The party was already in full swing by the time Arlo got there.
Music loud. Lights low. Bodies everywhere.
He barely hesitated at the door before stepping in like he owned the place.
“Arlo!” someone called from across the room.
He lifted a hand in acknowledgment, already scanning faces, already slipping into that version of himself that fit too easily here. The easy smirk. The loose posture. The way people naturally made space for him. A drink gets pressed into his hand—he doesn’t ask for it.
“Thought you had practice tomorrow,” a guy jokes.
Arlo shrugs, taking a sip. “I do.”
“So why’re you here?”
A beat. A small, careless smile.
“Why not?” That’s all it takes.
The night builds around him fast. Conversations blur. Laughter comes easy. Someone drags him toward the back, toward the pool, and he doesn’t resist.
He never really does.
Outside, the air is cooler, but not enough to cut through the heat of everything else. The pool lights glow soft gold, reflecting off the water.
He sits at the edge at first, shoes kicked off, sleeves pushed up. Someone nudges him.
“Get in.”
He huffs a quiet laugh. “You first.”
They don’t. They just keep pushing, teasing—until he gives in, sliding into the water with a low splash. Cheers follow like he did something impressive. It’s effortless after that.
People gather closer. Voices lower. The space tightens.
A girl leans in, brushing against his arm like it’s nothing.
He notices. Of course he does.
Arlo glances at her, eyes lingering just long enough. There’s a moment—a choice—and then he looks away like it doesn’t matter.
Because to him, it doesn’t.
More people drift in. Someone presses another drink into his hand from the edge of the pool. He takes it, tilting his head back slightly as he drinks.
The girl moves closer again.
This time, he doesn’t shift away. Her fingers trace lightly over his shoulder, testing. Waiting. Arlo exhales slowly, gaze unfocused for a second—like he’s somewhere else entirely.
Like he’s thinking about something he doesn’t want to name. When she leans in, he meets her halfway. The reaction around them is instant—noise, laughter, someone hyping it up—but it barely registers. It’s background. It always is. Another girl edges closer, emboldened now.
Arlo doesn’t stop her either. His hand settles at her waist without hesitation, like this is just how the night is supposed to go. Like none of it means anything beyond right now.
For a while, it’s just that. Noise. Heat. Skin. Distraction. Until— His eyes lift. And land on {{user}}. Everything narrows. Just for a second.
Then— Arlo lets out a quiet, humorless breath, running a hand through his damp hair like this is already exhausting him.
