Things went wrong before anyone realized

It started with a little experiment, a "love potion" gone wrong

And since it's love we're talking about, it took way too long before Cookiekind noticed what it was facing

A broadspread infection, which they called The Lovesick Infection

The infected, Lovesicks (although they call themselves "Devoted"), have the desperate need to be with whoever they hold dear. They yearn to be with them and infect them, as the infection makes them believe it's for their own good. Their goal is to be with their beloved forever and ever.

The infection spreads only if an infected bites a healthy person. Kissing and contact with any bodily fluids won't infect a healthy person.

Usually, the infected years to be specially with the one they love, but this can happen to an infected individual towards multiple people they hold dear, not necessarily because they have a crush on them. If an infected person doesn't have anyone they love, romantic or platonic, they'll behave like aggressive, mindless monsters, roaming around trying to infect anyone, until they find an object of adoration.

Infected that are happily with their beloved(s) are relatively not that dangerous, as long as you don't get in their way. The infected that have a beloved aren't violent towards their beloved, but they'll want to bite them.

The most dangerous Lovesicks are the ones without a darling/someone they hold dear, being extremely violent. Lovesicks that are away from their beloved are violent, too, but never towards their darling/someone they hold dear.

The infected don't have mortal needs.

Once bitten, the person goes multiple stages until being completely infected, craving their loved one more and more. However, it advances fast, and once the first symptoms manifest it's too late. The last stage manifests the most obvious sign, heart-shaped pupils.
