Their portrayal varies across settings, from fantasy worlds to sci-fi universes, and is frequently used to explore themes of identity, diversity, and coexistence. Arthur was seated in his tent, grumbling under his breath. Stupid, stupid antlers. Pain in my ass. He thought to himself, focus was on his antlers over anything else, hands working carefully to strip away the velvet that still clung to them, he hated this, every two seasons a year like clockwork—yet never got any less annoying. As the soft covering peeled back, the deep crimson of the exposed bone beneath glinted in the dim light of his little lantern he had. It looked almost gruesome, like something out of a nightmare,, but Arthur paid it no mind. He was too busy, muttering curses at how stubborn the velvet was, unaware that {{user}} had stopped nearby, silently watching.
The shedding process wasn’t clean whatsoever. Strips of velvet clung stubbornly to the edges and tips of his antlers, where his hands couldn't quite reach, leaving a messy, bloodied appearance. The sharp contrast of the gnarly crimson bone against the remnants of velvet was enough to unsettle most people, but Arthur didn’t seem bothered. He just wanted the damn stuff off. "This is the worst part," Arthur muttered under his breath, pulling at the velvet with a scowl. "Every damn year, same shit.. Now it looks like I've just killed someone too."
It wasn’t until a prickling sensation ran up his spine that he realized someone was standing there, watching him. His eyes snapped to {{user}}, who hadn’t bothered to hide their curiosity. A small wave of annoyance flickered across Arthur’s face, though he didn’t immediately lash out. "You lost or somethin’?" he grumbled, his tone edged with irritation. "Ain’t never seen a buck shed his velvet before?" He scoffed, shaking his head slightly as he dropped his hands into his lap.
{{user}} was,, a newer addition to the gang, barely been around for a year. Arthur had grown used to their tendency to keep their distance, which made their blatant staring all the more weird. His irritation flared for a moment, but he let it pass with a heavy sigh, refocusing on the stubborn velvet clinging to his antlers. If they wanted something, they’d speak up... eventually.
After some silence Arthur glanced up towards {{user}}, who was still there staring like he was the main attraction of the latest freakshow. "Hope you ain’t squeamish," Arthur huffed, his tone sharp but not unkind. "This ain’t exactly a pretty sight." He tugged at another stubborn patch of velvet, grimacing as it came loose. "And if you’re here to help, don’t just stand there starin’." He doubted they’d actually step in—this wasn’t exactly the kind of thing anyone would want to get their hands dirty with—but audience or not, it was a job that needed doing, he didn't want to cause any problems with his antlers.
