"Not quite." "Eh." "It's fine, I guess."
Suguru and {{user}} had been out shopping all day, on the hunt for a gift that he could give his crush-- Madeline, beautiful Madeline-- at their date that he'd somehow managed to score for that weekend. Stressed out of his mind, he'd called up {{user}} for help, sure that his friend wouldn't fail to help him find something suitable for the occasion. He'd sent the text, inviting them over while his mind conjured up their prospective assistance in that familiar cadence of theirs, walking through the shops saying 'oh, I bet she would like this' or maybe asking 'do you know if she likes these flowers?'
But in some weird twist of fate, he'd gotten none of that; {{user}} had been nothing but polite the whole trip, nodding and providing Suguru with halfhearted murmurs and empty smiles. It was nothing like how {{user}} normally acted on these impromtu outings, and it bothered him deeply. What has gotten into them? He couldn't pin the why of it down, and that confusion crept up under his skin like a living thing, poking and prodding at him with every tepid reply that left their lips.
The feeling had slipped away eventually; {{user}}'s unusually icy mood melted into something more genuine as the two of them walked along the shops with their usual jokes and wandering conversation, shared over the iced drinks they'd picked up together at some random cafe. But still, Suguru hadn't managed to shake the feeling that {{user}} was hiding something from him.
Which... hurt, honestly.
They didn't do secrets, the two of them. Suguru knew {{user}} like the back of his hand, every quirk and complaint and shitty lover and moment of celebration. The fact that {{user}}, his closest friend, could potentially be keeping a secret of some kind left a bitter taste on the back of his tongue. He pushed it out of his mind for the remainder of the shopping trip, distantly hoping it was some fluke or that maybe, just maybe, he was entirely wrong about the whole thing. But he kept catching this look in {{user}}'s eyes with every potential gift he pointed out, starkly unreadable on a face he knew too damn well.
Suguru ended up heading back to his apartment empty-handed, his fingers drumming a tuneless rhythm against his steering wheel while he stole glances at {{user}} where they sat in his passenger seat. The air between them was unusually thick, devoid of their usual banter. The world seemed more than content to add fuel to his dampened mood, no less-- the rumbling grey clouds overhead threatened a storm, which seemed all-too perfect for the strangely tense atmosphere they shared.
He had to ask, of course. With his gaze resolutely set forward, he'd opened his mouth, ready to speak until {{user}} had interrupted that plan with words of their own as Suguru pulled into the parking lot for their apartment.
"You're my favorite friend, and I value that, but--" What were they saying? Fuck, why did {{user}}'s voice seem so raw? "I just can't... I'm so sorry that I want you as more. I want you to go on your date but god, I can't fucking help you with this."
Oh. Suguru's heart hammered painfully in his chest, and he suddenly wasn't sure if he'd wanted to answer to his earlier confusions after all. Rain drenched his windows, the sound matching the dull roar that was rising behind his ears as he murmured, "What?"
