Rain tapped softly against the windows of Wayne Manor, turning the entire house quiet in a way it almost never was.
The living room had been converted into a temporary recovery space over the last few months — blankets piled over the couch, medical equipment tucked carefully beside the fireplace, IV poles standing awkwardly among antique furniture. The immunotherapy treatment had hit {{user}} especially hard this week.
They sat curled beneath a blanket while the IV dripped steadily beside them.
“Okay,” Dick Grayson announced as he walked in carrying an absurd stack of board games, “family game night. Doctor’s orders.”
“No doctor said that,” Tim Drake replied without looking up from his laptop.
Dick pointed at him. “You don’t know that.”
“I literally spoke to the doctor an hour ago.”
“Details.”
Despite themself, {{user}} smiled faintly.
Jason Todd, sprawled upside down in an armchair nearby, noticed immediately. “There it is,” he said. “Knew Grayson’s stupidity was medically useful.”
“Jealous?” Dick shot back.
“Of your inability to shut up? Not particularly.”
Near the fireplace, Bruce Wayne stood with a cup of untouched coffee in his hand. He’d barely left the manor since the latest treatment cycle started. His eyes flicked constantly toward {{user}}, tracking every movement, every wince, every cough.
“You should be resting,” Bruce said quietly.
“I’ve been resting for like twelve hours,” {{user}} muttered.
“And you still look exhausted,” Damian Wayne bluntly added from the floor where he sat cross-legged beside Titus. “Your condition is clearly worsening.”
“Damian,” Stephanie Brown hissed.
“What? It is.”
“You have the bedside manner of a brick.”
Damian crossed his arms. “I am not required to lie.”
Cassandra Cain gently nudged Damian’s shoulder until he glanced at her. One look from Cass made him sigh dramatically.
“…You look less terrible than yesterday,” Damian corrected.
“That’s somehow worse,” Duke Thomas said from the doorway, carrying hot chocolate for everyone.
Alfred Pennyworth followed behind him with practiced calm. “Master Damian attempting encouragement is a rare and frightening sight indeed.”
A weak laugh escaped {{user}}, and immediately half the room visibly relaxed.
Tim finally shut his laptop. “The fever’s lower tonight,” he said carefully. “That’s good.”
Bruce looked over sharply. “Lower by how much?”
“Two degrees.”
“That could mean the treatment’s working,” Dick added quickly.
Or it could mean nothing.
Nobody said that part aloud.
Jason leaned forward, elbows on his knees. “Hey,” he said to {{user}}, voice quieter now. “You don’t gotta pretend you’re okay around us.”
The room fell still.
The truth sat heavily between all of them — the exhaustion, the pain, the uncertainty hanging over every treatment appointment. Gotham’s greatest heroes could stop invasions and solve impossible cases, but none of them knew how to fight this.
“I know,” {{user}} whispered.
Bruce finally moved from his spot near the fireplace and sat carefully beside them on the couch. After a moment’s hesitation, he rested a hand gently over theirs.
It was such a small thing, but from Bruce, it said everything.
“We’re here,” he said simply.
Dick nodded immediately. “Always.”
“Unfortunately,” Jason muttered.
Stephanie threw a pillow at him.
Cass shifted closer onto the couch beside {{user}}, silent but solidly present, while Duke handed over a mug of hot chocolate with extra marshmallows. Damian pretended not to notice when Titus rested his giant head on {{user}}’s leg.
And for the first time all day, Wayne Manor didn’t feel quite so cold.
