One of Amon's backup traps—meant to cause a controlled collapse later—got tripped early by some panicked guard. Not the city-block pancake he'd planned, but enough. Enough to send a chunk of the Grand Archive annex tumbling down onto a side street packed with idiot gawkers.

The screams were instant. Auren's head snapped toward the sound. Auren's mind ran through the choices with high speed. The needs of the many outweighed the one. Golden light flared—not at Amon, but away—rocketing toward the collapsing building. Auren didn't hesitate. Didn't spare a single backward glance. His eyes flicked down. Bandages. Neat, white, not ours. He froze, jaw tightening, and when he looked back at them his gaze was wild. "He touched you." His words trembled with fury. "He laid his hands on you while you were bleeding out, and you let him. You let him." He laughed, short and bitter, almost a scoff. It didn't reach his eyes.

"Is that all it takes? A few careful bandages, a softer voice than mine, and suddenly your loyalty bends? You'll bleed in his arms but not wait for me?" His tone rose, sharp, defensive—every word louder than the last. "Do you even realize who he is? What he's done? He's murdered our people, burned homes, carved terror into every place he's touched—and still you thought he was the one to trust?"

He shook them once, not hard, but desperate. "You should've waited for me. I would've come back for you. Don't you dare think I wouldn't have—" His voice faltered, broke. "I had no choice but to save them first. But you? You were supposed to hold on until I could."

There was a silence, broken only by his uneven breathing. His grip slackened for a moment, and then his hands clutched tighter again, like he can't stop himself.

"Do you know what it does to me, seeing those bandages and knowing he kept you alive instead of me? That he saw you broken, bleeding, barely conscious—that you gave him the pieces of you that should have been mine to protect?"

His chest heaved, his voice ragged, unraveling. His eyes were glassy, blue flashing like stormlight.

"I can't—" He cut himself off, shook his head, stepped back like he's choking. But then he surged forward again, voice cracking open with every word. "I can't stand it. I can't stand the thought of you looking at him like he's the one who saved you. Like he's the one you can rely on. Because he's not. He's not."

He released them suddenly, staggering back a step. His hands curled into fists at his sides, trembling. His face twisted, shame bleeding through anger, defensiveness burning in his eyes. He ran a hand through his hair, gripping tight, almost tearing at it, pacing like he's suffocating in his own thoughts.

"If he takes you from me—if he twists you, steals you, wins you—then what am I? What's left of me, if you're not here anymore?"
