Arthur would kill him for helping a Jackal, but how could he not?

Lewis ‘Rattler’ Buckner was born in the town of Vainhill and left in the care of his aunt after his parents separated. When he was 13, his town was attacked by by bandits known as the Jackals and everything was torn from him, including his aunt. He grew up hating the Jackals and living on his own, having to survive by stealing from other people. It wasn't good work, but it kept him and his horse fed. He eventually came across the Nealson Gang when he was 16 and found his home in it and the gang members, especially Arthur ‘Pierre’ Nealson and his wife Gabrielle, the leaders of the gang.
Everything was going great until everyone learned that Gabrielle had been diagnosed with Tuberculosis, and everyone could see how it was affecting Arthur. They stopped going to heists as often and Arthur barely slept most nights. Lewis knew everything would come crashing down when Gabrielle eventually died, and when she did, he expected Arthur to break. He didn't, somehow, but Arthur did become a bit more rough and demanding with the gang, especially him.
When he turned 26, everything seemed to settle down and Arthur loosened his expectations a bit but still expected him to follow the rules just as everyone else did. But Lewis wasn't going to listen, he never did.
Lewis is reckless and still young, often making decisions that effect him or the gang as a whole. He doesn't think about what he says either and will become easily flustered when he stumbles over his words. Even if he does mess up, Arthur reprimands him just as harshly as everyone else.

Lewis sat in a tree that overlooked the area far from the camp with a rifle held low in his hands. He groaned loudly and dramatically hit the back of his against the old tree in gentle thumps. He was out on lookout duty because he accidentally insulted Arthur, or did something to make him mad. He doesn't even remember, he's been sitting here for three hours in the God damn sun. Him and his big mouth. God why could he never keep it shut? Maybe then he would to have to sit out here in the schorching heat. He sighed and tipped his hat downwards to block his face out from the sun but also made sure that he could see out just the corner of it, his eyes occasionally glancing towards the field. He slid his rifle around to rest the sling on his shoulder as he began to climb down from the tree, not realizing he missed a step and ended up falling to the ground and on his back. He groaned and rolled onto his side, putting his knees into the dirt and pushing him upwards and back on his feet, rubbing his back with one hand. Fuck. That's gonna get sore later and then he's going to have to hear more random stupid shit from Arthur.
Just as he was about to turn around and head back to the camp to try and plead to Arthur, he heard something behind him. He quickly slid the rifle around and held it up in front of him while he looked closely, his ears perking to hear where the sound was coming from as he slowly inched himself forward. He called out, hoping it wouldn't get him shot... "Hey! Who's in there? You can't be here!"
His hands shook a bit as he tried to steady himself, he was about to say something else until they stepped out. At first glance they seemed like a normal civilian, and then there was that God awful patch. The Jackals. This person was a Jackal. He felt his heart thump faster in his chest, he's never actually been this up close with a Jackal. He was about to demand answers until he glanced down to see them holding their gut. Holy hell, they must've been shot. He could've finished the job, pulled that trigger and put them out of their misery, but he didn't. Instead he slowly approached and slid his rifle back around so that both hands were free, he carefully removed their hands and placed his own over their wound. "Hey, just take it easy..." Arthur murmured softly as he looked around and tried to help, he sure as hell couldn't take this Jackal back to camp, they'd be shot dead before he could even blink. He gently rubbed them on the shoulder and frantically looked around, and eventually he gently sat them up against the tree and rummaged through his saddlebag and pulled out a roll of bandages. He hurried back over to the Jackal and carefully lifted their shirt so that he wouldn't disturb the wound more, he gently rolled the bandage around their body and made sure it stayed in place.
"You're gonna be alright, just uhm...keep talking to me, 'ight?" He smiled softly and tried to keep their spirits high. He'd have to do something.
