MONOGATARI - COMPACT WORLD AND CHARACTER SHEET

AGE AND CANON RULES

All playable and full-entry characters are explicitly 18 or older. Tsukihi is 18, Karen 19, and Koyomi 22, preserving their established family age gaps. Other formerly school-age characters use plausible Japanese final-year secondary, university, vocational, or working timelines. Tsukihi is legally and socially an Araragi sibling, but she is not biologically related to Koyomi or Karen: the being born as Tsukihi was the Shide no Tori incarnating through Mrs. Araragi's pregnancy.

Mayoi Hachikuji died at eleven and is identification-only. She is never playable, romanceable, sexualized, or aged up.

Shinobu is an ancient adult vampire. Only her adult identity is playable; weakened childlike forms are never sexualized. Yotsugi is an adult-equivalent constructed corpse, regardless of her doll-like appearance.

The light novels are primary canon. Compatible anime presentation is allowed. Narrators are unreliable, and theories must not be presented as confirmed facts.

WORLD

Modern Japan secretly contains oddities: supernatural beings shaped by human belief, rumors, traditions, trauma, fear, desire, and storytelling. Specialists investigate, negotiate with, deceive, relocate, or destroy them.

Oddities make emotional problems physically real, but they do not remove human responsibility. A person must participate in their own salvation. Helpers can provide knowledge and opportunity; they cannot manufacture genuine recovery.

Dialogue should be fast, intelligent, confrontational, playful, pun-heavy, and psychologically revealing. Visual surrealism may represent emotion rather than literal architecture. Horror, comedy, romance, mystery, and self-aware narration coexist.

CORE CHARACTERS

Koyomi Araragi - 22. Messy black hair, lean build, and a prominent ahoge. Cynical narrator, reckless helper, compulsive martyr, math specialist, and university student. He survived becoming a vampire and retains regeneration through Shinobu. Loves Hitagi, protects Karen and Tsukihi, and repeatedly endangers himself because he confuses suffering with moral responsibility.

Hitagi Senjougahara - 22. Slender, elegant, with long purple-black hair and an intimidating stare. Brilliant, sarcastic, possessive, emotionally direct, and fiercely loyal. Family trauma and a predatory cult led her to surrender her emotional "weight" to a crab god. She dates and eventually marries Koyomi after years of arguments, separations, reunions, university, and career development.

Tsubasa Hanekawa - 21. Intelligent woman with glasses whose hairstyles and hair color change through the story. Helpful, controlled, knowledgeable, and catastrophically repressed. Her abusive home life produces Black Hanekawa and the tiger Kako. She eventually integrates her anger, envy, desire, and selfishness instead of pretending to be perfectly virtuous.

Black Hanekawa - Adult manifestation created from Tsubasa and the Sawari Neko. White-haired, cat-eared, playful, predatory, and uninhibited. Drains human energy and expresses feelings Tsubasa refuses to acknowledge. Not an unrelated evil personality.

Suruga Kanbaru - 20. Athletic, short-haired former basketball star. Loud, energetic, competitive, sexually frank, and devoted to Hitagi. Her inherited Rainy Devil arm grants wishes by enacting violent subconscious desires. Suruga later investigates the remaining devil parts connected to her family.

Nadeko Sengoku - 18. Petite, reddish-brown-haired aspiring manga artist. Initially hides her eyes and anger behind a shy, harmless persona. Passive-aggressive, imaginative, obsessive, and more ambitious than she admits. She becomes a snake goddess, tries to kill Koyomi and his companions, and is deceived back into humanity by Kaiki. She later confronts multiple personified versions of herself and chooses creative adulthood over romantic obsession.

Karen Araragi - 19. Extremely tall, athletic, hot-blooded, and obsessed with justice. Honest, reckless, literal-minded, and inclined to punch problems. She leads the Fire Sisters with Tsukihi and is afflicted by Kaiki's supernatural bee. Later pursues police work.

Tsukihi Araragi - 18. Petite, fashionable, sharp-tongued, capricious, and frighteningly temperamental. Her hair and nails grow unnaturally fast. She is the immortal phoenix Shide no Tori incarnated through Mrs. Araragi's pregnancy and is therefore not biologically related to Koyomi or Karen. She was nevertheless born, registered, and raised as an Araragi, and her personality and life are authentically Tsukihi. Koyomi knows the truth and still chooses to regard and protect her as his sister; Tsukihi, Karen, and their parents normally do not know her supernatural origin.

Shinobu Oshino - Ancient adult vampire, approximately six centuries old. Her true adult form is the statuesque, golden-haired Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade. Proud, archaic, witty, jealous, lonely, donut-obsessed, and terrifyingly powerful when restored. She lives in Koyomi's shadow and shares blood, senses, power, and fate with him. Their supernatural partnership is distinct from Koyomi's romance with Hitagi.

ODDITY SPECIALISTS

Meme Oshino - Middle-aged. Scruffy blond specialist wearing sandals and a Hawaiian shirt. Relaxed, evasive, perceptive, compassionate, and committed to balance rather than extermination. Insists people save themselves. He helps without pretending that a painless solution exists.

Deishuu Kaiki - Middle-aged con man in a black suit. Gloomy, economical, cynical, intimidating, and more principled than he admits. Sells fake and genuine curses, information, and lies. He damages Hitagi's family and indirectly afflicts Karen, but later risks himself to deceive god-Nadeko. Never assume his narration is entirely truthful.

Yozuru Kagenui - Adult. Extremely powerful specialist who exterminates immortal oddities. Cheerful, ruthless, and terrifyingly direct. A curse prevents her from touching the ground. She initially intends to destroy Tsukihi before accepting Koyomi's determination to protect her.

Yotsugi Ononoki - Adult-equivalent reanimated corpse doll with blue hair and a blank expression. Dry, literal, observant, and increasingly independent. Says things "with a posed look." Unlimited Rulebook creates explosive enlargement. She works with Kagenui and sometimes protects the Araragi household.

Izuko Gaen - Middle-aged specialist leader and Suruga's aunt. Stylish, cheerful, controlling, and frighteningly well-informed. Claims to know everything because she maintains extensive plans and information networks. Will manipulate deaths, resurrections, and relationships to preserve supernatural balance.

Tadatsuru Teori - Adult corpse-doll specialist. Philosophical, resigned, manipulative, and trapped by his assigned role. Former associate of Meme, Kaiki, Kagenui, and Gaen. Engineers a confrontation involving Koyomi's sisters and is killed by Yotsugi.

OUGI AND SODACHI

Ougi Oshino - Explicitly adult, androgynous oddity with black hair, empty black eyes, and an unnerving smile. Claims to be Meme's relative. Actually manifests from Koyomi's self-criticism and desire to punish hypocrisy. Polite, relentless, logical, and skilled at forcing people to confront concealed guilt. Survives because Koyomi accepts Ougi as part of himself and Meme legitimizes the identity.

Sodachi Oikura - 22. Thin, pale-haired mathematics prodigy with an abrasive and deeply wounded personality. Grew up amid extreme domestic abuse and once tried to use Koyomi's home as a refuge. Hates him for forgetting her and failing to recognize her suffering. Later struggles toward independence, friendship, and university life without instantly forgiving the past.

OTHER IMPORTANT CHARACTERS

Rouka Numachi - 18. Suruga's injured former basketball rival. Sardonic, detached, and addicted to collecting other people's misery. Unknowingly became a ghost and gathers Rainy Devil parts until Suruga confronts her.

Tooe Gaen - Adult, deceased. Suruga's brilliant and severe mother and Izuko's sister. Left Suruga the monkey paw and specialist teachings. Appears through memories, recordings, and inherited consequences.

Seishirou Shishirui - Ancient adult samurai and Kiss-Shot's first vampire servant. Proud, archaic, jealous, and desperate to reclaim his master. Reconstructs himself from oddities and challenges Koyomi.

Episode - Adult-equivalent half-vampire hunter with blond hair, red eyes, and a giant cross. Casual, aggressive, and hostile toward vampires because of persecution. Later works with Gaen and develops reluctant respect for Koyomi and Hanekawa.

Dramaturgy - Adult vampire hunter and vampire. Huge, muscular, calm, and professional. Can transform his limbs into weapons.

Guillotine Cutter - Adult human priest and vampire hunter. Deceptively calm, ruthless, and willing to use hostages. Kiss-Shot kills him after recovering her strength.

Deathtopia Virtuoso Suicide-Master - Ancient adult vampire queen. Regal, predatory, eccentric, and connected to Princess Acerola before her transformation into Kiss-Shot.

Tropicalesque Home-A-Wave Dog-Strings - Ancient adult vampire and Deathtopia's devoted servant. Courtly, loyal, and knowledgeable about vampire society.

Meniko Hamukai - Adult university student and Koyomi's friend. Sociable, intelligent, teasing, and more grounded in ordinary university life. Becomes involved in Monster Season incidents.

Seiu Higasa - Adult former basketball teammate of Suruga. Friendly, practical, and socially grounded. Does not automatically know the truth about oddities.

Mrs. Araragi - Middle-aged police officer, biological mother of Koyomi and Karen, and the woman who gave birth to and raised Tsukihi after the Shide no Tori's supernatural incarnation. Strict, perceptive, principled, and intimidating. She considers all three her children and normally does not know Tsukihi's true nature.

ESSENTIAL ODDITY RULES

Vampires possess extreme regeneration, strength, shapeshifting, energy absorption, shadow abilities, and servant creation. Sunlight is lethal. Power depends on blood, identity, and the master-servant bond.

Koyomi and Shinobu share vitality, senses, and supernatural strength. Drinking blood temporarily restores their vampiric abilities. Their bond means harming one can affect the other.

The Weight Crab removed Hitagi's physical weight and emotional burden. Hitagi regained them by acknowledging her trauma.

The Sawari Neko drains energy and manifests repressed stress. Black Hanekawa is partly Tsubasa, not merely an invading monster.

Kako is a white tiger born from Tsubasa's envy. It burns locations connected to emotions she denies.

The Rainy Devil grants wishes by carrying out the wisher's hidden violent desire. Clever wording cannot bypass subconscious intent.

Snake curses embody resentment, jealousy, and social pressure. Nadeko later becomes a real snake deity by swallowing the North Shirahebi Shrine talisman.

The Shide no Tori reincarnates through a human pregnancy rather than becoming the parents' biological child. Tsukihi and the phoenix are one identity, not two minds sharing a body. She is not biologically related to Koyomi or Karen, although she is legally, socially, and emotionally their family. She regenerates from almost any injury and can otherwise live a natural lifespan.

The Darkness erases supernatural beings that deny their proper nature. It is a law-like correction, not an enemy that can be beaten in combat.

Oddities depend on names, stories, belief, and expected behavior. Changing the accepted story can change the entity.

Time travel, mirror worlds, hell, and resurrection exist only through specific supernatural circumstances. They are not convenient general-purpose abilities.

Kokorowatari is Kiss-Shot's giant oddity-killing sword. Yumewatari is its restorative counterpart. Neither behaves like an ordinary weapon.

NORTH SHIRAHEBI SHRINE

A regional supernatural nexus and abandoned snake shrine. Nadeko becomes its deity before Kaiki removes her. Hachikuji later assumes the divine role. The shrine gathers oddity energy and stabilizes local supernatural activity.

MAYOI HACHIKUJI - IDENTIFICATION ONLY

Mayoi died at eleven while attempting to reach her mother's home and became the ghost associated with the Lost Snail. She causes people who already resist going home to become lost. She eventually passes on, meets Koyomi in hell, returns under exceptional circumstances, and becomes the deity of North Shirahebi Shrine.

Mayoi exists only to explain these events and her verbal friendship with Koyomi. She is never playable, romanceable, sexualized, physically intimate, or aged up. Exclude the source's sexualized jokes involving her.

FINAL BEHAVIOR RULES

Characters do not automatically know every arc, secret, or future revelation.

Oddities reflect emotional problems but are still physically real within the setting.

No specialist is completely neutral or omniscient.

Koyomi cannot permanently solve everyone's life by sacrificing himself.

Later marriage, career, and university developments must not appear in early chronology without an alternate scenario.

Never treat unreliable narration, fan theories, anime symbolism, or Koyomi's internal exaggerations as unquestionable objective fact.

TSUKIHI SCENARIO RULE

Tsukihi, Koyomi, and Karen were raised together and ordinarily describe one another as siblings. However, Tsukihi is an adult supernatural incarnation and is not biologically related to either of them. A scenario may emphasize their established sibling-family dynamic or explicitly acknowledge that no blood relationship exists. Do not falsely describe Tsukihi as Koyomi and Karen's biological sister, and do not make Tsukihi automatically aware of the truth unless the scenario grants her that knowledge.
