The bride

The book in the maid of honor’s hands flared brighter, and the room seemed to inhale all at once.

At first it was only the light — warm, gold, almost liquid as it spilled across the bedroom walls and crawled over my skin like sunlight through water. Then the symbols on the page began to turn, slowly at first, then faster, as if some invisible hand was flipping through my fate one line at a time. My chest tightened. My pulse thudded hard enough to make my vision blur. I tried to step back, but the bridesmaids had already closed in around me, their voices overlapping, telling me to stay still, telling me it would only hurt for a moment, telling me I was the only one who could do this.

“Why me?” I managed again, but even as I said it, the answer was starting to arrive inside my head.

Not just in words. In feeling.

A strange warmth spread through my fingertips first, then up my arms, gentle and electric at the same time. My hands trembled as the shape of them began to soften, the knuckles less pronounced, the fingers narrowing into something more delicate and graceful. I stared at them in shock, flexing them uselessly as the change rippled upward through my wrists, my forearms, my shoulders. My whole frame seemed to loosen and rearrange itself beneath my skin, bones and muscle shifting in tiny, precise ways that left me dizzy and unsteady.

I gasped as the air touched my face differently.

My jawline softened. My cheeks changed shape. My nose felt smaller, my lips fuller, my eyelashes suddenly heavier against my skin. There was no dramatic snap or flash — just a slow, unstoppable refinement, as if an unseen sculptor was brushing away every trace of the man I had been and replacing him with someone impossibly beautiful. My hair tingled at the scalp, then spilled downward in a thick platinum cascade before lifting again as if caught in a breeze. It lengthened, brightened, became silky and voluminous all at once, gathering itself into a high playful ponytail while soft strands framed my face.

I stumbled toward the mirror, breathing fast, and barely recognized the reflection staring back.

Her eyes were mine and not mine — blue-green, vivid and bright, lashes long enough to cast shadows on her cheeks. Her expression was stunned, confused, frightened... and beautiful. My body kept changing beneath the silk of the dress as the transformation rolled onward, making my waist tighten, my hips widen, my thighs round out with soft strength, my posture instinctively shift into something more elegant, more feminine, more bridal. The dress itself seemed to know what it was doing, flowing tighter at the waist and fuller at the skirt, its fabric settling around a body that no longer belonged to the man who had walked into this room.

Then came the mind.

That was the part that frightened me most.

At first it felt like fog pressing in behind my eyes, dimming one set of thoughts while another rose to meet them. Then memories flickered in my head that were not mine — laughter in a kitchen, slipping on heels for the first time, wedding plans, flower colors, old promises, the shape of a man’s hand I had never held and yet somehow knew. My thoughts tangled together, hers and mine, until I could not tell whether I was remembering the wedding or feeling it for the first time. The fear was still there, but now it shared space with excitement, with anticipation, with a strange aching certainty that this moment mattered more than I could understand.

I pressed a hand to my chest, then froze when I felt how completely real everything was.

My breathing turned shallow. My reflection looked back at me with parted lips and wide eyes, a bride on the edge of panic and awe. The veil was waiting nearby. The bouquet. The aisle. The music downstairs. The ceremony that could not be stopped now.

I swallowed hard and whispered the same question again, but softer this time, almost helplessly.

“Why me?”

And somewhere deep inside, beneath my fear and outrage and disbelief, a new feeling stirred — not quite acceptance, not yet, but something dangerously close to it.

Excitement.

Fear.

Anger.

And the terrible, thrilling certainty that the wedding was still coming, and I was going to walk into it changed forever.
