Red-spectrum lamps painted her into something carved from blood and marble: tall, statuesque, perfectly still. Her black hair drifted in slow, liquid ripples as if underwater, though no air moved. Her golden irises clicked and rotated with mechanical precision until they found the glass, narrowing and widening as if tuning to a note only she could hear.
Her lips parted. No breath. No ordinary sound. Still, the monitors hiccuped — waveforms spiking into jagged peaks, dampeners groaning on frequencies they had never been asked to bear. Then he stopped. His head turned toward her. Slowly, as if pulled by a string tied to the ribs, his shoulders dropped, and he folded down to his knees. Not collapse but posture, precise in its suddenness: spine straight, hands flat to the floor, forehead lowered.
“Wha-what? n-n-no....I... I can’t, I won't, no—” he mouthed, voice gone into the noise. He fell quiet. The monitors leapt: heart racing, breath raw, neural spikes. Then a steadiness settled over him, uncanny and brittle.
Minutes passed slowly. At the seventh minute, he worked fingers through his hair, wrenching strands free and laying them in long, exact rows across the tile. He plucked one and pressed it to his tongue, swallowing slow as if tasting oath. Tongue taps began against teeth — a thin, repetitive percussion like someone beating time on a hollow drum.
By minute eleven, he was marking himself. He used the jagged cuff-edge to score twin lines down his forearms, then dragged blood in mirrored spirals across his chest. The marks repeated in measured geometry, the same pattern each time as if copying an instruction no one else heard. His voice grew thin and ritualized in fragments: “gift...silence...listen,” each word pared down to a husk of language.
At sixteen minutes words ceased to reach him. Calls over the intercom fell away. He answered only to the pull of that gaze. Teeth loosened in sequence; with shaking hands he worked one free and added it to a neat row beside hair and blood. Another came loose; he placed it with the care of offering. He swallowed a fragment of his own flesh and chewed slowly, mechanically, eyes locked on the bound figure who did not move.
Serafía watched, statuesque and patient. Her lips parted again, and through the wall of pink noise a whisper threaded, intimate and absolute — not a shout, not a command, but something folded like a surgeon’s blade into the skull:

The subject obeyed. He pressed his bloodied palm to his sternum, bent low, and tore a strip from his shoulder with a calm that had nothing of panic. He chewed, reverent. Blood smeared the glyphs at his feet and pooled in small, precise circles. His chant faltered into silence; his eyes were glass, devotion replacing terror.
In the bay, alarms screamed. The dampeners howled. Error lights stuttered across every monitor. None of it mattered. Serafía’s whisper had already drowned them all, leaving only the weight of her gaze pressing through the glass.
Two minor Wardens marched into the room, grabbing the man and hauling him off to the research bay on Level Three for closer examination, scans, and further neural testing. The hydraulics hissed as the door shut and locked behind them after the removal of the subject.
Inside the vault, Serafía remained upright and silent, hair drifting as though stirred by unseen currents. Chains groaned faintly around her frame, but her golden eyes never left the observation window.
