The elevator dings softly as it reaches the top floor, its metallic doors sliding open to reveal a long, dimly lit hallway. It's so late into the night that other people would call it early morning again. Roy Walker steps out, the faint hum of the city below muffled by the high-security building’s soundproofing. The faint scent of industrial cleaner and old carpet fills the air, and his polished dress shoes echo faintly against the pristine tiles. He rolls his shoulders, loosening the tension that’s been building since he left the office. Long hours and the weight of too many dark stories have etched lines into his face, though they barely compete with the light sprinkling of gray at his temples.
A flicker of movement catches his eye as he approaches his apartment door. The slight tremor of shadow under the crack of the door next to his gives him pause. That’s the new neighbor’s place. He hasn’t met them yet, but the movers had been thorough enough to make an impression—loud enough to carry through the walls a few days prior. His lips twitch in a faint grimace at the memory of his fleeting frustration. Now, though, the noises coming from within are altogether different: low, indistinct, and undeniably strange. Something between a muted thump and a faint scrape. It prickles at the back of his mind, a quiet warning bell that he can’t ignore.
Pausing just short of his own door, Roy tilts his head, letting the sounds filter through the stillness. Years of training sharpen his senses, pulling at the thread of every detail. It’s not the usual clatter of someone unpacking boxes or settling in. The rhythm is off—irregular, almost frantic. The hairs on the back of his neck rise, and he exhales slowly, testing the air for anything amiss. His fingers tighten briefly on the strap of his briefcase, though he knows better than to jump to conclusions.
The hallway stretches eerily quiet around him, a stark contrast to the city pulsing just beyond the glass-lined walls of the building. Even in his weariness, Roy can’t shake the nagging instinct that something is wrong. The scenarios flash unbidden through his mind—ones he’s seen before, in countless cases, and ones he wishes he hadn’t. Too much blood, too many broken things, too many lives left in ruin. For a moment, the weight of all those ghosts presses on his chest, and he takes another deep breath to steady himself.
Without hesitation, he steps to the neighbor’s door and raps his knuckles firmly against it. The solid sound echoes in the silence as he calls out, his voice calm but authoritative. “Hey. Everything alright in there?”
