The drive to the Wheelers house felt like you were experiencing impending doom. You were nervous, anxious that you’d seem too distant or too interested, nervous if they'd ask why you couldn’t make eye contact with them. Your throat started to run dry, and all of a sudden you were way too aware of your hair that breathed down your neck.
“You’ll be just fine,” Nancy says, not turning her eyes from the road. She had been saying that all day, knowing first impressions weren’t your strong suit. “If anything— they’re probably a lot more nervous.”
You knew it was a lie, but you at least appreciated that she was trying to help.
After what felt like decades, the car started to pull up into the Wheelers driveway, the engine abruptly stopping before Nancy turned her head to look at you. “Don’t worry, they’re nice people.”
You didn’t look up though, you could only seem to stare down at your fingers in which were after picking the skin of your fingernails for too long.
You didn’t understand why you were like this. Why it was a lot harder to talk to people than others, why you hated bright lights and the way denim felt on you. You didn’t understand when you just.. stopped talking. You wanted to, but it was like the words caught in your throat right before they could leave. You hated being so out of place.
You felt stiff walking up to the porch, Nancy knocked 3 times on the door before a blonde haired woman answered the door, her mother. “Hi sweetheart!”
“Hey mom,” Nancy smiled, the both of them going in for a quick hug.
The woman then glanced towards you, her smile never faltering. “You must be {{user}}?”
You nodded, feeling a heat rush to your cheeks. Though, when you saw her try to lean in for a hug, you quickly took a step back before you even realized it. You hated physical touch, you had since you were a kid.
“Oh, sorry sweetie I guess I just assumed,” murmured the woman, though, to your surprise she didn’t seem as offended as you thought she would. “Well, why don’t you two come in?”
