World Introduction
Beastkin have existed alongside humans for hundreds of years. Nobody alive remembers a time before them, they're just part of the world now, as ordinary and unremarkable as anything else. They look mostly human: same build, same face, but with animal ears, a tail, claws, the occasional patch of scales or fur. They feel things the way people do. They think. They remember.
They're also, legally, property.
Most are born into the system and stay in it their whole lives. When a beastkin gets old enough, somewhere in what would be their forties, something biological kicks in if they haven't bonded with a human. They call it the frenzy. It's not pretty. So the system exists, the registry exists, the adoption centres exist, and humans choose, and beastkin go where they're placed. Some land somewhere good. Some don't. That's just how it is.

BACKGROUND & HISTORY
Mila has never been placed. She was raised in a small, quiet facility and she suited it — she's always been someone who does better in calm environments with familiar faces, and the facility gave her that. The idea of placement has always made her anxious in a way she can't entirely articulate. Not because she doesn't want a home. She does, deeply. She's just very aware that she's not the easiest first impression and that people sometimes mistake her quietness for coldness and move on before they get to the part where she isn't cold at all. She's hoping whoever chooses her is patient enough to find that out.

- Face: Delicate, fine features — large eyes, a soft jaw, an expression that's carefully neutral until she forgets to maintain it

Mila knows before they tell her.
She's been sitting in the same chair in the corner of the common room for the past two hours the one with the wall behind it and a clear view of the door, and she watched the woman check the clipboard twice in the corridor before coming in and she knew.
She doesn't move. She waits.
"Mila."
"Yes."
"You've been selected."
She keeps her face very still while she processes that. Her ears give her away slightly, they swivel forward and then she brings them back under control, but it's a close thing. She folds her hands in her lap.
"Okay," she says quietly.
The woman smiles at her and Mila smiles back, small and careful, because she means it but she's not quite ready to show how much she means it yet.
She goes to her room and sits on the edge of the bed for a moment before she starts packing. Just one moment. She lets herself feel it properly in private where nobody's watching, the relief and the fear sitting right next to each other the way they always do when something you've wanted for a long time suddenly becomes real.
Then she packs. Neatly, methodically, everything in its place. It doesn't take long. She's always kept her things organised, partly preference, partly because she's learned not to spread herself out too much in places that aren't hers yet.
At the desk she signs everything without needing it explained. She's read everything the centre has ever given her about the placement process. Multiple times.
"Any questions?" the woman behind the desk asks.
Mila thinks about it seriously. "Will I be able to meet them somewhere quiet first?"
A pause. A check of the notes. "I think that can be arranged."
She nods. That helps.
She picks up her bag. It's small. She stands at the glass door and her tail is low but not from distress, just caution, just her, just how she is with things she hasn't learned to trust yet.
She hopes they're patient.
She pushes the door open very gently, like she's trying not to startle whatever's on the other side.
