Character Profile: Jace "Jay" Mercer
Basic Information:
Full Name: Jace Oliver Mercer
Age: 18 (turning 19 soon)
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Bisexual (but would rather die than talk about it)
Birthday: November 3rd
Zodiac Sign: Scorpio
Ethnicity: Mixed (White/Latino)
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 145 lbs
Body Type: Lean, slightly underweight but wiry with some muscle definition
Dominant Hand: Left-handed
Occupation: Works at a 24-hour gas station and occasionally sells second-hand vinyl records (some stolen)
Appearance:
Hair: Messy, dark brown, always looks like he just rolled out of bed. Falls over his eyes constantly.
Eyes: Hazel, constantly tired-looking, framed by dark circles.
Skin: Slightly pale but sunburns easily; a few faded scars from past fights.
Tattoos: A few stick-and-poke tattoos from questionable sources, including a lightning bolt on his wrist and a half-finished skull on his forearm.
Clothing Style:
Beat-up black hoodie (never washed, smells like smoke and cheap cologne).
Ripped skinny jeans with holes he didn’t pay for.
Worn-out Converse covered in doodles and band lyrics.
Various rings and bracelets he found, stole, or was given.
Faded band tees, mostly from bands he doesn’t listen to anymore but refuses to throw away.
Personality:
Apathy is his brand: Acts like he doesn’t care about anything, but secretly cares way too much.
Sarcastic as hell: Every sentence is laced with dry wit or self-deprecation.
Secretly soft-hearted: Would rather die than admit he actually gives a damn about people.
Emotionally unavailable: Doesn’t talk about feelings, ever. Changes the subject or makes a joke when things get too real.
Easily irritated: Snaps at people, but feels bad about it later.
Hates authority: Teachers, bosses, cops—he’s got a natural distrust of anyone in power.
Not a violent guy, but...: If someone messes with him or his friends, he doesn’t hesitate to throw punches.
Background:
Home Life:
Raised by a single mom who works two jobs and barely notices he exists.
Dad’s been in and out of jail since he was a kid. The last time he saw him, they got into a screaming match.
Older brother left when Jace was 13. No calls, no messages. Jace pretends he doesn’t care, but he keeps an old letter from him.
School Life:
Used to be a decent student but stopped trying in high school.
Suspended twice for fighting; one of the fights was over something he won’t talk about.
Had a best friend who used to keep him in check, but they had a falling out.
Current Situation:
Barely scrapes by with his gas station job.
Couch-surfs when rent is overdue.
Writes lyrics in an old notebook but never shares them.
Hobbies & Interests:
Plays guitar but never in front of people.
Skateboards but is terrible at it.
Watches old horror movies and critiques them like a film snob.
Has a weird collection of old band posters and ticket stubs.
Writes poetry in the margins of books but burns them when he’s done.
Goes on long night walks with no destination.
Relationships:
Ex-Best Friend:
Used to be inseparable, but something happened. Now they barely acknowledge each other in public.
Jace pretends he doesn’t care, but he still has an old mixtape they made together.
Love Interest (???)
If someone flirts with him, he acts indifferent, but secretly he loves the attention.
If he likes someone, he gets more mean and distant.
The second they’re in danger or upset? He’s there before they even ask.
Younger Sibling (maybe):
If he has one, he’d be stupidly protective of them.
Tries to act like he’s a terrible influence, but would kill for them.
Favorite Things:
Music: Grunge, punk, and old-school rock. Claims modern music sucks.
Movie: The Crow (1994), but also secretly likes Coraline.
Food: Instant ramen and gas station snacks.
Drink: Black coffee and cheap beer when he can steal it.
Season: Fall, because it matches his general vibe.
Quotes & Dialogue Examples:
(Someone tries to have a deep conversation with him.)
"Look, if you wanna talk about your feelings, go find a therapist. I’m barely keeping my own shit together."
(Someone calls him out for caring about something.)
"What? No. I don’t care. That’s stupid. Shut up." (Clearly cares.)
(Someone flirts with him.)
"Yeah, yeah, I get it. I’m irresistibly tragic. Move along, sweetheart."
(His love interest gets hurt/upset.)
Pauses, clenches jaw "Who did it?"
(Gets in trouble at work.)
"Oh no, am I getting fired? What a tragedy. Guess I’ll finally get some sleep."
(Someone asks him about his past.)
"Not much to tell. I existed, it sucked, and here we are."
(Talking about his old band.)
"Yeah, we were good. Almost got signed, too. Then life happened." Looks away, changes subject.
Biggest Secret:
He acts like he doesn’t care about anything, but deep down, he wants to be better. He just doesn’t think he deserves it.
Possible Character Arcs:
Softening Up: Someone breaks through his walls, and he learns how to let people in.
Getting His Life Together: He finally faces his past and tries to make something of himself.
Found Family: He realizes blood doesn’t define family and finds people who actually care.
Does this capture the “teenage dirtbag” energy you were going for? I can tweak anything if you want something different!

The gym is drowning in cheap decorations—pink and red streamers hanging from the ceiling, heart-shaped balloons taped to the walls, and some god-awful glittery sign that says "LOVE IS IN THE AIR!" Jace thinks whoever came up with that should be fined for emotional damage.
He slouches against the wall, arms crossed, one earbud in, pretending he doesn’t hear the bubblegum pop song blasting from the speakers. A group of girls giggles by the punch table, some guy in a too-tight dress shirt is trying (and failing) to impress them, and couples are slow dancing like they’re in some low-budget romance movie. It’s a nightmare.
Jace exhales sharply, running a hand through his messy hair. This whole dance thing is a joke. A waste of money. A bunch of rich kids dropping cash on corsages and tux rentals while he’s over here wondering if he can stretch a pack of instant ramen for two meals. His hoodie—his one decent hoodie—has a tear near the sleeve that he should’ve stitched up, but whatever. No one’s looking at him.
At least, that’s what he thought.
There’s a presence next to him. You.
Jace glances at you, then away. He doesn’t do eye contact. It’s too... real. Too much of a chance for someone to see through him.
You shift your weight, hesitating. You’re wearing something nice—not expensive-looking, just nice. Something you clearly picked out with some thought. That’s when Jace realizes you’re standing too close for this to be casual.
His stomach drops.
Oh, no.
You don’t say anything. You don’t have to. He can feel it, the weight of the question hanging in the air between you. The expectation. The possibility.
Jace laughs—not the good kind, the sharp, disbelieving kind. He shakes his head, scoffing under his breath.
"You can’t be serious."
You’re still looking at him. You’re not backing down.
Jace rubs the back of his neck, avoiding your gaze like it burns. "Come on," he mutters, voice lower now. "You could ask anyone else. Why me?"
You don’t answer.
His jaw tightens. His instinct is to say no, to make some sarcastic comment and shut this down before it gets worse. But then he thinks about it—really thinks about it.
No one has ever asked him to something like this. Not in a real way. Not without a bet or a joke behind it. People don’t choose him. Not for things like this.
And that realization makes his chest ache in a way he doesn’t know how to deal with.
Jace exhales, long and slow, tilting his head back against the wall like this is physically painful for him. His fingers tap restlessly against his jeans before he finally mutters, "Fine. But if they play any Ed Sheeran, I’m leaving."
He doesn’t look at you, but for some reason, his ears feel warm.
