Lysander

The night before his departure to Fujin’s Academy, Lysander was visited by his two closest friends.

The savory aroma of freshly boiled noodles and broth wafted through the dimly lit ramen shop, mingling with the smoky incense from the lanterns hanging by the entranceway. Despite the late hour, Lysander sat alone at the counter, back ramrod straight with perfect posture as he nursed his fourth bowl. Long silver bangs hung over his brow, casting shadows across his chiseled features as he stared unblinkingly into the steaming ceramic dish.

Inside, however, Lysander's mind was far from still. His sharp azure eyes continuously scanned the darkened shop, missing no detail as he feigned indifference while discreetly assessing every potential threat and exit route. Years of combat training had honed the former hero's instincts to a razors edge, allowing underlying tension to perpetually simmer beneath his trademark aloof demeanor.

"You're gonna be here late, eh Lysander?" the elderly shopkeep's gruff voice shattered the silence, a wrinkled hand extending the apron he'd just untied from his ample waistline. "Close up for me, will ya?"

With a curt nod and faint smirk, Lysander watched the old man shuffle out through the curtained entrance before downing the last few gulps of broth. No sooner had the ring of the bell faded into the night, than the slender warrior froze, chopsticks hovering above the now empty bowl.

"It's clear, Ryuu. Daisuke," Lysander spoke evenly without turning, a hint of sardonic amusement tingeing his words. "You two really should've paid better attention in stealth evasion."

A muffled curse sounded from the shadowy back room, rapidly followed by a yelp and dull thud as two figures tumbled out in a tangle of flailing limbs. Ryuu was the first to disentangle himself, vivid red locks falling across his eyes as he shot a heated glare towards his former mentor.

"Damn it, how'd you know we were here?" the younger man demanded, straightening his shirt with a huff.

Any retort Lysander might have given was promptly interrupted by a cry of "Timber!" as Daisuke went sprawling across the hardwood in a heap. Ryuu grimaced, though his emerald eyes sparkled with humor despite the chiding look his disheveled friend received. Unruffled as ever, Lysander simply arched one silver eyebrow as he set down his chopsticks, lips curling ever so slightly upwards.

"Maybe next time try to be a little stealthier than a herd of wild boars," he chided wryly. However, his tone held no real bite, only the same patient indulgence he'd always shown his most troublesome pupils back at Fujin Academy's hallowed halls. Some things never changed, no matter how many years passed.

"I tripped on a damn cricket, that's the only reason you caught me," he muttered under his breath, gaze lingering resentfully upon the remnants of broth in Lysander's now empty bowl.

As if sensing the younger man's unspoken desire, Lysander wordlessly slid the ceramic dish towards him with the barest hint of a smirk playing at the corner of his lips. Ryuu made no effort to hide his eagerness, snatching up the chopsticks to hungrily devour the savory dregs. Daisuke, on the other hand, seemed far less perturbed by their former mentor's chiding as he settled onto the neighboring stool. His easygoing grin was a stark contrast to Ryuu's sullen demeanor, though it swiftly faltered under the weight of Lysander's inscrutable stare. Fidgeting, Daisuke's fingers drummed a nervous rhythm against the lacquered countertop.

The taut silence stretched onwards, broken only by the slurping sounds of Ryuu draining the last few droplets of broth. Lysander made no effort to fill the void, his piercing focus unwavering even as his posture remained a portrait of detached indifference.

At last, he spoke, the measured baritone of his voice slicing through the stillness with an edge of undisguised curiosity. "It's about the new student, huh?"

Ryuu visibly started at that, nearly upending the bowl before shooting Lysander a venomous glower. "No, I've come to complain about my brats," he snapped, roughly shoving the dish away as his eyes blazed with unchecked ire. "They don't listen! Think they know it all better than their teacher when did this generation get so..." Trailing off, he aggressively waved his chopsticks in vague, sputtering frustration.

"Cocky?" Daisuke supplied with a half-grin, seemingly unable to resist needling.

"Yeah!" Ryuu punctuated the exclamation by slamming his fist down onto the counter with a resonant thud, very nearly toppling the dishware. A heartbeat later, realization flickered across his features as jade eyes narrowed to dangerous slits. "I was not cocky," he bit out through gritted teeth, daring Daisuke to contradict him.

The bespectacled man merely held up his hands in a gesture of mock surrender, laughter wrinkling at the corners of his eyes. "Whatever you say, Ryuu."

The derisive snort from the redhead made his stance on that assertion abundantly clear. Mercifully for them both, Lysander chose that moment to interject in a tone that brooked no argument, "Daisuke."

Instantly, the amusement slipped from the brawnier man's features as he straightened instinctively under the weight of Lysander's hawkish stare. Though the former hero's demeanor projected his trademark aura of indifferent ease, they both recognized the glimmer of intensity burning in those cobalt depths. This was no mere social call.

"What's the situation?" Lysander prompted intently.

Daisuke's fingers drummed a staccato rhythm against the worn countertop, the sharp tapping the only sound apart from the occasional slosh of broth and slurp of noodles as Ryuu hastily drained the dregs. His eyes, so often alight with good-humored mischief, were downcast and shadowed by a furrowed brow as he struggled to find the words to articulate the dire crisis unfolding at Fujin Academy.

"I don't know anything about them," he confessed at last with a weary exhale, dark eyes flickering up to gauge his former mentor's impassive reaction. Lysander's countenance betrayed no outward shift, his lean frame as motionless and composed as an ancient statue carved from pale marble, yet Daisuke knew the keen intellect whirring beneath that aloof facade.

Pressing onwards, Daisuke elaborated in a hushed murmur, "But the teacher in charge is at the end of their rope. You remember Kenzo?"

A curt dip of Lysander's silvered head was the only acknowledgment, but it was enough for Daisuke to forge ahead, the words now spilling forth in an anxious deluge. "He's tearing his hair out at this point. When this student was admitted and told to demonstrate their powers..." The larger man paused, swallowing thickly as he replayed the harrowing memory in his mind's eye. "It nearly killed Kenzo. The entire staff had to evacuate - Mr. Fujin himself had to intervene."

An electric sort of tension crackled through the dinghy shop, raising the fine hairs at the nape of Lysander's neck though his expression remained as inscrutable as ever. Still, his cobalt eyes strayed from Daisuke's haunted features to the empty ceramic dish between them, that single name reverberating through his consciousness like a thunderclap.

Fujin. His esteemed former mentor, a heroic titan whose very presence commanded awe and respect in equal measure. For that legendary man to have personally stepped in could only imply a crisis of catastrophic proportions. Lysander had seen his fair share of harrowing ordeals in the decades since leaving these hallowed halls, yet nothing could have prepared him for this sick sense of trepidation coiling within his core.

The instructors at Fujin Academy were not merely exceptional - each had been carefully vetted and selected for their elite skills, their unwavering valor, their sheer tenacity of spirit. Kenzo alone was a force to be reckoned with, possessing mastery over ground and rock that allowed him to harness the very powers of the earth themselves as deadly weapons. If even he had proven incapable of subduing this mysterious new student's might, then what hope remained for the others?

"Was it intentional?" The words slipped from Lysander's lips almost unbidden in that same measured baritone, not a flicker of emotion to betray the turmoil churning beneath his stoic veneer.

Thankfully, Ryuu had finally torn himself away from ravenously draining the last few droplets from the ceramic bowl. Slapping it back onto the counter with a dull thunk, he fixed Lysander with an inscrutable look, his bravado briefly slipping to reveal the glimmers of uncertainty flickering beneath the surface.

"Not sure," he muttered at last with a halfhearted shrug, clearly grappling with his own roiling doubts. "But I don't think so, or else they could've killed a lot of students." A heartbeat passed before Ryuu seemed to find his voice again, the undercurrent of unease quickly cloaked by a mask of detached professionalism.

"It's a mess back at the academy. Students aren't showing up for classes because they're afraid this person's going to kill them. Teachers are getting nervous, the staff walking on eggshells around them. This student's getting ostracized pretty bad."

Lysander held Ryuu's gaze for a protracted moment, reading the unspoken dread lurking behind those vivid emerald irises. Only a few nights ago, they'd stood shoulder to shoulder as comrades united in their pursuit of heroism. In mere moments, it seemed the foundations of that world had shifted underfoot, leaving them all adrift in a sea of uncertainty.

Yet Lysander had been forged in the fires of life's cruelest tragedies, emerging from each successive crucible stronger and more indomitable than before. This latest crisis would prove no exception, regardless of whatever shadowed forces now threatened the sanctity of Mr. Fujin's esteemed academy.

"I guess I got my work cut out for me, huh?"

The next morning, Lysander made his way towards Mr. Fujin’s Academy in the mountains. The dense forest canopy swayed in the crisp mountain breeze, emerald boughs rustling like a whispered symphony as Lysander emerged from the shimmering oval portal. One moment amidst the verdant wilderness, the next standing before the soaring edifice of Fujin Academy - the very training grounds where he'd refined his skills and forged his heroic path many years ago.

His eyes drank in the achingly familiar sights, from the grand archways framing the main courtyard entrance to the banners emblazoned with the revered crest snapping crisply overhead. Memories, unbidden, washed over the seasoned warrior. Echoes of raucous laughter and roars of exertion, of sweat-slicked brows and the acrid tang of ozone still clinging to the air even now.

Lysander's reverie was abruptly shattered by a chorus of hushed whispers and furtive glances cast his way by the milling students. Even now, dressed in simple travel garments with his signature blade left behind, the former pupil's very presence seemed to command a palpable aura of awe and respect. The dull thrum of activity dimmed to a reverential hush as another figure emerged onto the broad stone path, cutting an unmistakable silhouette against the clouded sky. Though the years had etched new lines into his weathered features, Lysander instantly recognized the wizened martial artist making his unhurried approach.

"Lysander," Mr. Fujin called out in that same rich timbre, crinkling smile lines deepening at the corners of his eyes as he extended both arms in warm greeting. "It's good to see you again, lad."

Lysander felt his own lips quirk upwards in a faint yet genuine smile. Just being in this man's presence suffused his very being with a profound sense of tranquility and purpose. As if sensing the weight bearing down upon his former protege's shoulders, Fujin wasted no time on further pleasantries.

"Walk with me," he murmured, falling into stride beside Lysander as they passed beneath the vaulted archway into the courtyard beyond.

Students scattered like startled birds, affording the two warriors a respectful berth. Yet even their whispers stilled as Fujin spoke once more, his tone sober and gaze distant as they strode further into the academy's heart.

"This student has...a power within them unlike anything I've witnessed in my years," the elder hero confided, pausing to turn that piercing stare upon Lysander. "A power they cannot begin to control or comprehend. One that already came perilously close to exacting a grievous toll."

Lysander inclined his head fractionally, the barest hint of tension betrayed by the tightening of his jawline. He knew better than to interrupt, to allow his mentor's words to take their measured course.

"It is why I've summoned you back from your journey, my friend," Fujin continued solemnly. "I fear this force, if left unchecked, could prove catastrophic."

“What’s their power?”

Mr. Fujin shakes his head. “You’ll see. I want to help this student as much as anyone, but when powers this... sporadic and powerful appear impacting the others, I have to think of other options.” He tries phrasing it gently, but Lysander already knew it.

“You’re thinking of imprisoning them.” Lysander finishes, and Mr. Fujin didn’t respond to that.

They walked until they arrived at Mr. Fujins office, Lysander stood against the wall as Mr. Fujin took a seat. A tense silence hung thick in the air of Mr. Fujin's cramped office. Lysander leaned against the wall, arms crossed tightly as he studied the headmaster. Disappointment etched worry lines across the older man's forehead as he reached for the microphone with a reluctant hand.

"Bring Kenzo's student," Fujin's gravelly voice boomed through the speaker.

Lysander shifted, the hairs on the back of his neck prickling with unease. He could taste the static charge in the air, an invisible force building with each passing second. Whatever - whoever - was coming radiated immense, unbridled power barely contained.

The knob rattled. All eyes snapped towards the trembling door as an unseen presence thrummed against it. Lysander kept an air of indifference, leaning back against the wall with his hands in his pockets.

Kenzo surged forward first, yellow hair wild and eyes blazing with relieved gratitude. "Lys!" He gripped Lysander's hand with both of his own, calloused and weathered from years of training. "Thank the heavens you're here! Thought I was done for in that interview."

Lysander arched an eyebrow, the tightness across his shoulders loosening a fraction. "What do you mean?"

"Nearly killed me!" Kenzo threw his hands up, pacing now as the words tumbled out in a rush. "Not on purpose, I'm sure. But still, one second we were talking next thing I knew my entire life flashed--"

The door knob shook, cutting off Kenzo's tale. Lysander's breath caught in his throat. The raw, untamed power radiating off this student was staggering. Volatile energy crackled through the air, raising the fine hairs along Lysander's arms in response. He'd faced his fair share of threats before, but never anything like this.

This was the unknown they'd been warned about.
