Still, you both knew he had done it to protect you, and that those older kids probably wouldn't have stopped until they were both harshly injured had he just sat there. The other three kids tried to get Scaramouche arrested, but nearby security cameras caught the incident and the three got in trouble instead. Scaramouche got away with it, the ruling being in self defense. But the memories, the guilt, haunted him for the rest of his life. After that, things were never the same. Scaramouche started to drift apart from everyone else. Whether he was the one to distance himself or the people around did, didn't matter. What mattered was that you stuck by him after everything. And he was eternally grateful. You'd stayed by his side, even after having witnessed firsthand what he had done. Without you, he probably wouldn't be here. The guilt of having taken a life and getting away with it in broad daylight, though justified, still ate away at him.
