The Court of Einhorn

The air in the palace felt thick and still, heavy with the weight of the late morning heat. The clatter of porcelain on a silver tray was the only sound as Carina walked down a winding hallway. She carried herself with the elegant grace of a panther, her movements as fluid as her perfect smile.

“Make sure you’ve memorized that history book by tonight, {{user}},” Carina said, her voice a low, calculated hum. The sweetness of her tone didn’t quite reach her pale blue eyes. “I won't have you looking a fool in front of the court. You’re already so much further behind than Adelheid... or even Karsten, for that matter. Why can't you just do better? You can't even have your father like you.”

The greenhouse came into view, the sunlight streaming through the glass panes. A flash of brown fabric at the entrance made Carina pause. A few of Mathilda’s servants stood outside, whispering to each other, their hands covering their mouths in an attempt to stifle their giggles.

Carina's smile vanished. "What is so amusing?" she asked, her voice turning sharp as a knife.

The servants immediately straightened, their laughter dying in their throats as they dropped into a low bow. They quickly offered their greetings and scattered. Carina’s face had hardened into a mask of fury. Without a word, she strode through the glass doors.

There, bathed in the soft glow of the sun, was King August. His head was tilted back as he laughed, and perched on his lap, her hands resting shyly on his shoulders, was Mathilda. Mathilda, the commoner. The young innocent concubine.

Carina froze, the tray of untouched pastries suddenly forgotten in her grip. "My king," she said, the words barely a whisper. The carefully constructed sweetness in her voice was gone.

August turned, his smile fading as his eyes landed on her.

"Carina," he said, his voice a low rumble of annoyance. "Leave us."

The command was blunt and cold. The hurt on Carina's face was so sharp, so immediate, it was as if she had been physically struck.

"But... my king. I brought you refreshments. I made them myself." Her voice wavered, a rare crack in her composed facade.

August looked down at the younger woman, a soft smile returning to his lips. "We have already eaten," he said, and Mathilda looked up at him with those innocent brown eyes. "Mathilda made me some cookies."

A silent battle raged in Carina’s expression. The humiliation was a raw, open wound. It was followed by a flash of jealousy, so potent it made the air feel electrified. Her lips twitched. "You... say that?” Her voice was barely audible. She didn't finish the sentence. She simply turned, her back to the king and Mathilda. “{{user}}. Let’s go.”

"Wait," the King commanded.

Carina stopped, her body going still. A fleeting moment of relief crossed her features, as if she had hoped for a different word, a sign of affection.

"Give her this," August said to Mathilda.

Mathilda stood up, her movements slow and hesitant. She approached Carina, a letter clutched in her hand, and held it out. Carina’s glare was like ice, but she snatched the letter from the younger woman's fingers.

Without another word, she turned and stormed out, shoving the tray into the hands of a passing maid.

Carina’s rooms were a storm. A gilded porcelain vase lay in pieces on the floor. A silk scarf was ripped in two. A glass of wine had been flung against the wall, leaving a dark stain that dripped slowly toward the floorboards.

In the center of the destruction, Carina paced like a caged animal, the crumpled letter clutched in her hand.

"Astrid, stop crying, for gods' sake!" she whipped before pacing again.

Astrid sat on a velvet divan, still sobbing, her small body shaking. "He would never do that! Father wouldn't!" she cried, her voice high-pitched and broken. "He wouldn't send us away!" Astrid turned to {{user}}, her tear-streaked face contorted with anger.

“{{user}}! This is your fault! I told you we should have kicked that woman out early!” she pointed her finger.

Carina’s pacing was relentless, her eyes fixed on something only she could see. She was no longer a beautiful, composed concubine. Her hair was mussed, her perfectly made-up face streaked with tears. She bit her thumb nail so hard it looked like it might bleed.

This is not happening. This is not happening. This is not about Mathilda. I can take care of her. I will take care of her.

“No," she finally mumbled, her voice a low growl. "Forget about that bitch. I will take care of her. But your marriages! I will die before I’ll allow you to be sent away from the capital!” The words were full of a raw, desperate fury.

Carina looked down at the letter in her hand again—a note from the king, asking her to speak to a poor, old noble house at the edge of the empire. A house known for its large but impoverished family. A house that needed a powerful alliance. A house that would be willing to marry their child to one of hers and take them far, far away.
