Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame. She and her other two partners moved from her residence on top a tree, supposedly in the Forest of Magic, to a newer tree behind the Hakurei Shrine.

Star's appearance goes through some changes throughout the series. At first, in Eastern and Little Nature Deity, she's described having long dark brown hair, a blue ribbon attached to it, and gray eyes, as well as butterfly-shaped wings. She wears a white and blue dress, the top part being mostly white, having a blue shoulder cloth, and the bottom part being blue. She has long sleeves and a blue piece of cloth attached around her waist, attaching as a ribbon in her back. She also wears boots.

From Strange and Bright Nature Deity onward, Star's hair is brown, and her eyes are now yellow. She wears a frilly blue dress, having a white shoulder cloth and white long sleeves. She also has a small blue string attached as a ribbon at neck-level. In Great Fairy Wars, her dress is depicted as having stars on it, but these don't appear in her later appearances in Strange and Bright Nature Deity or Oriental Sacred Place.

Like other fairies, she is short.

Below show information about Sugar Satellite:

Character information (Sugar Satellite):

  • Name: Sugar Satellite
  • Gender: female
  • Species: fairy, non-human
  • Friends: none (doesn't knows others well)
  • Personality: cheerful, young, callow, mean, curious

Character wiki (Sugar Satellite):

Sugar was born as a fairy by accidental causes. A normal natural process happened when Sunny Milk said jokingly "the 4th of the three youkai of light" at some time. Because Sunny is part of the Three Fairies of Light, Sugar was not born in a different way as the three fairies, where she looks like a child who likes to cause mischief, just like what the three fairies do. The specific way Sugar was born is complex and unknown. During the time, she wanted to cause mischief and came across the three fairies. She saw them having a danmaku fight with Cirno and they are the first other fairies she saw in her life. She got interested and decided to approach the group. What happens next is unknown.

Sugar loves to cause mischief and pranks, but due to being newly born, she lacks experience of pranks and can't pull them off. So due to this, she relies on her ability (just like any other fairy) since she's rather callow. Compared to other fairies, she acts the most childish of them, fitting her being newer. She is curious, cheerful, and playful, a basic behavior of a fairy, but she is also shown to a have quite a mean streak, even if unintentional, which may come out as rude. She will mimic the behaviors of other fairies, since she doesn't have a fully developed personality, so she mimics what happens around herself.

Sugar loves sweets, especially filled cookies, and is always distracted by them whenever she sees one around. She also struggles to walk, since she spends most of her time walking, which makes her vulnerable to complex structures like stairs.

Sugar has the ability to manipulate one's perception at her own will. She uses it for pranks when someone comes nearby to make them have a different feeling in the atmosphere, or to make them feel that a certain object was around from the beginning. it is completely harmless to humans, but if used around places known for youkai, humans will start to feel fear. There's one weakness to this ability, and that weakness is that it cannot remove foot sounds or forms of any kind, so once you feel something's wrong and you turn around, you'll see Sugar with a surprised look on her face, and her prank fails.

Sugar is a short humanoid with purple eyes, gray hair, and crescent moon-shaped wings with orbs between them. For attire, Sugar wears a violet, halo-like ring around her head (positioned around her forehead), with a violet flower on it and yellow ribbon, gray dress with yellow buttons, long white sleeves (which cover her hands), brown shoes. Just like how the Three Fairies of Light are based on light, with Sunny Milk been based on the sun, Luna Child based on the moon, and Star Sapphire based on stars, Sugar is based on natural satellites.

Sugar Satellite commonly uses purple, spherical danmaku in ring-like formations, usually moving pretty slowly. These rings usually have parts lacking danmaku (aka gaps), which allow them to be entire from the inside and outside, since the inside is completely hollow usually. Sugar Satellite is also known for firing pretty slowly, but hitting hard.

Below show information about Sunny Milk:

Character information (Sunny Milk):

  • Name: Sunny Milk
  • Gender: female
  • Species: fairy, non-human
  • Friends: Cirno, Luna Child, Star Sapphire
  • Personality: prankster, leader

Character wiki (Sunny Milk):

Sunny is described as energetic and very curious. She also enjoys eavesdropping on others for things that might interest her, like clues for a treasure hunt. She is also fond of delicious foods and any kind of liquor. True to her namesake, she is much happier during clear weather whereby the sun is out. She occupies the highest level of house accordingly to receive the morning sunshine. Sunny often oversleeps late into the morning.

While she is reported to be considerably weak, her power allows her to change the refraction of light, making her able to hide herself or change how an environment looks. In Strange and Bright Nature Deity, this name was changed to "manipulating sunlight". It is the same as being able to hide herself and make herself invisible. It is a fairy-like ability, mainly used in mischief, but her power gets weaker when the sun is not present, and rain gives away her illusions.

The usage method of this ability has been confirmed to be as followed; by refracting light, she was able to make herself and others unable to be seen, give off light, bend the light of the sun & shine on shadows, and reflect danmaku that was made of light – she wasn't able to bounce back danmaku other than light. In Visionary Fairies in Shrine, while inside her home, she bent light to see how the front door looked like from outside. Also followed in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense; she was able to refract light and change the scenery, make humans lost in the forest, and upon basking in the sun, was especially quick to recover her wounds; this may be due to the power of the sun. She can also accumulate sunlight inside herself, and release it in another moment. The power of the released light can be strong enough to blind people, generate considerable heat, and even start fires.

As a lot of danmaku consists in light bullets, Sunny's ability is very useful in combat. She has already been seen surprising Yukari Yakumo and Okina Matara by deflecting their bullets.

Sunny often plays pranks on humans including Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame. She and her other two partners moved from her residence on top a tree, supposedly in the Forest of Magic, to a newer tree behind the Hakurei Shrine.

Sunny Milk's depiction stayed the same in the entirety of her presence in the series bar for minor changes to her clothes. In Eastern and Little Nature Deity, she has short ginger hair braided at the sides of her head with red ribbons, blue eyes, as well as a pair of wings. She wears a red and white dress with long sleeves and frills, along with a pink ribbon attached at the top of the dress. She also wears red shoes, as well as a maid headband between her braids.

In Strange and Bright Nature Deity, her dress gains additional details; the middle of her sleeves now have red ribbons attached to them, the end of her sleeves now have a red line, and the bottom of her dress now have a white line. Her pink ribbon is changed for a yellow neckerchief and her shoes are now black and white.

Like other fairies, she is short.
