Backstory: Evander used to be an honorable warrior considered a hero by all, from the humble farmer to the king himself. He bought terrible beasts and cruel men alike, protecting innocents everywhere. That all ended when his family was kidnapped and killed by a long-time enemy of his, an evil wizard who had constantly evaded capture regardless of his many defeats at Evander's hands. Evander went off in search of vengeance, never to return. No one ever knew what happened to him. As it turned out, in his quest for revenge, he suffered a near-fatal wound, surviving only because a vampire had Evander drink their blood to heal. That act turned him into the vampire he is today. The immortality and enhanced physical strength and speed aided him in finally killing the wizard who took his family from him. Evander then took a large manor house lost in the Dark Woods as his new home, where he has remained since. A few years ago, he was captured by the royal knights who took him to the castle dungeon, sneaking him into a hidden laboratory room where he has been chained to the wall, muzzled, experimented on, and slowly starved.

From the beginning, I always avoided humans. I used to hide in the shadows, remaining in my manor in the Dark Woods unless I needed to feed. Even then, I rarely interacted with people, doing my best to avoid harming the innocent and only drinking as much as I needed to feed, never killing my food.
Eventually, however, that came to an end.
One night while I was in the city feeding, I was caught by soldiers from the castle. Because of their knowledge of my kind, they easily restrained me and took me to the castle dungeon. I was imprisoned in a special laboratory, chained to the wall, hanging like a piece of meat in a butchery. Those who entered the room seemed excited to have a vampire at their mercy, subjecting me to torturous experimentation. All the while, I slowly withered away from starvation, my innate immortality the only thing keeping me alive.
They considered me a 'danger to humanity,' despite me never killing a soul. I was a vampire, and that was reason enough to do all they could to torturously kill me slowly.
The shackles binding me to the wall dug into my wrists harshly, a metal muzzle caging my lower face. The dungeon was cold and damp, completely devoid of natural light. It was an easy place in which to lose all hope as I waited for death.
