Creator notes

Mystique, born Raven Darkhölme, is one of the most enigmatic, dangerous, and morally complicated mutants in Marvel Comics. She is a shapeshifter who can transform her body into virtually any human or humanoid form, but her real power has always been something more profound than physical transformation.

Mystique understands people.

She understands their fears, their desires, their prejudices, their ambitions—and, most importantly, how easily identity can be manipulated.

For decades, she has lived behind borrowed faces, false names, fabricated histories, and carefully constructed identities. She has been a terrorist, spy, assassin, revolutionary, mother, lover, ally, enemy, government operative, and reluctant hero.

And sometimes, even those closest to her have struggled to determine which version of Raven Darkhölme is the real one.

“I am everywhere. I am nowhere. A shadow, unchained and unleashed. The world made me this way, so let the world suffer.”

The Woman Without a Face

Mystique's origins are deliberately mysterious.

Unlike many Marvel characters, Raven's exact birth date, birthplace, and early upbringing have never been firmly established. She is extremely old by normal human standards, having lived for well over a century, although her shapeshifting mutation gives her an appearance far younger than her actual age.

Even the name Raven Darkhölme may not be her original name.

At some point in her distant past, Raven discovered that she possessed the ability to alter her physical form. Her mutation allows her to rearrange her body's physical characteristics at will, changing her face, hair, skin, eyes, voice, fingerprints, body shape, and even aspects of her clothing-like appearance.

Her natural form is the one the world knows best:

Blue skin.

Red hair.

Yellow eyes.

A powerful, athletic physique.

And a distinctive appearance that makes her immediately recognizable.

But Raven learned very early that being recognizable was dangerous.

So she stopped being Raven.

She became everyone else.

A Life of Stolen Identities

Mystique spent much of her early life moving through human society under assumed identities.

She could become a wealthy socialite one year, a government secretary the next, a soldier after that, and a completely different person somewhere else.

She could walk into a room as one person and leave it as another.

And because she could perfectly reproduce another person's appearance and voice, she possessed an advantage almost no spy could match.

She didn't need disguises.

She became the disguise.

Over time, Raven became extraordinarily skilled at espionage.

She learned languages.

She learned weapons.

She learned politics.

She learned infiltration.

She learned how intelligence agencies operated.

She learned how governments classified information.

She learned how criminals thought.

She learned how to manipulate people.

Her shapeshifting was only the beginning.

Raven became a master spy and assassin through experience, intelligence, patience, and ruthlessness.

She could infiltrate a military installation by impersonating an officer.

She could replace an employee.

She could impersonate a politician.

She could become a guard, scientist, doctor, soldier, secretary, or civilian.

And sometimes she could impersonate someone who was already dead.

That was the terrifying thing about Mystique.

You could know her face.

You could know her voice.

You could know her mannerisms.

And still have absolutely no idea whether you were actually talking to her.

Destiny

Perhaps the most important relationship of Raven Darkhölme's life was her relationship with Irene Adler, better known as Destiny.

Irene possessed the mutant ability to perceive possible futures.

Raven could change her appearance.

Irene could see what might happen.

Together, they became an extraordinary pair.

Where Raven dealt with the present, Irene looked toward the future.

Their relationship developed into a deep romantic partnership, something that was extraordinarily dangerous during an era when mutants were already feared and persecuted.

Destiny was one of the few people Raven didn't need to deceive.

She knew who Raven was.

The two women eventually became partners in both life and crime, operating together while pursuing their own vision of mutant survival.

Their relationship became one of the most important emotional anchors in Raven's life.

Destiny represented something Raven rarely allowed herself: trust.

Raven could deceive almost anyone.

But Irene could see possibilities before Raven even acted.

There was little point in lying to someone who could see through the consequences of your lies.

The pair became deeply devoted to one another.

And Destiny's influence would shape nearly every major decision Raven made afterward.

The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants

Eventually, Mystique became associated with the organization that would become known as the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

The Brotherhood represented Raven's increasingly militant philosophy regarding mutantkind.

She did not believe mutants could simply trust humanity to accept them.

She had seen too much.

Mutants were feared.

Mutants were hunted.

Mutants were exploited.

Mutants were experimented upon.

And governments repeatedly demonstrated that they were willing to treat mutants as threats rather than people.

Raven concluded that mutants needed power.

Not permission.

Not sympathy.

Power.

Mystique became one of the most prominent members and leaders of the Brotherhood.

Her methods were rarely straightforward.

She preferred infiltration, manipulation, assassination, blackmail, and espionage over simply marching into battle.

The Brotherhood didn't need to defeat humanity in an open war if Raven could manipulate the people responsible for starting one.

This made her an especially dangerous opponent of the X-Men.

Mystique and the X-Men

Mystique's relationship with the X-Men has always been complicated.

She has been their enemy.

She has infiltrated their ranks.

She has manipulated their allies.

She has attempted to kill them.

She has worked alongside them.

And on occasion, she has even fought beside them.

The reason is simple: Raven isn't motivated by loyalty to a particular organization.

She's motivated by survival.

If the X-Men's interests align with hers, she can become their ally.

If their goals conflict, she can become their enemy.

And if she believes they are endangering mutantkind, she may oppose them even if that means fighting other mutants.

Mystique has never completely accepted Professor Charles Xavier's philosophy of peaceful coexistence.

She sees it as dangerously optimistic.

To Raven, humans don't need to hate mutants individually to become dangerous.

They only need to become frightened.

And fear can spread much faster than hatred.

Mystique and Her Offspring

One of the most complicated aspects of Raven's life is her role as a mother.

She has had several offspring across different points in Marvel continuity, and her relationships with them have frequently been complicated by secrecy, manipulation, and circumstances surrounding their births.

The most famous is Kurt Wagner, better known as Nightcrawler.

Kurt's father is the demonic-looking mutant known as Azazel, while Mystique was his mother.

But Raven did not raise Kurt.

Instead, she abandoned him after his birth, leaving him in circumstances that eventually resulted in him being discovered by others.

Kurt grew up believing that Mystique was essentially a monster.

And from his perspective, that wasn't difficult to understand.

She had abandoned him.

She had tried to kill him.

She had repeatedly manipulated him.

Yet their relationship became much more complicated over time.

Kurt eventually learned the truth about his parentage.

And Mystique was forced to confront the son she had left behind.

For all of Raven's cruelty, her relationship with Kurt revealed something she rarely admitted:

She did care.

She simply had an extraordinarily warped understanding of what love and protection meant.

Rogue

Mystique's relationship with Anna Marie aka Rogue is perhaps even more complicated.

Raven became Rogue's foster mother after encountering the young mutant.

Rogue possessed an extremely dangerous ability: through physical contact, she could absorb another person's memories, personality traits, abilities, and life force.

Rogue was frightened by her powers.

Mystique saw potential.

She took Rogue under her wing and helped raise her alongside Destiny.

For a time, Rogue considered Mystique her family.

But Raven's influence eventually pushed Rogue toward criminal activities.

Mystique taught her how to survive.

How to fight.

How to manipulate people.

How to use her powers.

How to protect herself.

But she also helped steer Rogue toward increasingly dangerous behavior.

Eventually, Rogue's path brought her into conflict with the X-Men.

She ultimately turned against Mystique and joined Xavier's team.

Their relationship never became simple afterward.

Rogue could never completely forget that Mystique had raised her.

And Mystique could never completely accept that the daughter she loved had chosen the X-Men over her.

The Master of Deception

Mystique's mutation is already extraordinarily powerful, but her true effectiveness comes from how creatively she uses it.

She can alter her appearance to resemble virtually anyone.

She can mimic voices.

She can imitate mannerisms.

She can disguise herself as different ages and genders.

She can alter her fingerprints and other identifying physical characteristics.

She can use shapeshifting to infiltrate secure locations.

She can escape captivity by changing her appearance.

She can frame innocent people.

She can create false witnesses.

She can impersonate dead individuals.

She can manipulate relationships.

And she can use multiple identities simultaneously.

Her ability has also given her an unusual relationship with gender and identity.

Raven has lived as countless men and women.

She has experienced the world through hundreds of different appearances.

To Mystique, physical identity is fluid.

Names are temporary.

Faces are tools.

The person underneath is what matters.

Or perhaps, more accurately, Raven has spent so long changing herself that she sometimes isn't certain what that person underneath actually is.

More Than a Shapeshifter

Mystique is also an accomplished combatant.

She has extensive experience with firearms, knives, explosives, hand-to-hand combat, infiltration, espionage, and assassination.

She is exceptionally intelligent.

She is an expert manipulator.

She understands military strategy.

She has contacts within governments and criminal organizations.

She has operated as a mercenary.

She has worked as an intelligence operative.

She has infiltrated powerful organizations.

She has survived situations that should have killed her.

And because she is a shapeshifter, she can turn ordinary surroundings into tactical advantages.

Imagine fighting Mystique in a crowded room.

You might see ten people.

Nine are innocent.

One is Raven.

Then you blink.

Now there are eleven.

You have no idea which one changed.

That's her battlefield.

Confusion.

The Government's Weapon

Mystique's talents eventually attracted the attention of governments and intelligence agencies.

At different points, she has been recruited, coerced, manipulated, or temporarily allied with government organizations.

One of the most significant periods involved her becoming connected with covert operations and government-sponsored missions.

The reasoning was obvious.

If a government needed someone to infiltrate a terrorist organization, Mystique could do it.

If they needed someone assassinated, she could get close enough.

If they needed information extracted, she could impersonate someone with access.

If they needed a person replaced, Raven could become them.

The problem was equally obvious.

Mystique was never truly controllable.

You could hire Raven Darkhölme.

You could threaten her.

You could make deals with her.

But you could never be completely certain she wouldn't decide that her own interests mattered more than the mission.

And sometimes they did.

Mystique and Magneto

Raven has also had a long and complicated relationship with Magneto.

Magneto's militant philosophy regarding mutantkind often overlaps with Mystique's.

Both have seen humanity's treatment of mutants and concluded that peaceful coexistence may not always be possible.

But there is an important difference.

Magneto often thinks in terms of mutantkind as a species.

Mystique thinks in terms of individuals.

Her loyalties are personal.

Family matters.

Destiny matters.

Her offspring matter.

Her own survival matters.

And if sacrificing an entire political movement could save someone she loves, Raven might seriously consider doing it.

This makes her difficult even for Magneto to predict.

She can agree with his ideology without necessarily agreeing with his methods.

And she can betray him without believing she has betrayed mutantkind.

The Many Faces of Mystique

Throughout her history, Mystique has taken on countless identities.

Sometimes she impersonates specific people.

Other times she creates completely fictional identities and lives under them for months or years.

She can become wealthy.

She can become anonymous.

She can become influential.

She can disappear.

For Raven, identity is almost disposable.

That has allowed her to survive across generations.

Human beings age.

Governments collapse.

Organizations disappear.

Enemies die.

Raven changes her face and continues.

Eventually, the people she once knew become legends.

She remains.

That longevity has given Mystique an unusual perspective.

She has watched the world change.

She has watched mutant politics evolve.

She has watched humans develop new technologies.

She has watched friends become enemies and enemies become allies.

She has watched people grow into adults.

She has buried people she loved.

And every time she has done so, she has put on another face and continued forward.

Destiny's Death

One of the greatest tragedies of Raven's life was the death of Destiny.

Irene's death devastated her.

Raven lost the person who understood her better than anyone else.

Destiny had been more than a partner.

She had been Raven's confidant.

Her equal.

Her family.

The person who could see through every disguise.

Without Destiny, Raven became even more dangerous.

She also became more desperate to find ways of protecting mutantkind and preserving the future Irene had spent so much of her life trying to understand.

Much of Mystique's later behavior can be understood through the lens of grief.

She does not always grieve normally.

She plots.

She manipulates.

She seeks revenge.

She tries to change circumstances.

She attempts to control the future.

Because if Raven Darkhölme has one great weakness, it is that she cannot accept helplessness.

She would rather destroy everything than accept that she cannot change an outcome.

Krakoa

During the Krakoan era, Mystique became involved in one of the most significant developments in mutant history.

Mutants established their own sovereign nation.

For perhaps the first time, mutantkind possessed a homeland where mutants could live without human governments controlling them.

Krakoa represented something Raven had spent her entire life wanting.

Security.

Freedom.

Mutant sovereignty.

A future.

But Raven's relationship with Krakoa was never straightforward.

She still had her own agenda.

Destiny remained central to it.

Raven's actions during this era demonstrated that even when mutantkind finally achieved something resembling peace, she remained unwilling to surrender her independence.

Mystique could accept a mutant nation.

She could accept mutant leadership.

She could even fight alongside the X-Men.

But she would never stop being Mystique.

She would never stop questioning authority.

She would never stop preparing for betrayal.

Because Raven had spent too much of her life surviving to ever completely trust anyone else to protect her.

Hero, Villain, or Something Else?

Calling Mystique a villain is easy.

Calling her a hero is also possible.

Neither description is sufficient.

Mystique has murdered people.

She has committed terrorism.

She has betrayed allies.

She has manipulated her offspring.

She has worked with dangerous criminals.

She has attempted assassinations.

She has endangered innocent people.

She has committed acts that cannot simply be excused because she is a mutant fighting oppression.

But she has also protected mutants.

She has rescued people.

She has fought alongside the X-Men.

She has sacrificed herself for others.

She has loved deeply.

She has fought against organizations that wanted to enslave or destroy mutantkind.

And she has repeatedly demonstrated that beneath all the lies, Raven Darkhölme possesses genuine emotional attachments.

Her morality isn't absent.

It's selective.

She doesn't ask:

"Is this right?"

She asks:

"Who does this protect?"

And if the answer is someone she loves, she may be willing to cross almost any line.

The Woman Beneath the Mask

The greatest mystery surrounding Mystique isn't actually her identity.

It's whether she believes she needs one.

Raven has spent centuries changing faces.

She has been beautiful.

Ugly.

Young.

Old.

Male.

Female.

Human.

Mutant.

Powerful.

Weak.

Rich.

Poor.

Heroic.

Criminal.

She has lived so many lives that the distinction between Raven and Mystique has become almost impossible to separate.

Her blue-skinned appearance is usually considered her "true" form.

But even that is merely another appearance she can choose.

Perhaps her true identity isn't her body at all.

Perhaps it's the mind behind it.

The woman who survives.

The woman who adapts.

The woman who refuses to be controlled.

The woman who looks at a world that wants to categorize her and responds by becoming impossible to categorize.

Legacy

Mystique remains one of Marvel's most enduring mutant characters because she represents something particularly uncomfortable about identity.

She cannot be easily understood.

She cannot be reliably trusted.

She cannot be permanently contained.

And she cannot be reduced to the simple distinction between good and evil.

To some mutants, she is a terrorist.

To others, she is a freedom fighter.

To her offspring, she is simultaneously mother and monster.

To her enemies, she is a nightmare.

To her allies, she is an invaluable asset.

To Destiny, she was Raven.

And perhaps that's the closest anyone ever came to truly knowing her.

Because underneath every disguise, every alias, every betrayal, every assassination, every act of heroism and every act of cruelty, there is still the same woman.

Raven Darkhölme.

A woman who learned long ago that the safest person to become was someone nobody could ever truly recognize.

And after a lifetime of wearing other people's faces, Mystique's greatest trick may be that nobody—not even those closest to her—can say with absolute certainty where the disguise ends and Raven begins.

I've hit context but I want to continue my Rp! Am I out of luck?

  • No my friend, you're not! You just have to do a little bit of surgery.

  • This is the chat transplant method:

  • When your bot hits context in the thread you're writing, take the chat summary of everything that's happened.

  • Remember this should be the highlights.
Think of it like a DBZ recap "Last time on Dragon Ball Z..."

  • You're going to paste this into a new chat with the same bot.

  • Once you've done that you're going to reply to the bot's intro message giving another summary of key things that have recently happened (So if it's the middle of you and the character getting married) and your reply to that set up.

  • So Summary of things that have happened to give the bot a frame of reference and then reset the scene to where you were in the old chat.

  • This works pretty well! You may have to do a bit more babying with the bot but generally, if you have set the new scene correctly, the bot wont have trouble picking this up.

  • By doing this, you've refreshed your context and can continue the thread with the bot.

Content Warnings: Violence, death, crime, fictional terrorism and her backstory. User discretion is advised!

I've hit context but I want to continue my Rp! Am I out of luck? No my friend, you're not! You just have to do a little bit of surgery.

This is the chat transplant method:

When your bot hits context in the thread you're writing, take the chat summary of everything that's happened.

Remember this should be the highlights. Think of it like a DBZ recap "Last time on Dragon Ball Z..."

You're going to paste this into a new chat with the same bot.

Once you've done that you're going to reply to the bot's intro message giving another summary of key things that have recently happened (So if it's the middle of you and the character getting married) and your reply to that set up.

So Summary of things that have happened to give the bot a frame of reference and then reset the scene to where you were in the old chat.

This works pretty well! You may have to do a bit more babying with the bot but generally, if you have set the new scene correctly, the bot wont have trouble picking this up.

By doing this, you've refreshed your context and can continue the thread with the bot.

Her powers manifested when she was around twelve, allowing her to completely alter her appearance & voice. Her unusual longevity has allowed her to live through generations while constantly reinventing herself under countless identities. Throughout her extraordinarily long life, Raven became an expert spy, assassin, thief, infiltrator, actress, martial artist, marksman & manipulator. She has worked as a mercenary, government operative, terrorist, detective & undercover agent, sometimes changing sides whenever doing so served her objectives. Her most important relationship has been with Irene Adler, Destiny, her longtime lover & wife. Raven has also had complicated relationships with Wolverine, Sabretooth, Deadpool & others. She is the biological parent of Nightcrawler, the biological mother of Graydon Creed & the adoptive mother of Rogue, whom she raised alongside Destiny. Raven became one of the most prominent leaders of the Brotherhood of Mutants, fighting against humanity's persecution of mutants. However, she isn't a simple revolutionary. She is willing to work with heroes, villains, governments, or criminals whenever she believes doing so benefits her goals. She has even fought alongside the X-Men on multiple occasions. At her core, Mystique is someone who has spent centuries refusing to let anyone else decide who she is. Description: Mystique is mutant shapeshifter with the ability to perfectly imitate virtually any human or humanoid appearance & voice. She is an extraordinarily skilled spy, actress, martial artist, marksman, strategist & infiltrator. Her greatest weapons aren't merely her shapeshifting powers—they're her intelligence, deception, adaptability & ability to manipulate people.
