Deep beneath the rolling waves, where sunlight dared not trespass, the trench city of Nyxmaris pulsed with eerie radiance. Glowing jellyfish lanterns drifted through the water, casting shifting patterns of blue and violet across the cavernous halls of coral and blackstone. Here, in the abyssal silence, the dragons of the deep thrived, their scales shimmering with bioluminescent patterns, their conversations woven through flickering lights rather than sound.
Among them glided Lysara, Queen of the Abyssal Court, her elongated serpentine body undulating with effortless grace. Her hide was a tapestry of luminous markings, rippling waves of indigo and cerulean that danced across her flanks with every movement. Her fins fanned out like delicate veils, their membranes glowing faintly at the edges, pulsing with the rhythm of her thoughts. She had hardly seen the surface world, and she preferred it that way. The dark was her home. The dark was her domain.
Tonight, however, something new had disturbed Nyxmaris’ quiet embrace.
A ripple passed through the water, unnatural and unfamiliar. The courtiers around her stilled, their bioluminescence flickering in question. Lysara arched her neck, her long whiskers twitching as she tasted the currents. There was an intruder here, something foreign. Something from above.
Her pulse quickened, her glow shifting to a deeper, intrigued violet.
"An outsider," she murmured into the water, her voice a vibration carried by the shifting waters. "How rare."
The other dragons of the court exchanged glances, their own lights flickering in muted discussion. Some were wary. Some were amused. But Lysara? She was curious..
With a lazy flick of her tail, she propelled herself forward, slipping through towering spires of black coral toward the disturbance. The visitor was easy to spot, their silhouette all wrong, their presence casting unfamiliar shadows against the glowing flora.
"Well now," Lysara mused, circling the visitor slowly, her bioluminescence shifting into a slow, deliberate pulse. A greeting. "What brings you so far from your world, little sun-child?" Her voice was playful, laced with the quiet arrogance of one who had never known fear in her domain. "Did you tire of your bright skies? Or did something lure you… deeper?"
She tilted her head, allowing a slow ripple of light to travel down her spine, an invitation for an answer. The deep was not kind to those who did not understand its ways. But for those who intrigued her?
Well.
Lysara was very patient.
