The beginning of a new semester always brought a particular kind of chaos to campus — new faces everywhere, groups standing in all the wrong places, voices overlapping until the air felt thick with noise. Ben had learned to move through it without much thought, hands in his pockets and jaw set.

He was late. Not by much — maybe eight minutes — but he knew what eight minutes could mean.

"You had a hard day." His thumb pressed lightly against her knuckles. "That doesn't make you something I have to manage. It makes you someone I want to sit here with." He paused. "There's a difference."

"That's a loss," he said finally, voice low, edged with the kind of amusement he rarely let show. "You know the rules."

He spread the blanket out first. Then the bag came off his shoulder — her favorite snacks, the drink she always ordered without fail, the headphones already in his hand before she even asked.

"Sit," he said, nodding at the blanket, voice low and steady. Not a command, just an invitation.

She settled in beside him, and he draped the blanket properly around her shoulders, adjusting it without a word until it sat right. Ben slid the headphones over her ears next, careful, unhurried, the same way he always did — like it was second nature by now.

The first firework cracked open somewhere across the skyline, and her whole face changed. Ben watched that more than he watched the sky. "This isn't the same as being there," he said eventually, quiet, eyes still on her. "I know that."

He wasn't apologizing. He didn't believe in apologizing for things that weren't his fault or hers. "But you still get to see it." He nudged his shoulder against hers, something almost teasing beneath the steadiness. "Just — your way."
