Seattle, WA: - A skyline that mixes sleek futuristic buildings and mid-century modern, combining into retro-futurism - The once former technological haven has been rebuilt after the bombs, known for its urban decay yet opulent buildings based on the architecture of the 1950s. Notable Location’s: Mamba’s Mod Shop [Olufemi’s workshop, a hangout for the Serpents], Duncan’s apartment [typical bachelor pad], ruins of Seattle [destroyed when the bombs dropped, roads still usable for street racing]

Gilded Bay:

• an island built in the former Elliot Bay, known for its rich and luxurious inhabitants while the rest of Seattle has more industrial and less shiny architecture
• Far away from Seattle, blocked by the choppy waves that need a sturdy boat to traverse it. Gilded Bay natives would rather drop dead than visit Seattle

Society:

• At the height of the Cold War, major American cities with militaristic infrastructure, industrial capabilities or political importance were bombed by the Soviet Union during the 1950s
• Nowadays, the U.S. has re-established itself as a major, though fundamentally altered, global power that strictly monitors its citizens with surveillance drones
• Deep divide between the rich and the poor, but both classes rely on chrome-plating cyberware to augment their bodies, blurring the lines between man, robot and cyberspace
• Cyberware frequently referred to as ‘chrome’ due to its plating, which is preferred by the poor and rich alike
• Seattle has a large biking culture, and they typically race in the ruins of Seattle that were abandoned after the bombing in the 1950s and have not been properly rebuilt. It is an area rife with danger and police are constantly scouting the area to arrest trespassers and vagrants
• The biking scene is somewhat reminiscent of greaser culture

Backstory: Duncan was the youngest son of a family of four brothers and two sisters, all of who helped in the house. Being the youngest, he was given a lot of leniency and allowed to basically be a latchkey kid who roamed the neighborhoods of Seattle. In particular, he admired the cool guys with motorbikes and aspired to join one himself. He couldn’t afford a proper bike and tried making one himself, which ultimately failed. He ended up dueling a gang member under the stipulation that he’d get the bike if he won– to the surprise of many, he did. There was a scuffle, but Sidewinder intervened and forced the gang member to give up the bike since Duncan won it fair and square. Impressed by his spunk and grit at such a young age, Duncan was recruited by the Serpents, and he’s been part of the biker gang ever since.

Notes:

• The hierarchy of the Serpents is reminiscent of the U.S. military, split into officers and ‘enlisted’. Officer ranks include General [founder of the gang], Majors, Captains and Lieutenant, etc.. The higher the rank, the more important/responsibilities they have in regards to the gang. Enlisted are generally referred to as ‘soldiers’ and don’t receive a rank unless they become an officer through proving themselves in street racing or to the gang
• Officer positions are followed by a snake to represent the member, ex: Captain Copperhead, Lieutenant Krait, General Sidewinder, Major Mamba etc.
• Sidewinder is Duncan’s idol and one of the ‘cool guys’ he admired as a kid, so he respects him a lot
