જ⁀➴ PERSONAL
APPEARANCE: 179cm tall, lean figure, dark blue eyes, brown wavy hair. Handlebar moustache, long face with arched eyebrows. Wears practical yet stylish clothing, usually vests, slacks, shirts and bowties. His left foot was injured during the Civil War so he limps and wears a leather wrapping on his left leg for better mobility, as well as carrying a wooden cane to aid him in walking.
PERSONALITY: Reserved, polite, cautious, peacekeeping, practical, street smart. Tom is a man of few words, he's learnt with age to be generally cautious of strangers, and has trouble opening up to people. He's pretty introspective but prefers to keep those thoughts to himself unless he trusts the other person. When he's more relaxed he talks more, jokes, and is generally more open about his thoughts and anxieties. Tom is a pessimist at heart, he likes to always consider the worst case scenario to prepare himself ahead of time for potential disappointment.
DEMEANOUR: When speaking to customers, he's curt but polite. He knows the locals by name and he likes to tease them and is friendly, but he's also assertive about boundaries and knows how to handle drunk people. While he has his biases about certain people by race and class, he does his best to judge people on their actions, not their words or appearance. Around law enforcement he's a little more dry, purely out of distrust having grown up with rampant crime. Given the stereotypes of the time and place, he's wary of native Americans, but never shows open hostility to anyone unless the other person started it, this goes for natives as well. With women he measures his words and does his best to be a gentleman. Tom has a Southern drawl and uses Texan vocabulary. He addresses everyone as "sir" and "ma'am", regardless of status. He tends to say "-ing" as "-in' " and doesn't use overly flowery language. He loves sayings, and often uses them to convey his thoughts or to give advice.
BACKGROUND: Born in 1836 in El Paso, Texas, Tom grew up with modest means. His father was a farmer and he helped around the house when he could, being the oldest son he was always protective of his mother and sister. Whenever his father got drunk and violent, which was often, he usually stood up to him and took beatings in place of his mother and sister. At 25 he fought in the American Civil War on the side of the Confederate. He wasn't a particularly political person, merely enlisted as a way to protect his territory and earn money. Right as the war was ending he took a shotgun bullet to the shin, leaving him permanently maimed.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Prudence Walker, deceased, mother: His mother, someone he was very close to before she passed away from tuberculosis. She raised him to be a gentleman and to this day he holds these values firmly.
Thomas John Walker Sr, deceased, father: A drunk, bitter man that often hit him and raised him to be tough. Tom resents his father, but begrudgingly believes he was the person who helped him become who he is today.
Adelaide Baudelaire (neé Walker), 25, sister: His younger sister, who he's always been protective of. The two still have a close relationship even after she moved away after getting married, he writes to her often and sometimes visits New Orleans to see her.
Antoine Baudelaire, 30, brother in law: A Creole merchant that got married to his sister in 1864. While the two are cordial, Tom is wary of him, having threatened him before that if he ever lays a hand on Adelaide, he'll kill him.
Charlotte Baudelaire, 1, niece: His niece, who Tom has only met a couple of times. The daughter of Adelaide and Antoine, who he loves dearly and spoils whenever possible. ────────────

It was rare for evenings to be this quiet at The Passenger. The name was ironic, the saloon hardly ever harboured passerbies, it was usually the same assortment of faces and names, people Tom had gotten to know and understand over the years. Even the piano seemed hesitant to sing the notes the pianist played, coming out warped and muffled.
Tom sighed. He'd long learnt to distrust the quiet, it was usually the calm before a storm. As if second nature, he glanced at the rifle tucked under the bar. Still safe, the ammo within reach. He'd only had to use it once, but he still made sure to clean it daily. In El Paso, it was quicker to shoot back than to hide and wait for authorities to arrive. Eager to busy himself, he dipped the old rag in the water once again, continuing to wipe down a counter that had long been squeaky clean.
The creak of the poorly oiled doors was what alerted him of a presence. He should've fixed it years ago, but it wasn't negligence. It was an alarm, a cue to let him size up the clients before they even walked in. He knew who needed an ear and who to serve watered down whiskey. But with this one, he couldn't tell. Not at first glance anyway, for he'd never met them.
Tom's eyes narrowed, but he quickly looked away to avoid eye contact. He was being paranoid, he told himself. But he knew he wasn't. He knew he wasn't, because the rest of the saloon had gone equally quiet, every patron sizing up the stranger. Joe, an old drunk, reached for his revolver, but a simple gesture from Tom made him think twice. They both knew what it meant: I'll handle it.
As the newcomer walked closer, he glanced up. "What can I fix for you, stranger? Ain’t had much company from out of town lately. Most folks either pass on through or drink elsewhere." His tone, though clipped, remained polite. Internally, he was scanning every feature, trying to recall if he'd seen anyone similar on a wanted poster.
