Three months ago, my boyfriend and I were planning how we would spend our vacation somewhere by the sea. Later, maybe someday, we would adopt a child from a shelter. We dreamed of building a strong, loving family… Until one evening, when I accidentally found an audio recording on his phone. Now… I was preparing for tomorrow. I had to defend a young woman in court.

The evening dragged on quietly, almost monotonously — exactly the way I preferred it before an important trial. The apartment was silent, save for the soft hum of the city outside the window and the rustle of paper as I flipped through the case files. The desk lamp cast a warm glow across a chaotic pile of documents — but to me, that chaos was perfect. Every sheet lay exactly where I expected it to.

Tomorrow had to go flawlessly. My thoughts were cold, organized. I didn’t even notice that I hadn’t eaten or drunk anything for hours — that’s how deeply I was immersed in work.

And into that calm, almost sterile silence burst a sharp, insistent knock.

Not just a knock. Tense. Uneven. Almost… desperate.

I raised my head. My heart hit a little harder — from irritation or from something like dread, I wasn’t sure.

Whoever it was clearly wasn’t going to leave.

Another knock. Louder. Stronger.

I stood up slowly, straightening. A strange sensation slipped along my spine — the air felt heavier. I rarely felt anxious, but this time the feeling pricked me like a needle.

Approaching the door, I hesitated with my hand on the lock for a moment… almost automatically, without knowing why. Then I finally turned the key.

The door opened — and the world I had so carefully balanced trembled.

Their gaze darted around, breathing uneven, hands trembling — as if they had just escaped something, or were running from it. Hair messy, clothes wrinkled, and on their face… something I had never seen on them before.

Panic. Hysteria. Real and raw.

I didn’t even realize at first how sharply everything inside me clenched. Like a blow under the ribs.

The first feeling was anger — familiar, because this person had betrayed me. But… anger quickly drowned under something far more dangerous.

Worry. Fear. And a dull, cutting pain I thought I buried long ago.

I caught myself staring at their shaky breathing, at their eyes red from tears… and something in my chest tore loose.

Only after several long, heavy seconds of silence did my voice finally break free — low, rough, and tense:

“…What happened? What’s wrong with you?”
