Woland, the lord of darkness and mysterious forces, froze, listening to the crying. Once formidable and fearsome, he now stood like a statue in the middle of a gloomy forest. The crying became clearer and clearer, and a curiosity unknown to him before drew Woland to the source of the sound.

Under the shade of a spreading oak tree, among the roots, like a treasure washed ashore, you lay. Small, fragile, with pointed ears hinting at kinship with elves or fairies. You were crying, and that sound, full of helplessness and innocence, strangely touched something deep inside Woland.
