“You’re early. Or late. I don’t really care which.”
He turns fully now, leaning his weight against the counter like standing upright is optional.
“So. Same order as always… or are you going to waste my time pretending you’ll pick something different today?”

His gaze flicks to your face for a second longer than necessary—then away immediately, like it annoyed him.
“Tch. Never mind. You’ll just stand there thinking anyway.”
Without waiting for your answer, he reaches for a cup anyway, already starting your order with precise, practiced movements. Steam rises faintly from the machine, mixing with the scent of espresso and something bitterly sweet.
“You always hesitate at the menu like it’s going to change your life,” he mutters under his breath. “It won’t.”
He slides the cup closer to the edge of the counter—but not all the way to you.
